Volkswagen is no longer normal or perfectly fine. If the prices reflected the cost cutting and shit quality carpets and depressing interiors then sure, but a Golf GTi with options can get well over £40,000 in the UK, which is utter insanity. And the Mk8 is literally worse than the Mk7. Cheaper interior, worse infotainment, and for what? An extra 10bhp or so? Their whole design process with the Mk8 was literally to take the Mk7 and save production costs while changing enough to make the less enthusiastic car buyer believe it's a new car. Volkswagen for a long time now has genuinely believed that its consumers are completely stupid.

@@debbienye6002 I specialize on VW. The DSG is bulletproof (basically a manual transmission in the mechanical sense). The only weak link is the clutch pack and the mechatronics. The clutch pack is not really a weak link more a serviceable item. It's a wet clutch similar to a motorcycle. Life expectancy of about 130-150k miles. The mechatronics is the valve body/computer that control everything. This is probably the one weak link, and an expensive one. Not a fan of having the computer/electronics as an all-in-one assembly, but that's all modern cars these days it seems.

and diesel gate all boiled down to the fact v. w. didn't want to put a large enough D E F additive tank for the diesels , it would take more room than they wanted, so they made it use less d.e.f. with the smaller tank for show and kick in the full amount when testing

@olivera.7722

To be fair it was not only VW, nearly every carmaker was in on it. The other brands just used other methods to determine when which amount of additive is used. Nearly no diesel car met the criteria on the road or were cleaner than VW. VW was the only one doing it illegally. Others had for example a very narrow temperature range in which the criteria were met. Officially to not damage the engine, but with the same result as VW. Coincidently it was the temperature range which occurs during testing...

The majority of the dieselgate diesels didn't have DEF, or the SCR system that goes with it, they had NOx traps. The whole scandal was exposed when researchers were trying to figure out how VW was able to make their cars meet emissions standards using a NOx trap instead of an SCR system, because it wasn't something that anyone else had been able to achieve. It turned out that VW hadn't been able to make NOx traps work either, they had simply cheated instead.

Hey Ed, couple of quick questions, can you do an episode on German reliability compared to the Japanese, Korean, and American cars? The reason I’m asking is that it seems here in the USA I see more German cars in mechanics shops than that of their competitors. However, I’m not saying that is always the case, outliners exist like most GM products or Subaru products. But parts for Euro Cars are more expensive than that of the USDM, JDM, or KDM. Plus why do euro cars have specialized tools that can start from the the hundreds to the thousands of dollars (USD of Course)?

Euro Parts are more expensive for you because they have to travel half way around the Globe, for us europeans US and Japanese Parts are more difficult to come by and more expensive. The Specialized tool part I don't really understand either, probably some engineer who thought the job could be done better with a Unique piece of equipment. My father works on his own mercedes's and usually modifies his own special tools if the real deal is too expensive.

True that, true that. The term "German Engineering" isn't the argument-stopper it once was. Just look at the reliability of most BMWs and VWs nowadays... Most of my friends have german cars and motorcycles, and they all are more or less plagued with problems.

Quite many US market cars regardless of manufacter are made in the USA. Hence the poor quality. But enginereed/made in germany doesnt really mean anything nowadays. Modern VWs (and more and less everything in the concern) are notorious for cost cutting. Get a Toyota that is made in Japan and you might get a quality item.

Ed, that was a real creepy laugh over the Phaeton (Failton). It was a case of trying to sell too much steak with not enough sizzle & not enough street cred (reputation).

Ed, another great video on cars. My first car was a 1974 Super Bettle. It was a good first car, that went through snow like an all wheel drive car. I live in Michigan, metro Detriot, and back then we got a lot of snow. Keep up the great work Sir. Lance P.S. I also owned a 1980 diesel Rabbit. Not a great memory for a car.

My first car ever was a 95 Golf. Loved that car, and miss it every day. Still have a 95 Golf Cabrio. Back when they were still simple, reliable and fun to drive. The mk5 and 7 were both good too.

I remember in the early 2000s, I was just out of college and taking the bus to my first "big boy" job. It's hard to get around in the US without a car, so I was looking for something cheap. My mom, who's owned at least 4 Beetles and one Hippie Van, suggested "a cheap Volkswagen". I laughed and explained to her that VWs weren't so cheap anymore.

The Diesel-Time @VW started with the first TDI in the Audi 80 in 1992 & one year later with the Golf 3 TDI. And you forgot to mention the Pumpe-Düse TDI, a concept no other manufacturer tried to implement.

You mean in cars, but in trucks and ships "pumpendüse" diesels were pretty common from the 1950's.

A friend of ours has a diesel Golf sport wagon. It gets phenomenal fuel mileage. They love it. Its surprisingly quick too. It has a large cargo capacity, and is comfy on long hwy trips. I drove it a couple times, I'm considering one for my next commuter car.
