This was pretty cool and pairs well with the jawless huh exercises from ep 35 I do a similar where you close open glottis then phonate close open phonate stopping the air on the sternum (appoggio) another variant of this higher skill procedure. Thank you so much for your wisdom and generosity I must schedule some lessons with you. I am a second year vocal student who trains daily and am improving even when it doesn’t sound like it.

The voice docs would faint if they saw what I do with a glottal voice. HAHAHA It depends when I use it. I have several different choices and I have noticed that my range varies quite a bit from the full on glottal that sounds like a crow or Eartha Kitt and a clear crisp Broadway sound. My traditional country wouldn't be what it is without the glottal stylings of Hank 1 ... Or the round tones of Patsy Cline. I am glad I have learned to control my voices and have learned how to avoid blowing out a chord. I was an incredibly powerful singer but Blowing all the time and really belting it out can get you into trouble. I have hurt myself. Best rule for me was... if it hurts your not doing it correctly. TY SO Much I can't believe that at 60 I am a better vocalist than when I was thirty. I think you extended my shelf life :D and I tell people all the time... When they ask Raven can you teach me how to sing? I am like no BUT I KNOW WHO CAN!

This was an epiphany, since glottal sounds are something that I can't even sing WITHOUT, and I've been wondering why my voice always does that little click/squeak at first. Now that I know what it is, maybe I can learn to avoid it at least sometimes.
@rzeka
@rzeka 7 жыл бұрын
I study phonetics, and I noticed that whenever I made a glottal stop while singing - especially at the beginning of a word - there was this little kind of crack after the glottal stop. Pretty much the same as you're describing. To avoid this, I try to replace the stop with a really quiet h sound, but I don't think that's a very good way of solving the problem.
@NewYorkVocalCoaching
@NewYorkVocalCoaching 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the silent H is a good way to soften the beginning of a word. Just make sure it isn't a true breathy H sound. -NYVC

My voice breaks a lot and theres a lot of air in voice too, head voice is prettttyyy airy too. Biggest issue is my voice breaks when i do D4 and above although starting F4 i am very comfy in mixed voice. I thought register transitioning issues but this and epi 104 on voice compression exercise kinda gives me INSTANT result! Way more connected voice. Im hoping that doing these often would eliminate voice cracks or breaking! I'm a bass baritone ig E2-D#4(i can in chest voice when it doesnt break)-D#5(this is mixed, my head voice breaks at B4 too but rarely if it doesnt it can go upto C6) sharing in hopes of suggestions from other amazing singer viewerss!

I'm still unsure about the glottal exercise. I've done it once a day for four days, is that too much? Too little? I know myself to sing very airily; especially during simple warm-ups, and I use my head voice on impulse a lot (I'm a Soprano II for a non-professional concert choir). Are glottals what I should be focusing on first?

Do glottals help to stop a leaky sound, aka "blasting air"?
@NewYorkVocalCoaching
@NewYorkVocalCoaching 6 жыл бұрын
Blasting air could be you are pushing from you abdominal muscles. If it is just a cord closure issue, then it will help. I'd say to check the breathing. Doing trill exercises is a great way to get the breath under control. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z5aqh7yX1Nm2n40.html -NYVC

Huh, so this is why my voice sound raspy at the end and start of phrases and when i sustain notes, i was suspectung i was adding compression unconciously since a few months ago as singing and speaking has becomd harder for me, i also have felt my voice becoming more and more throathy so maybe that is why i sound like Chewbacca sometimes. Maybe after my voice heals (it is not in the best condition, it hasn't been since like october) maybe ig will go back to mormal

Hey Justin I loved this video. I have been told that I should use a good glottal compression (having the feeling of holding your breath) only in the upper register as it makes me sustain notes for longer. However in my middle register I use a moderate compression. I have been also told that if you want to sustain a belt you need a good compression. Is this true?

Press... can be too much compression into vocal chords, can be too much air against the vocal chrods... or activating muscles around larynx, in the neck, which press on vocal little muscles and make everything harder.
