I get it, this is satire on over complicating the 1 minute it actually takes to tune a snare, just cranky the bottom, simple

Does somebody know if there is a channel like sound like a drum but about guitars? Like guitar strings, pickups, tunings, amps, pedales, etc.

@Ricardo_Carillo there are a million guitar channels on KZfaq. Just type in the topics you want to check out and it will bring up lots of channels specific to what you're looking for. After awhile you'll find channels that cover everything, or you can subscribe to individual channels for each topic. Just remember to look at how many subscribers each channel has and how long they've been around. Sadly, some people don't know what they're talking about.

I used to own a Zildjian 21” A Sweet Ride, which I noticed has an umbrella-like shape to it. It wasn’t to my liking because of its brittle kind of wash. A standard 20” K ride fits me way better - it still has ping and a nice bell, but a nicer darker wash imo. I bet the shape plays a big part listening to your examples. Cheers!

It seems counterintuitive that this should be true, but the single head sound seems very warm and round. I like it. Some folks say it’s louder without a reso head, which really seems counterintuitive. Can anyone confirm whether that’s really true?

Those heads are so dead and dull that the differences between the different adjustments are kind of minimal. I’ve wasted a bunch of money experimenting with most of the Evans EQ series heads, only to determine that they all sound dull and lifeless. If going for the openness and fullness of an unported head, I’d avoid a head with any “self-muffling” stuff and keep nothing inside the drum. You can always apply temporary and adjustable muffling from the outside of your situation requires it. But if you’re going for a punchy sound like the one in all the rest examples here, you may as well just port the head and not have to worry about an engineer who doesn’t know what to do with it. (My fave head setup: clear or smooth single ply heads on both sides, with a felt strip under each head. Works for everything.)

Hi! I’m having some issues with my hi hats, it’s been like 2 weeks since the sound of the cymbal kinda feels off, it’s goes good but at a certain point it starts to sound like scratchy, I’ve tried 3 different hi hats and two different hh stand. Any tips or help would be amazing. Thank you so much!

excellent video describing and showing easy fixes and common problems/mistakes, every time i watch a video of yours i learn something or am reminded of a time this same thing happened to me or a fellow drummer buddy on tour or at the practice space/drum cave, how about a video on the FEEL of a drum in trouble, or damaged-and what that should or maybe shouldn't feel like as how it also is sounding? That problem has come up before and took some considerable tinkering and head scratching to solve if memory serves me,just a thought, thank you.

I once got a 14" crash, which was very old and sounded so dark, it had pretty much no treble and sustain (it was pretty flat). It had multiple cracks along the bell, which the previous owner tried to solder (!). The thing being so thick, I thought I could enhance the sound and get it to open up a little by machine sanding it and drilling a large amount of holes into it, removing probably around a quarter of its overall mass in the process. Sadly it didn't work out and I ended up tossing it into the bin, but it was a fun process!

Stick choice is a big deal but also the dynamic of the place you play in makes a big difference. And every drummer makes a different sound it looks like sometimes the sound comes out of you ! ;-) Thanks for making good content!

I stumbled upon the Zildjian K Special Dry cymbals. By itself, sounds weird. Never heard anything like it. Did not know if I would like it. My initial thoughts were, NOPE! But I do know that in a mix with a band things tend to change. Ended up purchasing a 20” Soecial Dry & a 19” Special Dry Trash Crash. Once I heard the playback with the band at church I immediately fell in love. SO GOOD! And you wanna talk about profiles?... these cymbals have many. But yes, at the end of the day the way it washes out so quickly of the mix is genius. Fits the needs we as a band were looking for. And they sound great! Thank you for going through all the different profiles.

I'm thankful you guys are getting into cymbal anatomy. I think it's an underrepresented subject. Hey so you use that old Sabian for jazz, it'd be great for the stoner/doom metal I play too. I'd also want a ride that I can keep crashing and it still have defined crashes on the 8th notes. I don't think there is such a thing as the right cymbal for a certain type of music it all depends on the player. Also great find with that blank cymbal, a lot of them sound a bit iffy but this one sounds extremely useful.

Quick crash of doom story... One of the top drummers in Pittsburgh played one in a show I saw years ago and it sounded absolutely amazing. Of course I had to have one. I bought the 22" version because I tend to lean towards larger cymbals. It was terrible. I tried for a while to get used to it, but no dice, it was crap. Eventually, I decided to alter it. Big... Vents... Like 6 big 2" vents. It may have sounded 1% better... Sold it. Replaced it with a 22" Benny Greb sand crash and haven't looked back. (Had to take the rivots out tho)

Right now, my preference is for rides with a lower profile, but on the drier side to take away some of that sustain. I kinda like it when a cymbal takes its time to fully open up, like if you do a roll on it, you really get a sense of the overtones coming in one by one as you crescendo. Chinas are the exception, because I want them to be extremely fast and explosive, with little sustain. One thing to watch out for, however, is how much different a cymbal sounds from the audience vs. from the throne. A ride that maybe has a little more sustain than I want it to, when I hear it from the throne, sounds perfect or even just a tad short when I hear it from 15 feet away.

I actually liked how it sounded even before you did anything to it lol it's not for every style obviously but that sound has it's place especially if the overtones ringing is controlled (which tbh just hearing this recording & not being in person, they didn't really sound that obnoxious)

I struggle to find crashes that have the long sustain that I want and is as low as I can get. Resorting to 19"crashes solely at the moment. I have Z3, but my one (Thrash Ride) needs replacing as, for some reason, it has lost all of it's sound. Don't know why. As for the profile, I never really thought about it. I once had a set of K Dark Crashes, they sounded beautiful but they were really short in the sustain so I sold them.

Loving this new series. I’m sure this is coming up-B20 vs B8 vs other alloys? BTW, from the internet: “Dennis Chambers discovered a crash he enjoyed on a ca. 2000 performance tour to China one with a dark, special sound. Dennis admired it so much that he asked Zildjian to re-create it for him. Completely based on a Dennis Chambers cymbal.”

Drums is in the service business (Todd Sucherman). Deliver what the customer, conductor, producer, band members, audience, etc. want. So having options and even make them towards customers requirements is very nice.I like your channel and watch many videos : TOP *****. Pearl Master Custom also top ***** I often change drums, cymbals, add ons, muffling, sticks, how and where and how hard i hit, how is my balance between other instruments in the band/orchestra, how is my relative balance on the kit (snare vs bass drum vs hi hart vs toms etc.), how loud are accents, what is p or f in a church and what is p or f in a rock or big band, how to hit the cymbals, how loose or tight is my grip, what is my stick height, hit vertical or with a sweep , single stroke or multiple stroke, how is my timing, what groove, how many fills, how long fills, how many variations, click or no click, what is tempo, change the song style, play same song with brushes, sticks, percussion, mallets, rods, etc. What jam block red=low/blue=mid/yellow=high, what size/kind cowbell, .... What is placement in room or outside. Use screens for damping or behind the kit for amplification outside. What heads to choose. So i dont often change tuning. Yes i do hear a lot of difference between high latin/jazz tunings and very low blues tunings. Yes i did experiment with all kind of tunings, intervals, tone of shell, etc. Yes it does major influence the sound! However i often have to play all those styles in 1 evening so ...more easy to drum on another drum or drum on another way on the same drum than to change tuning between all songs. Have 20 years in row 4 to 6 reheardsals a week and 55 to 70 gigs a year. Every day or every song change tuning ...will cost a lot of time and will cost a lot of drum heads. I did choose Pearl and that sound is kind of all round (yes there will be better drums but ...Pearl is 100% OK for me ...don't need 200% or more) The drums and hardware never have problems so I do not have to think about my drums and hardware. Did choose 1 recommended tuning and never did someone complain about that. So i can just focus on every rehearsal or gig, the music, the situation, the repertoire, the event, the audience, do i still have all of my drum gear, etc. A top tuning at home that takes 1 or even more days to achieve may sound bad after transport and temperature / humidity changes or after a heavy drum session or someone else playing my drums. However if I once or 2 times a year take a lot of time to get a perfect tuningof top and bottom head than in most cases i just have to tune the top head to get it to my preferred tuning. Tuning up or down to adjust to 4, 5, 6, ... piece setups is simple with 2 drum keys just befor the show/rehearsal starts. Tuning up or down a bottom head also is easy. Have a very bad tuned drum towards its ideal sitiuation may sometimes take a lot of time. But adjusting/optimising it is very easy and fast. Can tune befor every rehearsals/gig. Sometimes also in between sets. Had severe proiblems in a church when the moved my drum kit to a place with vbery noisy acoustics. Already 1 year active optimising the sounhd of the drums and my drumming. Having options did give me the possibility to already first rehearsal and gig have an accepted sound. Still findingwhere is the optimum. In most case it is easy so preferrred tuning, standard setup, choose right stick./brushes etc. and go. I mostly in pause ...after a set ask in the auence , at band members at conductor , etc. ...how is my souynd an balance and i adjust. Mostly it is OK because of my experience. Some times (110 musicians in a church) i have to adjust and ...did it fast and OK. Did not get complains (but also did not get compliments) but ...was asked again! Having a bachelor degreee in engineering and working with lost of electronics and instrumentation I use Tunebot. Simon Phillips says: one evening the click feels to slow, other days it els to fast ...people change ...electronics do not change. I think it also is with tuning: one day i will sound hard and high and other day it will sound deep and muffled. Electronics always deliver same answers. Play wiyth or without click? Tune wit or without electronics? Am happy about my toms and bass drum tuning but not about my snare drum tuning. G for top head is Ok do it 40 years in all kind of styles/band/orchestras and it works. HAd my snare tuned by shops and G for top was always OK. But bottom head tuning is difficult. Top and bottom same is not the sound most people expect from a snare ...yes it works ...no complains but it is not crispy ...a bit boomy a lot of resonance. Tunebot has no solutions for it. I never learned to use the lug frequencies. I use fundamentals and every lugs same (diff function same values on each lug)
