The M1 Garand may be the most iconic rifle in American history. It was instrumental in enhancing the lethality of our war fighters at the time and its impact on the outcome of WWII can’t be overstated. Mark Boardman and Jimmy Hamilton grab Alexander Lewis and Ryan Muckenhirn to talk about the form, function, history and unique attributes of this wood and steel masterpiece.

JC Garand was actually an expert in machine tool technology. He was not a gunmaker by profession. He's credited with the end product, but his real genius was in production. When you look at the numbers from Springfield from about mid 41 to 44, staggering. And the quality was incredible. He needs to be recognized for his real genius.

Having bought my first Garand over 40 yrs ago , my family members both WWII and Korea had stories about the rifle , one was when they ran short on ammo they’d scrounge clips and strip .30 cal machine gun belts and load the clips from them . When the troops were trapped on Corregidor , they had the Garand , but in the army’s infinite wisdom they had sent enough ammo but not in clips , so they had to pick up clips and reload them or single fire , there was still thousands of rounds left when they were forced to surrender , as I understand it , great show , thanks for the history lessons

A few notes to add. 1) Using that 9.5 pounds is great for hand-to-hand combat, especially using the stock to hit the face. 2) The Italians made the BM-59 chambered in 7.62 with a detachable 20 box magazine. 3) The original bayonet was the one used on the M1903 and was 16" long, from 1943 onwards the 10" version was used. 4) Fabulous stories about the Garand and other military arms.

Was familiar with the M1 since the early 60's with my parents being WWII vets. But never handled or shot one until I bought one through the CMP program in the 90's. The one thing I've noticed over the last three decades is that the M1 has that intangible quality today's weapons lack; "soul". It's something you don't think of until you're shooting it, then it begins to dawn on you.

I was driving home from a business trip in the summer of 2020 and got to around Anniston, AL and remembered that the CMP was there. I redirected on a whim. Got to the store and was welcomed with the statement "we just reopened from C19 shutdowns today and you're our first customer." Left with a M1 Garand as a complete impulse stop/buy. Best impulse buy ever.

Last year I got a RM1SERVICE for my son. My advice is you plan on going that route is to write a nice letter to make the preference what you are looking for. I wrote one about my great uncle who served in Army as a grunt in the marauders in Burma. He was one of 300 who started and ended the campaign. Anyways, long story short CMP sent a SA 1943 model with the stock correct stock. Now, the rifle was redone at some point back in the 50s with an arsenal engraving on the receiver. throat numbers was +1 and 0. Pretty darn CMP!

One of the factors that I haven't heard discussed was the fact that the Army mandated complete parts interchangeability among all M-1s. The Germans in particular were shocked to discover that you could take ten M-1s, disassemble them, mix up the parts and assemble ten now-different rifles, and they would all work reliably. The Kar-98K, on the other hand was assembled from matched parts that had to be kept together. The three things that were important were (1) they worked (meaning the reliability in the hands of troops was very high) (2) they were completely interchangeable and (3) Springfield Armory and Winchester together made enough of them that every G.I. who rated one had one.

Two brand new trucks parked on my property with out of state plates. I inquired what are they doing. They showed me a map and were hired by the Air Force searching the government property that joins me. The government buried "some" 55 gallon drums filled with M-1 Garands covered in comsmoline. They found live 50cal. bullets, morter rounds, and lots of other stuff but not the Garands. I am still digging, lol.

I recently acquired an m1 in .308. The gas port needed to be drilled out an extra thousand. Additionally, I added a HOPCO USA rear sight mount - it allows me to use an Vortex Venom. The Venom, IMO, really increases my accuracy potential, moving from an 8 MOA FSP to the 3 MOA dot. Also, HOPCO USA makes a RMR footprint mount. That would allow the m1 to be used passively with Nightvision.

Get into reloading and save your brass. About 200-500 rds should be good enough for a while to recycle the brass you have. I go to the range with my two M-1s and run 5-8 clips through each one and find that entirely adequate. But reloading the M-1 ammunition - after the initial investment in press and other stuff (even Lee single stage is adequate) - is wa-a-a-y cheaper than buying it.

The short barreled version of the Garand is known as the 'tanker' model. The barrel is shortened to 18" for easier maneuverability inside vehicles. In dense jungle, this version was scrounged when possible because it was easier to handle when every plant around you seems to want to snag, grab, or trip you.

Watching C&R would help you sort out the time lines and relationships between all the rifles. Even though C&R primarily does WW1 the history leading up to the Garand in the 1930's IE the interwar years are covered by them as well as this year that's the direction their videos are going. So soon you'll see a full history. Just a suggestion guys knowledge is power.

you press the enbloc until you feel or hear, in battle, feel more than hear, the op rod catch disengage. The bolt is hung up on the first round, due to the tension in the clip. Some clips were made to less tolerances and hence less friction and allow the first round to load without bumping the op rod forward. Slam fires... controversies with standard primers, seated improperly, etc... Out of battery? Safety systems in receiver/bolt need to be inspected regularly when used for competition, but the once or twice a year shooter at a steel plate, not so much. Visible wear shows up before actual measureable wear would.

The M-1 C replaced the Marines not caring for the A4 Unertl scoping sniper. The C sniper version never made to service, due nearing the end of the war. It was good enough for the war but not satisfying for the shots needed, 800 yards wasn't good enough, the glass wasn't good enough. The D comes along with a fixed 4x that required a different mount. The M1D was adopted as a substitute for the M1C, creating an easier-to-produce fallback option in case production facilities were unavailable to build the required amount of M1C rifles. Neither saw action in WW2 or Korea, but in the Lebanon, 1958. War pressure finances were in the front of it, and the biggest issue was the US wasn't on board with sniping at that time. During vietnam Marine units were pulling teeth for a program, but only one unit got the ball rolling sort of and was limited, Hathcock and his commander EJ Land, which I had the privilege of a brief phone conversation when he was the NRA secretary at the time, about a neighbor of mine who was spewing misinformation of thier program. Don't believe everything you read or hear Mark. Standard infantry was the M-1. Carbines were paratroops, mainly, tank divisions, supply, communications, or do the math on how many troops land x's roughly, all three manufactures, and get an idea of how many troops had them and how any who did not. SA 3.5 million, H&R 5.4 million, IH 5.2 million, WRA 4 million. Approximately 18.1 M-1's were produced. 57,000 american troops landed Utah and omaha beaches that Day.

design changes were due to port pressure due to the .30 cal bullet producing higher pressures. A lighter bullet alleviated that along with powder charge, but the bullet generally helped that I believe. Even armor piercing bullets were developed to suit the rifle. JC Garand was a tool maker with his father in Canada at the time and took a job as R&D at Springfeild in 1922. He not only developed the rifle but also the tooling to make everything on the rifle from the wood to the internal mechanisms too. What amazed me the most was the timing of JCG coming Springfeild and finalizing the rifle 5 years before we entered the war AND being able to produce plenty to go around. The brits had LL rifles but never used them. Forget RI auction for an M-1 unless you are rich. CMP is the best way, unless you find them on consignment at a gunshop. The price of a service grade I payed for back in 2010 was 575, 642.90shipped. They only went up 75 buck since I bought mine but are rack grade. Here is thier description...CMP has a very limited amount of M1 Garand, SA or HRA Rack Grade Rifles available. These rifles will be offered mail order, sold as is, with no exchanges. The rifles are rack grade (rough but functional and have been test fired).

enjoying this video... All you need is a round od ammo to pop the retaining pin out of the receiver to dismantle the op rod spring and adjoining parts. It takes the tension off the other parts and isn't that difficult. It won't bite ya ! LOL I'm sure you know that by now though !

30-06 touches you, you are out of the fight. I shoot 2 inch groups on my 170 yard range and the 06 will tear you in half at 600 yards. Maybe the rifle is dated. Mr Garand himself is on tape lamenting his age and the challenges that lay ahead in military firearms.engoneering. The rifle's cartridge and accuracy are in no way obsolete. In fact, I have modern arms, but you better get to work and git er done with them, because if I touch you with a 168 grain Nosler Partition, the fight is over.

You do not want to single load an M1 by just dropping a round in the chamber and letting the extractor slam over the extractor lip of the cartridge. It's oneof the very few ways to break a Garand. As far as ammunition. It's all about peak pressure, rather than powder, bullet weight, etc ( although those affect pressure greatly). Any commercial hunting or target ammo that has peak pressures below 50,000 is fine, per CMP. And GI got extremely proficient with reloads. To where it was foolproof. These are a man's rifle and take a manly technique. No Lilldippers
