There really is an interesting "paradox" between the mind's craving for meaning and the actual experience of meaning which is more of a feeling. Meaning really is constructed. If you grew up indoctrinated by your parents that praying to a certain mental image/god is meaningful it will be so for you (unless doubt sets in). Meditation and mindfulness give you the tools to set and experience meaning for yourself to a certain extent. That makes them incredibly powerful. Like mentioned in the podcast that is usually achieved through values which have to be translated into concrete actions and goals. So it really is possible to acknowledge for yourself "I value friendship" and then shift your mental workings accordingly and act upon it. And then to experience friends as a meaningful part of your life. Shifting your mental workings is done by framing the value in a positive way and cutting through doubt and negativity via mindfulness. Now the interesting thing is that the "mind question" regarding meaning runs parallel through it. It is possible to doubt the possibility for "true" meaning and yet still have pockets of meaningful experience in your life. There certainly is a very heavy correlation, though, and if you cultivate nihilism in your rationality and thinking it will poison your ability to "feel" meaning. So what do we say to the mind that asks: "What is the true meaning if everything is made up? What is the point if there is no permanence?" etc.? I don't know. I don't think it can't be solved on this level. On a meta-level you might question the point and validity of that question for instance on a language-philosophical level. Just because I can construct sentences, doesn't make them meaningful. Like I can ask "What was before the big bang?". But that certainly isn't very satisfying and not really convincing to the inquisitive mind. It doesn't "feel" right. We still crave. But cravings can be for the "wrong things" as well. Like when a smoker craves a cigarette, the craving is real to him and nothing else can quite scratch the itch. There is no easy solution, except to rationally see through it and then cut through the habit in spit of the addiction.

As I am not a native English speaker, I would be really grateful if you could elaborate in simpler words on the meaning of mindfulness Sam Harris contributed to this podcast. From what I understood it seems to be about detaching your perception of emotions occurring in the moment itself, but unfortunately I wasn't able to follow completely through his thoughts. I also want to take the chance in my first comment to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the good advice and thought provoking content you produce in such a graceful and simple way! Best Wishes from Germany

As much as I respect Sam Harris, the leap in logic comparing a movie ending with your entire existence ending is astounding. When a movie ends you can reflect on it, replay scenes from it, watch something else, watch it again, eat an apple and *continue living*! When life is over you do not reflect, you do not think, you do not laugh, you do not pay a price for your deeds, nor claim a reward. All the people left on Earth who know you, or know of you can reflect on your life, but then they die, and the people who know them die, and so on until all is gone. Quite different things.

This is kind of a hard episode to listen to. I get where they are coming from but my moments of mindful can or happiness are very rare. I don't feel much unless I have thoughts about something. It might be why maybe more Zen meditation or nothingness medication is more relatable for depressed people who tend to sleep a lot. Absence of thought and feeling nothing sometimes it's a better experience than trying to force happiness with affirmations that you cannot help but react against, knowing they aren't true from past experience.

Advertising gives value to the consumer just based on their interest. The content producer takes your interest in their product and turns that into funding for the production, everyone wins. This new movement of no advertising, but member only content is a bummer. I don't mind paying, but I listen to 100's of different lectures and podcasts including content I don't agree with. Rather than input my credit card info each time. Id rather the content producers choose which companies they allow to support them, confirm that those companies have no control over the content, then everyone wins.

your videos are really good, but I hope you and all the great western country people who make such videos remember that Minimalism's root lies in hindu culture.......we have something called as 'aparigraha' meaning keeping the desire for possessions to what is necessary or important, depending on one's life stage and context. The precept of aparigraha is a self-restraint (temperance) from the type of greed and avarice where one's own material gain or happiness comes by hurting, killing or destroying other human beings, life forms or nature I love that western countries are realizing that important of aparigraha, yoga, dhyan dharna (meditation), pranayam (breathing exercise) and avadhan (mindful), only wish that every one is aware that the core values come from hinduism and thereby dont hate hindus and hinduism................. do follow it by all means, as its free knowledge meant for everyone's benefits.........but do give due credit and love where its due...........to India, Indians and Hinduism...........
@dijaouija
@dijaouija 4 жыл бұрын
Other cultures (especially Asian ones, IMO) seem to accept minimalism much better than Western countries. Our culture seems to revolve around the hording of resources and possessions. I'm hoping for the sake of our nation (and the health of the world) that we can reconstruct our beliefs, because our greed is very harmful.
@dijaouija
@dijaouija 4 жыл бұрын
Also, a lot of western people have a hard time giving credit where credit is due, and like to take others' cultures and present it as if it was their idea. In their mind culture is for "everyone" and doesn't need to be credited, since it's shared. People who ask or demand credit are seen as "snowflakes" or "SJWs". I think culture can intersect, but things like yoga need to be credited to the people who developed it, and respected as such. Same with indigenous garb and rituals.
@MrCmon113

@@dijaouija Who exactly is saying that Yoga doesn't come from India? As for "minimalism", there were hermits in very many cultures for a long, long time. It's not unique to India.

@19:50 Sam says that when we are fully present, we don’t even consider the ‘meaning’ of our lives... my experience has been the complete opposite. Whenever I am fully present, I’m never more sure that there is a greater purpose to all of this and I’m here for a reason. I’ve been observing Sam for a long time, and for someone who is an “expert” in mindfulness, he sure let’s his emotions get the better of him fairly often... see his spats with Glenn Greenwald and Ezra Klein for example, or his terminal case of Trump Derangement Syndrome lol. Sam has an enormous ego that revels in the thought of being seen as some great intellectual and secular guru. I’ll give him some credit, as he is probably the most self-aware lefty liberal in the public sphere, but that’s like being the skinniest kid a fat camp 😂

Sam’s opinion on nihilism is completely wrong. I love Sam but he’s completely wrong regarding the logic of nihilism and the question “what’s the point of it all?”. Following that question to its logical conclusion will make you depressed, it’s made me depressed, but the logic is what it is regardless of how I feel about it. Sam calls it a “mind disorder” to think this way, I would argue that the real mind disorder is tricking yourself into not accepting the obvious fact that there is no point to it all.
