Years ago I used to make hand made teddy bears, customized to my friends children's styles. The one key ingredient that could not be bulked up too much was the inner stuffing. If done right, the bear looked natural and became the child's favorite toy, but if "Overstuffed" it became a rupturing horror to look at. A house can only hold so many possessions, our minds can only process so many details at one time, and our life only lasts for so many days. Minimalism offers peace of mind, usefulness and practicality and it keeps us from being "overstuffed" with things rather than experiences.

I worked for a storage company for a few months and I could never rap my head around the money people would waste on paying for a storage unit. For a temporary solution yes, it makes sense but, I've seen so many different situations that for most part are not good. I think people just don't do the math like you mentioned to realize the cost of storing something that can be replaced when needed.

Guys, after almost 3 years I got rid of so much stuff, just by selling them off. I got almost 4000 dollars on the way. I did have 52 Stephen King books on my shelf, i sold them all, they got new homes all over sweden. And I'm happy its a recycle friendly minimalism. Thank you all for the inspiration, hope to see you guys in US once the pandemic pass and things get a bit better.

Isn’t a hoarder just the average consumer who keeps what they buy instead of donating to Goodwill or contributing to the land fill problem? I mean, I watched an episode of the Hoarders and I realiized that in the mounains of stuff were most of the items I have purchased in my life at one time or another. Minimalism should help the planet as well as our sanity. Maybe instead of donating to Goodwill, we should shop at Goodwill. I daily ask myself this question, “Can 7 billion people live the way I live without doing harm to the planet. So far the answer is no. But just asking the question helps me to focus on my purchases and my lifestyle. You guys are definatly part of the solution. Keep up the good work.

actually thats a solution, I think, Me and my husband decided to just buy new whatever really really needs to be new. But if we can buy used, even if we have to make a little magic to make it work then we do. I just comment this to let you know guys that it is possible...we have 4 kids and that has never been an excuse for beeing careful with our planet and consumism. They indeed are the motivation for us to try to help this world.

I find that zero or low waste goes well with minimalism. The last time my husband needed to replace a pair of jeans, they tore in a rather tricky spot 😱🤦 he went to a second hand charity shop and found a great pair. It sometimes takes a bit longer to find what you want, but it's totally doable.

Sadly we don't live in a world that makes quality items. As a poor child I grew up on second-hand items from a second-hand store but most of the time the items didn't last as long because they weren't made with quality and most people didn't take care of the item. There's nothing wrong with used or new. But I think it also depends on the item.

Recently I got rid of some stuff that we had been keeping at our place for a longtime without using them. One of them is a treadmill that we didn’t use. We thought of taking it to Goodwill store. But before that we thought we will just keep it in front of our house and see if anyone takes it. We wrote “free” on a paper and taped it on the treadmill. After two days we saw that it was gone! I am really happy that someone took it!

I follow A Small Wardrobe on KZfaq and I’ve learned from her that one of the keys to true minimalism is to stop bringing more things into your home in the first place that you’ll eventually have to declutter and minimize again. And one way to do this is to be more intentional with the “getting rid of stuff” process. Don’t just take all your belongings and drop them off at Salvation Army. That’s too easy. You’ll end up buying more stuff to just replace your empty closet. You should actually take the time to sell your old items or gift them to others meaningfully to people who actually want them. Don’t just drop your stuff off at the thrift store and make it someone else’s problem. Yes, it’s a lot more work to sell and regift you’re items. But it’s more intentional too and you’ll learn not to make the same mistakes of buying those unnecessary items again. And trust me, I’ve made this same mistake of going from minimalist to hoarder without even realizing it. Anyone else out there done the same? 🙋‍♀️
@MichelleNovalee
@MichelleNovalee 4 жыл бұрын
Dickie Angenson it’s not my philosophy. It’s “A Small Wardrobe’s” philosophy. Doesn’t mean you have to follow it. To each their own. Take what helps you and dismiss what insults your soul. For me personally, I needed this advice because I’ve had trouble **not** bringing things in. I think selling my things will help me be more mindful in the future to not make the same buying mistakes again. Of course, donate and throw out what you can’t sell. But it doesn’t hurt for some people to try and sell their stuff.
@ArtyAntics

Michelle Novalee knowing how much effort it is to let something go in a way that meets my requirements for disposal or gifting intentionally has definitely made me think a lot harder before buying. Something else that helped me not buy was researching sustainable materials, ethics like modern slavery issues etc... it’s so hard to buy things that meet my standards and I have to get very intentional about everything.

This is such an important point you make!!! I was hit like a ton of bricks when during the pandemic I sorted through and decluttered a lot of clothes and shoes-perfectly good, just don’t fit anymore- then I found out that charity shops don’t take any donations due to the virus! Now I’m stuck with a carload of stuff. Maybe it would have better not to have these things in the first place.

I hear you. Nowadays I mostly stick to certain brands that carry pretty affordable quality basics. I look for companies that have fair wages & care about the environment. Having fewer pieces, but pieces I can feel good about all around pushed me to take care of my clothes more. By the time I’m ready to let them go I try to sell, donate, almost never straight to landfill. Oh and ForDays is one of those Eco friendly brands I shop from, they let you donate your clothes to them and they recycle it for you, they give you discounts for their items after.

Hey! If you are still interested in finding a place to donate other than Goodwill, I encourage you to not go to thrift stores in the future. I learned that since thrift stores main goal is to resell, they will throw out (and often ship overseas to dispose) whatever they can't sell in a short period of time and it just adds to the waste stream. Did you know that the fashion industry is the 2nd biggest polluter in the world?! There are women's shelters and homeless shelters in every city that will give your stuff for free to people in genuine need. Let me know if you want me to help you find a few in your area. This is an important cause so I am happy to help, gratis!

@@clovermark39 yeah, I was thinking that. But in terms of water used to make an item of clothing in the first place and the other pollutants used during manufacture and then the shipping etc etc. I still feel that dyeing would be more environmentally friendly than purchasing an entirely new piece of clothing. @@teacher_ps I use Dylon, I think it's very good. I know other people use Rit which isn't available in the UK. The dye lasts a long time. It will fade overtime but it doesn't wash out completely. So if you dyed a white item black it would remain black but it would lighten after time just like any item. I think you can also use colourfast products to make clothing keep their colour longer.

AmoreHk oh.....that is so tough. My mom died 14 years ago, and my siblings and I and our partners cleaned out her apartment. It was very emotional. We all took what we wanted, and donated the rest. It felt odd getting rid of it all, but it was a valuable lesson too. Nothing is permanent, and our belongings are just anchors. The more possessions we own, the more complicated our lives are. Our mom was a shopper. She had tons of stuff. I wish you strength and peace going through your dad’s belongings.

I am currently in the middle of an interesting experience. I have spent the last five years slowly downsizing our family household. A year ago we bought a much smaller home in another state. We had to have some duplicates during this year as we visited this house every weekend until we finally moved in. We have everything from both homes PLUS our son and his family moved in with us. Not only do I feel like I am starting over, I feel crowded, messy and discombobulated. It's exhausting. I never realized degree of the emotional connections to the space I live in until I took this huge step backwards. No worries though. We are making lots of progress and will find our peaceful spaces again.

A good way to repurpose stuff is a local Facebook Buy Nothing group. (It’s amazing what people can use. For example, I know someone who is moving and someone posted the very large box from a child’s car seat. Multiple people asked for it, I got it. Plus it is great getting to know people in the local community. I have connected with new people and reconnected with some people I’ve lost touch with. I usually post in the Buy Nothing group prior to donating elsewhere. Since you post single items, so you can create a steady flow of items going out of your home. You can also ask for things. For example, recently I asked for boxes to use for moving, a certain kind of empty bottle for bottling kombucha (my new skill), an empty five gallon paint bucket to use as a disaster potty.

Instead of things as gifts, I always ask people to donate money (adequate amount to what they would spend on me) to the animal shelter in my hometown in my name (or theirs, however they prefer). Has been working out fine so far. I’m in Germany, we do not put animals down when nobody wants them (thank goodness), sometimes they spend their entire life in shelters, and that costs a lot

Part of the issue with having"stuff" is that we tend to only be aware of the benefits (which are obvious) but less aware of the costs, which are less obvious. Much of this is about doing a cost/benefit analysis when considering new acquisitions.

In most communities (even rural ones) it is easy to get rid of unwanted items. If residents aren’t desperate for money, unwanted but still usable items can be either advertised in the FREE section of a free online site or set at the curb with a cardboard sign saying FREE on a day when the trash is not being picked up. Like magic, the stuff will disappear in mere minutes. Donating to charities that actually benefit society (not all do “good” works,) is also a nice idea, but takes more time and effort to accomplish. I donate large items such as furniture and working appliances to reputable charities and donate unexpired unopened foods to local soup kitchens and food banks, both of which need donations all year long.

Re Katia's question about buying multiples in different colours, I've struggled with this too. Two things have helped me. The first is reminding myself that it's that kid in the candy shop situation - and having more makes each less special just like the ice cream analogy. I also remind myself not to be the spoilt brat that gets everything. Choosing two favourites is indulgent enough. Second reminder is that fashion changes and there'll be future options to look forward to and love - I won't be stuck living in the past with 4 of a slightly outdated item. The two that I chose will have been worn, loved, and ready for replacement 🙂

I think the question to be asked in the “joy” situation should be different. Because this whole concept of joy can become fallacious in many different scenarios. So, instead of “will buying this bring me joy?” (focus on the act of acquiring something per se) it’s more accurate and productive to ask “will keeping this after buying it contribute to or be in the way of my joy, sense of peace, self image and life flow?” (Focus on what that ownership means past the dopamine rush). Internalizing this distinction has brought so much clarity to my own journey and, more importantly, completely changed my perspective towards impulse buying. The other thing that helps is to think about the quote “if it costs your peace, it’s too expensive”. Because then, even items on sale can lose their appeal - sure, the financial cost of acquiring it is low, but the cost to your peace and life flow, having to manage these items down the line, adds a cost that really doesn’t make a lot of sense. This mentality has completely changed my purchasing habits and I no longer buy things on impulse. Yes, I used to get things in different colors too.

Thanks for this. I just have an issue with Goodwill. We’re not really donating. We are giving our stuff to a store for profit. I honestly try to first give to friends, then donate to a charity, then free cycle, then thrift stores that are local, then last resort Goodwill. This is my biggest hang up is just tossing good stuff to Goodwill. I really want a place that helps the poor. Any suggestions or ideas ☺️

For over half a century I’ve tried every way I can think of to get my husband to get rid of literally thousands of items from his childhood. He has never parted with a single one. My oft repeated example of purging my own items (even things I loved and was very sad to give up) prior to our many moves has only made him happy - because he knew there would soon be even more room for everything he has kept plus the probability of adding more to his hoard. He has never sacrificed anything of his own. Because the majority of his deteriorating items are books (which are “sacred” to many people,) I am hoping to outlive him so I can arrange for a traditional Viking funeral. Those crumbling yellowed pages should burn very well. 😏

One thing I thought you would mention more of is that he has the idea of a home after retirement. I don’t mean to be glum but if he is active military and doesn’t come home he is leaving that for his family. Also he might end up injured or even just a normal situation of having to go to a retirement home. Those are normally small apartments. I had to stop working because of health. I thought I would take a year out and go back so I kept all my suits. 5 years on I still can’t go back to work and it’s looking like if I did it wouldn’t be to a job that requires suits daily. My point is I’ve learned to keep things for my life right now because tomorrow might be completely different to how I imagined it.

I have a problem with hoarding and amassing makeup, and body care products. I have three body washes, 5 different shampoos, 2 conditioners, three face washes, 5 different types of concealers, 4-5 make up foundations.... I decided to use all the products before I buy one more!!!! That’s my goal for the rest of 2020 and heading in to 2021. Not stepping my foot in a rite aid until I’m running out of the last one.

My wife and I do the same thing with our 8 year old daughter but I wonder if this will have the opposite effect later on in life and she or any other child experiencing this will become a hoarder because "my parents made me give my stuff away". What's the best way to approach this possible situation?

I had the same questions. Check the series of The Minimal Mom about kids toys. It made amazing difference for my boys. Now from time to time they just come to me with a toy and say "Let's give this to another child"

When my kids were young (1-5yrs) I would declutter for them but later started to include them in the process. Now my kids will ask for help to clean out their rooms when they feel overwhelmed with their things. Kids, just like adults, enjoy a sense of order and control in their lives. Let them see you model decluttering and they will likely jump in.

My mum discarded things and I bawled my eyes out. It definitely led to some hoarding tendencies in early adulthood. I would say don't force it. Some things to keep in mind might be the 'container rule'. They're allowed to keep what fits into a certain space.

(29:51) I have one thing which I kept, because as a picture it wouldn't make sense☝️:) . I have a bunch of small caricaures, which I have glued in a book. There is just something magical about flipping through it 😄. As a picture it is just not the same feeling.

For young children, it’s actually good to not have them go through their things every time you thin out. They have a different level of understanding and sometimes it’s actually very stressful for them. They actually have a foggy sense of reality and will often create a personality for a toy that doesn’t turn off when the game is over. I have my son help me thin out every other time and don’t usually tell him if I throw away a broken one.

To the story about Goodwiil and the Lines, I think it's not only decluttering but people are moving out of california (or at least trying/preparing to) sell their house and go, en masse and want to lighten the load once they can buy a place somewhere different. My guess is they are going to Arizona, nevada, montana, idaho and rural washington / oregon. And for the really hardcore, Texas. 😂

You say that things only add value when they either serve a purpose or bring joy. So far so good. Then Joshua goes on saying that a thing can only bring joy when shared with others. Me, as a person who, if I am being honest with myself and look at my actions, finds it hard to place relationships on my values list, I found myself disagreeing with this statement. I do get a lot of joy from spending time in outdoors on my own, so I immediately I thought about my gear. On the second thought, it does not bring me joi in itself, it is a tool and serves a purpose. I am having hard time to come up with a thing that brings me joy, because when I think about it, at the end of the day it only serves some purpose. Can you give me an example on a thing that just brings you joy without it serving a purpose?
@Lumpy_Peter

@Heather OToole Fair enough. I think one can definitely get joy from a painting or a music album on his/hers own without sharing it with others. Or is there something I don't get? Just trying to figure out why I was so triggered by this statement. :-)
