The Katahdin Region of northern Maine is a winter playground for snowmobilers and snowmobile trail riding adventure, and home base for many riders is Shin Pond Village. Pay a visit to the town of Mount Chase, in the shadow of Mount Katahdin, for a journey to the fabled “Ghost Trains” of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Along the way, you'll stop for the night at remote and rustic Libby Camps, where sportsmen and winter travelers are always welcome and the food is delicious. Libby's also sells gas so you can refuel your sled.
The so-called Ghost Trains are a pair of massive locomotives and their fuel cars that were abandoned in the 1930s after being used to transport logs from Eagle Lake to Umbuzooksus Lake. Today, you can visit the trains by snowmobile on a ride from Shin Pond, a round-trip of around 120 miles. The route takes you along ITS 85, which is groomed for much of the way, save for the 13 miles of trail along Chamberlain Lake. Along the way, you may see bald eagles, deer, lynx, and moose.
If you don't have your own snowmobile, you can rent a Polaris Indy and Klim snowmobile gear from Shin Pond Village: www.shinpond.com
Shin Pond also offers housekeeping cabins, a store, gas, and a restaurant.

My grandfather ran those trains for a few seasons when they were in use. They were hauled in over the ice--by horses--imagine! We called that short rail line slot, from Eagle Lake over to Chamberlain and across to the west of it on a very long trestle, the Tramway. Hauling logs from Eagle Lake to Chamberlain took the value from the Allagash watershed, flowing into the St. John and eventually into New Brunswick, and put them on the Penobscot, at least until Telos Dam was built. That's another story. Logging wars were serious business. Exploding the competing dams was a thing :) The pilings and rails across the northwest end of Chamberlain were mostly still up last time I was there, many years ago. Have fun!

The nice thing about snowmobiling, you can go further and see more of Maine woods vs a ATV or UTV. You get to explore lakes and rivers a car driver will never see. I have been vacationing in ME since 1985. I hope to retire up there with in the next 8 years.....Great video, really enjoyed it.

Every time Maine enters the scene, the angels sing. The views from seaside to the mountains are one in a billion. Soothes the soul. ~Sadie, NH (future ME resident)

Further north way out in the middle of the northern Maine woods off an atv trail about a half hour walk are other abandoned trains. Northern Aroostook county has many hidden gems if you have the time and energy to search

I live and snowmobile in Idaho. I served 2 years in the Navy at Portsmouth, NH, Navy Yard from 1968 to 1970. Does Maine or NH have trails cresting mountain tops for snowmobile access?

Wonderful video. How far, by sled to the trains would you say it would be coming up from Millinocket?

Sorry we missed this comment. Not really sure on milage from Millinocket but easy enough to calculate from Maine trail maps. Or just give Shin Pond Village a call. I am sure they can advise.

WENT THROUGH THE ICE ON CHESSUMCOOK LAKE! I WAS SKIRTING THE TRAIL AS IT IS TERRIBLE AND SUNK INTO 3" OF WATER JUST UNDER THE SNOW. BE CAREFUL OR WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR. I TURNED AROUND AND SCOOTED BACK TO THE LAKEHOUSE.
