"How many drums do you need?!?"
"Just one more..."
We've heard (and said it) plenty of times before. It's nice to have variety and there are a lot of different sounds to be achieved. It's also fun to collect some beautiful instruments but it's important to know what each drum is really capable of and be able to get the most out of each one. You never know when you'll only be able to bring one with you for a variety of needs.
Using the most recorded snare drum model of all time, the Ludwig Supraphonic, we demonstrate three vastly different tunings without changing the heads or wires or using additional products.
In this video, we'll start out with the medium tuning from Ep. 1 (go back and watch this now for the overall tuning methods employed throughout our videos for how to tune a snare drum: • Ep. 1 How to Get A Gre...

The reason why I love it is because it kind of has a generic “boring” sound which blends well in a lot of song mixes. It’s like a standard white wall paper in the background that makes the room look good

Hi, wonderful content guys. Very impressed by the range of topics - thank you. Made me chuckle to think of the first kit I ever had with batter heads either side of the toms, but they sounded great to me. Likewise, the video that you put up about the DW pitch stamping philosophy and how lugs/suspension and paraphenalia affect the resultant pitch. People like you asking the questions we've all had - but didn't have time to discover - and then testing them, that's what there should be more of in music. Most versatile snares? a 5" Ludwig 400 and my Premier 6.5" birch. That's my 'collection'.

Hey thanks guys for the awesome videos. This channel truly is a great resource for the youtube drum community! It would be interesting to see the difference between some of the top drum head companies (Remo, Evans, Aquarian) and how they stack to one another. I have a friend who is a an Aquarian endorser and swears that those heads are naturally more resonant than their competitors.

Curious, Jeff, how do you set up your Dyna-sonic for a high sound? I have an early 70's Dyna-sonic, can't seem to find that higher tuning?!?!? When I try to tune it up, it gets "boxy." It has an OK sound in the middle to higher dynamics, but it doesn't have anything in the very quiet range?!?!?

Great video. Not sure I agree with your version of bottom head tuning, but everyone is different. I like the immediate snare response of a very tight snare head, and I can feel when it's not right, as the snare response feels sloppy to me. As a result, I use the Remo No-Collar Ambassador snare side. My go-to "bury it with me" drum is my Pearl Brass Sensitone BB5514 (5.5 x 14). Nothing wrong with the Supra, as I have one of those too, but the Pearl gets the most stand-time.

What you're thinking of that kinda muffling trick going around? It's about tuning the two lugs right in front of you a few turns down, to get it real crispy. I experinced it on certain snares and it worked fine, but I've never been sure if it would damage the hoop or the head. So I didn't try it on my drums.
@SoundsLikeADrum

Hey there! Yeah I don’t do that on snares personally because of the high tension, I don’t wanna damage the hoop or the head either. I do this occasionally (yesterday at a session in fact) to the reso on floor toms if the bass drum is activating it too much and nothing else is working :) - Cody

I mentioned before that my favorite snare drum out of my three is a Noble and Cooley. Although my 1991 Black Galaxy finish 6.5x14 Ludwig Acrolite is almost a tie for first.The third is odd, but super unique. And hard to find. It's a Sonor 1.5x12 pancake snare. I have no idea how long that series ran or how many were made. But it has a very distinct and sensitive sound. The easiest way to describe it is for ska or maybe 80s rap. The best part is I found it here in San Diego at our swap meet for $25 in the plastic bag almost brand new. Once again your tutorial on snares and tuning snare drums was spot on.
@SoundsLikeADrum

Oh man! That Sonor sounds amazing :) I have a lat 80’s Noble and Cooley that I love to death, 7x14” solid and I bought it from the drummer for the guy who did the “YAHOO” in the old yahoo.com tv commercials! Special sound for sure and the drum that started my obsession with tuning and tone.

Hi! Just found your channel last week and am really enjoying the content! When I was in the business of buying a Supraphonic a few years ago, I was given the advice that I could always make a deeper drum sound shallower but that making shallow drum sound deeper was a lot more difficult, especially since doing so sacrifices sensitivity. I thought that was good advice so I opted for the 402 instead of the 400 and it's been great. However, I don't feel like I get the same, not sure how to describe it, quick articulate sound of a 400, perhaps for obvious reasons. But anyways, when attempting to recreate the 400 even with such a close drum as the 402 I feel it falls short as I can only make it sound higher (in pitch) and not necessarily shallower... Is this something you have given any thought and perhaps you have some input? Thank you, Adam

Hi guys I'm new subcriber in your channel because I think is one of the best an one of the few dedicated not to chops and technique but to sound of the drums and that is the plus of your channel, my question is: is there any equivalences table between the scale of the drum dial and the regular frequencies (Hz)? I make this question because I found a very interesting tunning in a video but they used the dial and they said "tunning is 88 in drum dial" but here in my country we don't have those devies and I wanted to find out which frequency (note or tone) is that but I couldn't because there's no way to find a comparison table or scale, I hope I'm not bottering you with my question I'm new but I'm taking time to watch all your videos because I like a lot your channel, nothing more for now I hope you can answer me and if is not to much I promise I will keep asking you new questions in the future, Cheers!

@SoundsLikeADrum 5 жыл бұрын
Hey there! No problem at all, we welcome all questions :) Regarding drum dial measurements, I honestly don't know exactly how their measurement system works because i've never used one before. I still just use my ear to find the sound i'm after, even if i'm trying to copy a sound i've heard somewhere. It's possible that we'll be addressing tuning devices like that in the future. Good luck! - Cody

Hey, Cody - when it comes to relative pitch, do you prefer to have the resonant head lower than the batter?
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 5 жыл бұрын
I don’t really get into the relative pitch of the two heads when it comes to snare drums, it’s really all about the sound I’m after on a given day. If I were to broadly generalize though, I’d say I usually have the snare side on the tighter side unless I’m going after a certain kind of specialized sound where I need it to be lower. - Cody

I would have loved to hear each of the heads after you tuned them. I often find the snare bottom head tension hard to dial in for low tunings. Great presentation though.
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Rather than prescribe specific tensions or demonstrate pitches to aim for, we wanted to provide a more general approach that should be the springboard for your experimentation since these specifics are the variables that change from drum to drum and based on preference. In order to make this applicable for everyone, we wanted to stay a bit more high-level. We'll do some in-depth tuning demos dedicated to specific sounds on specific drums in the future. Thanks for watching and providing feedback!

Hey guys! Love this so much. Thank you! Question: I want to find my "the one" snare, that'll give me anything I need and whatnot. I tend towards wood snare drums because I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and humidity is a huge issue. So, I hate seeing metal drums get rust spots and the like. I also really like the sound of wood. I own a Ludwig Classic Maple 14 x 5 (tube lugs, die-cast hoops). What wood model / size would you recommend as a REALLY versatile wood option? Or do I already have something amazing in my hands I need to explore and appreciate more? Thanks again!

@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Andrew! What you've got there is a great drum. Maple is an excellent, middle ground option for a wood snare and 14x5" size is pretty common, though some people are opting for slightly deeper drums these days Before you decide to invest in a different drum, we'd strongly recommend experimenting with what you've got. Make sure your heads and wires are in good condition and start experimenting with sounds based on episodes 1 and 2 of our series. Get to know what it's capable of. Make note of what qualities you like about the sounds you're getting as well as what you feel is lacking. If you can, get someone else to play the drum a bit too so you can hear it from a distance. Cheers!
@codogma
@codogma 6 жыл бұрын
Yep, as stated above you've got a great drum there and with some experimentation you should be able to get a wide variety of great sounds out of it. I'd also add that since you already have stiffer (and more expensive) die-cast hoops, it is an inexpensive and fun option to get yourself some standard triple-flange hoops as well and experiment with how they change the sound. I find the difference to be pretty dramatic and worth exploring. Die-cast on batter side and triple-flange on snare-side is also a fun option.
@andrewmcalister
@andrewmcalister 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! As said mentioned above, I was actually wanting a bit more body, maybe a 6,5. I have a Remo PS3 on it, maybe try a CS Dot or a Fyberskyn or something for that extra body. I saw the calfskin video as well. Maybe a 56'Calftone. What say ye? As for rims, been wanting too try out Pearl Fat Tone hoops. I tried a Gretsch 302 off a Brooklyn snare, but they didn't fit. Being tube lugs, the screw holes have to be an exact match, very straight. And the wholes in the 302s didn't allow me to line up the lug with he screws. Or maybe just go really weird and try single flanged... just for fun. Anyways, thanks again!
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 6 жыл бұрын
Right on, yeah hoops lining up properly is a huge deal - sometimes I've even had inner/outer pressure from the lug screws on the hoop result in interference with resonance on drums with thinner shells. If you're rocking a PS3 batter, I'd first experiment a lot with the pitch relationship between the top and bottom heads and also really pay attention to how the wires are tensioned before worrying about trying a lot of heads. Don't be afraid to experiment and really loosen both top and bottom. That said, if body is what you're after, you wanna go for a thicker 2-ply or center-dot batter head and do a bit of strategic muffling. As you move tape/moongel/whatever from the edge of the head toward the center, the effect becomes more dramatic and can really bring out the lows and allow you to get away with a much looser tuning that you might've thought possible before. Hope that helps!

I want to clarify that I am not at all hating on big fat snare drum as a brand. In fact, I have plans on buying one because they do have their place. But I've always thought that it was ironic that the name big fat snare drum really did not match with the completely dry and choked tone that you get out of that product.
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting! In my experience with using cut-out heads in the past for this sort of sound, and now with some of the new products available, I really found that the tuning of the drum before placing a fattening layer on top was a huge deciding factor in whether it did indeed fatten the sound or squash it. Right now I'm digging the cut-out head (or similar item) on higher-tuned snares, more drastic difference than with a mid-range tuned drum and less chance of losing that thumpy tone :) Cheers!
