I eat fat like it's going out of fashion. That's because I researched the topic of cholesterol before I started keto. Since LDL is a transport molecule, I was more interested in my triglycerides which are the actual 'fat'. My LDL numbers have risen which is logical since I'm eating loads more dietary fat but amazingly (or not according to my new knowledge) my triglycerides have gone down. The miracle of science proven in this N1.

I have been on a ketogenic diet for 4 years. I lost 50lbs (work in progress), cured a ton of health problems, ditched a load of meds, Omeprazole, statin and BP meds and look 10 years younger! I'm 64. Last August, at work on an NHS chemotherapy day ward, I suddenly felt unwell, indigestion, NO, actually chest pain. I don't like much fuss but quietly asked a colleague to take my BP etc. My BP was 235/120 crickey, usually 130/70. Long story short they took me to A & E where I was eventually diagnosed with a Myocardial infarction with a troponin of 423 and admitted to a cardiac bed. I have worked in this hospital since I was 18 so know everyone, such lovely people. But I lay there thinking, "omg I have got this all wrong, Drs Berry, Fung, Cywes et al who I have devoured all their work for all these years, and now here I am, bloody clogged up"! Anyway, the following day I had an angiogram. The consultant told me that my coronary arteries were remarkably clear. A couple of small ?old plaques. I was classed as a MINOCA a Myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries. Possibly coronary spasm or embolism, actually I have AF so recommenced my Apixaban that I had stopped (keto doesn't cure everything apparently)! In my opinion my biggest problem at this time was stress. But I was so happy and stiil believe I am on the right track. I have tightened up my diet and exercise even more, declined the statin, and feel very well. The hospital never did follow me up! Whatever, I look after my own health. Just take my Apixaban and my BP is back to normal. Thank you Dr Cywes for everything you have taught me.

The whole if it’s solid…wasn’t new to me. What’s new is the recommendation to limit fish, because too much metal is being concentrated into their food chain. I have a friend with MS and she swears it was triggered from living near the beach and eating fish most nights for years.

Hi Dr Cywes, another informative, yet entertaining post. 🙂 Here's a little tidbit I'd like to add, something I often tell fat-phobes. Most doctors will tell their overweight patients that they need to lose weight. What kind of weight? Fat, right? So let's say a patient needs to lose 30lbs; that would mean that the doctor expects his patient to cause 30lbs of stored fat to be released from storage and be burnt for fuel. Noone in the med community would debate that would be unhealthy. However, if a patient tells his doctor that he wants to injest 30lbs of lard (not all at once, of course) the doctor would throw a fit! Heart attack!!! But how many have bothered to look and see that human and pork fat are extremely similar in composition? Why would metabolizing our fat stores be a healthy thing, but eating near identical fat(s) be the death of us??? Illogic at its finest...

My Neurologist classified me on my medical record "non-compliant pt." since I refused his statin Rx. His resident (also in the room) agreed with me and was familiar with the medical research I was referencing in my discussion that a Keto dieter has a different consideration when assessing LDL level. I asked for a more complete blood work assay; the Neurologist outright refused the blood test. I can't get the "non-compliant pt" designation taken off my medical record. I was told to write a letter to the Dean of the Medical School. I did. No response. I am having trouble securing a new/different Neurologist with this "non-compliant pt." designation on my medical record.......

My doctor continues to push the statins. I've been keto for over 2 yrs and keep telling him I'm not going to take the statins. Wonder if he'll stop pushing them if I say that my high LDL count is due to needing all those LDL boats to carry the fat I use to fuel my body instead of sugar 😂.

LDL carries vitamins, enzymes,, coenzymes, proteins and fat to tissues, but for using as fuel is HDL, because HDL is from adipocytes (storage) to liver (and using it as fuel), while LDL is from liver to tissues, but not for storage, because fat storage is made by triglycerides.

I'm in a similar boat. Had a series of TIAs a few weeks ago following a bout of COVID (which I'm convinced was the source of the clots), and tests revealed underlying atherosclerosis in one of my carotids. Doc wanted to put me on a statin. I refused and put myself on strict keto. I've been eating keto for 18 months, but got very slack in the first 6 months of this year, no doubt causing the final bit of damage that left me vulnerable and screwing up my blood numbers.

Thanks for this video, and great to hear the name Zoe Harcombe, she deserves to be better known. As noted in the Womens health initiative, and other research following, cholesterol levels simply do not correlate with cardio vascular disease risk, either LDL, HDL or more recent sub-divisions of lipo-proteins like VLDL or small, dense HDL. (Correlation does not prove causation. BUT lack of correlation disproves causation.)

The purists would have us believe that Olive Oil is the greatest thing since sliced bread and contains 'healthy' mono-unsaturated fat. They will use it on/in everything. A quick look on the label shows that it is, in fact, 14% saturated fat. As soon as I point it out to my friends, they are horrified that someone MUST be adulterating their oil and they are going to use a better brand next time!! The better brand is usually a high cost super virgin brand and, guess what, it also contains 14% saturated fat.

So I’ve been thinking about this for the past year, and in my mind, using myself as a sample, I feel that people that do not understand the difference between the 3 fats, as well the difference between how those fats occur in nature vs. being man-made, is down to the text book defintion of the word “saturated”. When people hear “saturated”, the think of concentration, fill, clog, e.t.c. (mono|poly)unsaturated “appears” healthier because of the text book defintion of “unsaturated”, which would be interpreted as unconcentrated, empty, unclogged. I know, totally illogical and unscientific - but, people are typically simple 🤷🏾‍♂️.

You need to be well fasted before any tests as triglycerides will be high in chylomicrons. But not too long either as they will also be in VLDL after being transported from body fat to be burned. Sweet spot is probably 12-18 hours. Coffee and alcohol can also raise trigs.

@@ketontrack it is a minefield. But if your weight loss starts to stabilise, your trigs should also start to settle down. I’ve come to learn so much about cholesterol recently as my trigs are consistently higher than I’d like even after 18 months strict carnivore. If there’s nothing else going on in the background (thyroid, coffee etc) I’d expect your trigs to be lower with a slightly shorter fast. Look at Dave Feldman’s Cholesterol Code site. He’s done some articles and videos on the optimal pre test fast duration.
