It would be really cool to see more tactics explained in the rink diagram by you guys. Cheers.

The timing of this video is perfect. “The hard work is being patient in your quad” 🎉 Trying to get kids to understand positional patience is more effective than they realize.

Great video guys. Only half way through but I had feedback. You might want to use a penny or small magnet so that you can fluently move it around without messing up your drawings. so if a puck starts in the corner and transitions up the wall, you can move the penny and all of the drawings aren't affected.

I can answer why. In our area they don’t allow the time to teach that on the ice because we get accused of instilling a system and that will get you called into the office for a conversation.

30-33min, transition area part, to me thats when the center would go behind the net if the D lost the corner battle.

Can you guys create an online course on situational awareness/decision making in hockey? I'd gladly pay quite a bit of money for it.

Respectfully I am gonna have to disagree with Andy about high tempo, high pace practices. At the end of the day, you play how you practice. Is it important to teach the basic skills… 100%. It is important to teach good habits, playing the boards, play without the puck, stopping in front of the net, getting puck off quickly, etc… 1000%. We have to remember that develop an athelete is a marathon, not a sprint and stopping every drill and teaching, teaching, teaching is not effective. #1 because kids will start to HATE practices, #2 you learn WAY more executing than listen to coach jammer on and on, #3 ice is way too expensive to have kids standing around not moving. Its a delicate balance between under-coaching & over-coaching. The biggest problem we have in Canada is we do not take a long term approach to development. Parents, coaches and associations have lost their way and care more about winning today than the long term development of the athlete. See it ALL the time, new coach, new system. Then the kids play for another coach the next year and they try to instill their systems, all the while the athletes’ development is being sacrificed in the name of wins and systems. Although it may work short term, years and years of doing this is detrimental to the development of the hockey player. Andy mentions not to worry about the skating, that everyone gets there… I completely disagree. IMHO, the difference between AHL and NHL is speed of the game, the difference between AA & AAA is speed of the game. Thinking skating will just magically happen is a recipe for an under-developed hockey player. Passing is another serious problem. In practice 90% of drills should have passing and kids at young ages need to work on these skills over and over again so by the time they get to Bantam when more complex systems should start to be taught, they have a VERY solid foundation.

Lots of scattered point here, but in general you are not accurately summarizing the position of either host with respect to development, practice plans, or skill building more broadly. This episode is meant to lay out how to teach basic structure in the defensive zone, and well thought out methods for doing so. All of their comments and points are in that context - if your goal as a coach/player is to teach/learn basic of dzone.
