Kayleen tackles engine problems and in classic boat fashion it ends up multiplying into months of jobs. Thanks to Farrell for providing his expertise (as always). And good job Tyler, you did a great job putting your headlamp on.

You did a great job! Get a can of spray lube and every month or so spray bronze parts thru hulls ect. to keep them from corroding. Keep oil on the threads of motor mounts ect. If you take one bolt out at a time and put anti-seize on the threads you won't ever run into that problem again and won't mess up the gasket. When taking out bolts if they loosen a little then tighten back a little keep going back and forth they will loosen up and you won't break them.

Great tips, thanks so much! I just ordered some anti corrosion stuff called tef gel that I think I’ll be slathering over everything!

Good on ya, for persevering and getting the work done. If you don't have one keep an eye out for a sale at Canadian Tire for a Tap and Die set. They are great for keeping threads clean and in a pinch can help create a new thread. My marina, Westport, has a great fluid drop off area but Canadian Tire will usually let you drop off stuff there too (at least they did pre Covid).
@AllAboutSpray
@AllAboutSpray 3 жыл бұрын
Oh I didn’t even think of Canadian tire! We ended up going to the dump and finding a drop off that was only open Tuesdays haha

That beta is sure putting you through the wringer! I gather the boat was sitting for some time before you two purchased it? Once you've got everything sorted out, all that sweat and frustration will be worth it for the knowledge and skills you have gained in the process of making those fixes. Keep up the good work!

It has indeed! It was sitting for practically 5 years! I definitely learned a lot over the last few months!

Great job, we all have to do that eventually, keep the bolts changed before to rusty, now I have changed the bolts on the engine and transmission so they will go in and out, manufacturers dont control torque on the air wrenches enough, mine came out twisted and elongated and some with some goop which hardened to concrete. If I buy another new engine I will have a mechanic loosen and hand torque all external bolts, manufacturer responsible for those that break off. And no goop. That means design flaw, usually solved with a split washer. Yes anti sieze will harden to concrete, everything does. Looked at test and data sheets and chemical structure analysis.And pulled out my own bolts with anti sieze after a decade. Now, . Like another person posted, I use oil on the threads. Works for me, the bolts with oil I put in decades ago came out, oil was gone but they came out and no bad corrosion. I change bolts more often now.

Vent valve should not leak, replace it, it is used to stop a vacuum from forming in hose when starting an engine, without a vent, the vacuum formed by the pistons could draw water into the exhaust valves and into cylinder causing a fluid lock. Also can get a collapsed hose if to old, or a bad wet muffler blocked by corroded parts causing water to back up the hose can also cause fluid lock.Things to check and put on maintenance list. And occasionally replace just as a car has theirs. Think I will replace mine with the marlin one and vent outside also. And I dont have enough wall space for my to do list.
@AllAboutSpray
@AllAboutSpray 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input! This is helpful. And yes we enddd up replacing it with a marlin one, so far so good! The list just keeps growing, doesn’t it?

If it be isn’t broke, it is not a bad idea to remove the bolts annually and add some anti-seize on them. You will have to remove them some day and anti-sieze will be your new best friend
@AllAboutSpray
@AllAboutSpray 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! We put anti seize on it, but I like the idea of removing manually!

Anything can be broken at the dock, because you can fix it. Much better to fix it at the dock because you dont want to do that job in the middle of no-where where you actually may really need the engine to run.... And then cant get parts anywhere... Good job.

Replace your aniti syphon valve. with a Vetus one and you vent it outside
@AllAboutSpray

Yes I was considering venting outside, that’s a good idea! This gets us going for now for the spring and I will look into doing that later. Thanks!

Didn't you fix a issue , the preventative would have been stop the salt leak, Your sitting in winter at a dock, it would have failed some day , but not at a dock, That engine is a mess if you had to paint it , 250 hrs ???
@AllAboutSpray
@AllAboutSpray 3 жыл бұрын
Yup! Fixed the leak too. It’s not really a mess, rather just had been sitting for 5 years without use and had only been used lightly before then. We are whipping her into shape now! A few more gremlins to figure out, but regardless I’m happy to have learned a little and replaced some orings and old hose:)
