As coaches, sport scientists, and athletes we love to intellectualize our sport. There is an attempt to understand as much as possible so we can prescribe training to maximize performance. Behind all of this, the person carrying out this training can get lost amidst a myrid labels.
In this episode, I sit down Newton Cheng, National champion powerlifter and the director of performance and health at Google, to discuss his life's journey. This journey involves burnout, anxiety and depressive symptoms, and understanding who he is and what he values. After struggling during the start of the pandemic, he turned his life around by doing the deep work, finding his values and pursuing them.
This show is dedicated to the people who compete, coach, and study the sport, but are much more than that.
