@@keyzone72 I'm running a 9.2 Pioneer Elite SC-57 receiver with front wides in my bedroom with 4 Infinity TSS-1100 as surrounds, 5 Infinity TSS-4000 speakers for the fronts, and 2 Infinity PS-8 subs. I'm running an 11.2 Onkyo TX-NR929 receiver with fronts wides in my living room with 9 Infinity P-363 speakers as the bed layer, 2 Infinity P-C350 center speakers as height speakers, and 4 Infinity PS-312 subs. Both receivers have DTS Neo:X upmixers which I leave enabled at all times, and both receivers are THX Ultra2 Plus certified. Sure you could go buy a newer 5.2 or 7.2 receiver with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for $1,000 with a bunch of licensing fees and streaming apps that will be obsolete in a few years with zero software/firmware support but it won't have enough channels to make use of overheads and won't support wides or have DTS Neo:X which in my opinion sounds better than DSU and DTS Neural:X. Also those will be lower model receivers with not the best build quality, not the best amp sections, and not the best DAC's. I prefer buying top of the line receivers from 10 years ago that have excellent build quality, amp sections, great DACs, great internal components and power supplies, great upmixers with support for front wides that still support the Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master cores that the modern object based codecs need to function so they aren't going to be obsolete for a while not to mention I didn't have to pay for all those stupid licensing fees and useless apps, if you want great sound, buy CDs or buy a Topping D50s DAC, use the USB audio out of your phone or laptop and stream lossless Amazon HD to your system, that way you can ensure that you are always up to date because everyone upgrades to the new state of the art phone every year, they should stop putting streaming apps in receivers and instead put that money into sound quality where it matters. Not only that but when I play Dolby Atmos and DTS:X movies my front wides scream because that signal is still panned hard left since the objects have been folded down into the core, and a lot of movies are mixed for front wides. Even if the metadata mixes the objects down into the 7.1 core it does it in a way where the more modern matrix style legacy processers like Neo:X will still place objects in the front wides and overhead very accurately because it has been encoded. Backward compatibility is still a consideration in the mixing process and matrix encoding has been going on for decades. The only issue with using and older receiver is it won't support 4k or 8k or HDR or high refresh rate and even if you use 2 separate HDMI cable one to receiver and one to the display it will not let your TV pass anything over 1080p 60Hz because of issues with EDID handshake, basically your old receiver is the weak link in the video chain and brings the TV down with it. But there is a solution. Buy a simple cheap "2 Port HDMI 10.2G Splitter, HDCP 2.2" that has 2 outputs. One goes to the TV and one to the receiver, now you have 4k/8k HDR and lossless surround! 👍😀

I never understood why Front Wides were so overlooked, and even discouraged by many. My matching JBL 590 Front Wides arrive this week to replace the stand-in 530s. Front Wides are nice and do add to the sound. In John Wick 3 they play the soundtrack and some effects through them. Helps make the soundstage bigger.

Love you channel, I'm planning on doing a big upgrade to my living room setup and the entire series has helped with the planning of it tremendously. One thing I haven't seen is how to place surrounds when they can't be slightly above ear level. In my living room I would have them up near the ceiling because of a dining table and a door that are in the way. I would point them down and angle them ofocurse. But do I aim the at the MLP, or slightly above it?

Great one Stephen, I've just made a change with my subwoofer configuration, with my Yamaha RX-A3070, from how I had it configured front/rear and like this I think I was halving my LFE impacted, because of LFE steering, like if LFE was being steered to front subs, the REAR'S where doing nothing, visa versa, so now it's monaural x2, I have 4 smaller subs, I can't believe the difference this made with LFE, all subs now are receiving LFE simultaneously, I have much more impact now, I watched BATTLESHIP last night and was nearly blown out my seat, with some explosions nocking the breath out of me LOL, I'll have to run ypao again I think and tweak things with PEQ, there's so much to learn and know, when setting up a good sound system, side's would be good, but my rooms full of speakers as it is with a 7.4.4 set up in an open plan living area.

Great content as always. This video released just in time. I'm planning wides in a 9.2.6. For wides I am using in wall Monitor Audio w280-IDC because it has a tweeter that can be aimed. Is the 15 degrees that the tweeter adjusts enough to effectively use as a wide? It's within Dolby spec at 55 degrees but I won't be able to point it at the MLP. I could possibly get it in a column with an angled baffle. Thoughts on this method?

When I do room plans with wides I usually use an Inwall in a 30 degree baffle but it's also a very wide dispersion speaker. Yours sounds like it should work fine with the pivoting tweeter.

I would like to learn more about SACD playback through an ATMOS Home Theater. I use a Sony STRZA5000ES processor with an extra 2 channel amp for a total of 7.4.4. When I play an SACD with the Sony DVPCX777ES Jukebox I tend to prefer using the "Neural:X" setting of the processor rather than "Multi Stereo" or "2 Channel" with subs. I suppose my question is : "how to" or "is there" a better way to get that multi channel effect from the DAC that is built into the SACD player without there being multi channel inputs on my Processor? Because using coax digital out from the SACD player negates the native multi channel chewiness of the disc. I really enjoy physical media. I understand that streaming is a thing. I'm asking specifically about this issue of processing the analog signal from my player. Are there magic preamps that can cook the multi channel in and feed an HDMI out? What is your best solution when mixing old SACD and new(er) ATMOS components? What are the sacrifices and drawbacks and workarounds etc. etc. Thanks for the free info. Sucks I had to forget it! 😊

If you simply don't have the processing, say you have a 7 channel bed layer, having the sides as bipole speakers at 90 degrees, as the right side of the bipole faces a bit to the fronts, doesnt this create a lesser effect of front wides ie more seamless panning or is that creating a null. Bipole in this case also helps with widening the sweet spot and both advantages would be desired. if it does create a null, whats your take on multi surround speakers for 5.1 rather than 7.1?
@hometheatergurus
@hometheatergurus 2 жыл бұрын
No a bipolar is a diffused sound. It can't place sound at a point it isn't physically at but it does have strong reflections as does a true wide dispersion monopole . You also have to place the mlp on axis to get the bipole effect so any time you see them installed where the seats of off to the side of the speaker it's installed wrong. AS for 5.1 vs 7.1 that depends on the room. If you have the room behind you for a 7.1 then you absolutely be running a 7.1. If your seat is on the wall then you don't have the room so you should stick with a 5.1. You're after what gives the best sound and sometimes the room and seating limits that.

Hi Steven, great video and most of use here don't need convincing the benefit of wides in a HT. My question is, how then do we get content to the wides? It seems for Atmos, which is the dominant format today, we are at the mercy of objects being placed in the wide locations. They would otherwise be silent in the atmos 'bed' track. For legacy formats, 5.1 /7.1 and lossless DTS HD /True HD, understand that the current Neural X (limited to 11ch) and latest DSU will upmix to wides, which is what we all love and want for that expansive front stage. However, we seem to be SOL for atmos track, or potentially using DTS:X Pro to upmix the base TrueHD track to engage the wides. Is that the scenario? Is there no way to enjoy native atmos tracks with 'bed' track using wides, and objects in wides?

I bought a ToneWinner AT-300 a little bit ago. Is it perfect and does it have a lot of the bells n whistles of its mid to upper tier competitors? No, but for the money it's hard to beat as long as you just need up to 13.1 immersive processing (9.1.4 or 7.1.6), and realize that it is a pre-amp that requires outboard amplification. No, it is NOT a 16 channel unit. TW counts the three independent sub outs as channels, when they are really one LFE channel+bass managed low frequency output split three ways. At least TW has been willing to work with their customers in ironing out the quirks in a timely fashion. They are now in the process of looking into adding DTS: X Pro given the Analog Devices DSP chip installed is capable of that DTS update (it's the same one used in the Denon and Marantz flagship models). I have heard it compared favorably to Denon units in terms of overall sound quality more than once.

Do 2 wides on the sides make it a 9.2.4 setup? I assumed also that the atmos 4 in the ceiling would accomplish this. I guess those are more for things flying over head? So what sort of processor do you need for this? I have a 16 channel one at present (AT300), not sure it can handle wides or not. I also thought there were height speakers for front and rear you could use.. and am unclear if you have 4 (or 6) ATMOS in the ceiling.. if you need the front and rear heights as well?

Yeah I watched a video on SpareChanges channel with the guy from Trinov (John?) and pretty much that's the exact reason they do so many channels and have Left Surround: Side 1, Side 2, Rear 1 and Rear 2 is so that you can reduce the time between speakers. I do wonder though at one point does it make sense to move from a 7.1.4 to a 9.1.4 in terms of investing more money into better speakers as not only is it 2 more speakers but you'd need to go from a Denon x3700h to a x6700h which is a $1500 jump + speakers. Especially since most native atmos mixes only really do 7.1.4 well I wonder when it's worth putting the extra money into more speakers.
@hometheatergurus
@hometheatergurus 2 жыл бұрын
If you can swing the $ do it. Current upmixers support wides and many are usually watching more non atmos than native and doing mostly upmixing anyways. Now for going beyond a 9.1.6 I wouldn't bother unless you have multiple rows and really want to get the best sound possible for all rows.

After seeing multiple theaters, the thing I liked the best were deeper rooms. My room doesn't have enough depth, so stuff that should pan around and go through the room happens very fast, and you don't get that separation. I'd love to add 2 front wides, but I don't have room for them. In fact, I'd like a center back too, but I'd need a Storm or Trinnov for that guy or I have to choose to lose both rear surrounds. I'm excited to move into a new house and build a bigger theater, so I can add more speakers. Can't wait to have side surrounds slightly behind me and front wides to widen the sound stage!
@hometheatergurus
@hometheatergurus Ай бұрын
Angles are angles so depth doesn't matter as long as the speakers are at the same angle. The speed objects pan is the same. If a sound moves from a main at 26 degrees to a rear at 150 degrees the timing to get from one to the other is exactly the same in a short room or a long room. Depth does help you get the rears further away so you get better imaging and better coverage but that's not a timing issue.

@hometheatergurus
@hometheatergurus Жыл бұрын
You may be responding to the wrong video, maybe one on 2 channel setup??? With a multichannel surround sound system we can place objects anywhere in the room and in a 3 dimensional space with newer formats like Atmos. We want a wide sound stage but absolutely don't want to smear the focus of our mains position as we need it for accurate object placement. The purpose of the wide is to help transition from main to surround, not to extend the main. We want to minimize the time sound is present in the surround for the reasons in the video. By your response, I'm assuming you didn't watch the video or maybe you did respond to the wrong video.

@@aussierob7177 You're missing the point of the wides and immersive formats. We don't want Mains to smear our room acoustics with a 3D sound from 2 speakers , WE don't want mains to smear with the wides or the surrounds, or the rears or the atmos. We need everything discrete and we don't want to smear the location of any speaker as that smears our object placement. Surround sound has different goals that you would in a 2 channel setup and what you're trying to do would be very destructive to a well designed immersive format room. We specifically control the reflections of the mains for a wide sound stage but also to not smear with the other speakers. The wide is used to bridge the main and surround by placing an actual source between them which doesn't mimic a reflection but has accurate timing as objects pass. This helps tremendously for our side seats as it minimizes how long objects are present in the close proximately surrounds and gives them actual panning vs the sound jumping to the surround and sounding unnatural. This in not something that can be in any way simulated using 2 channel CTC methods. We are adding sources to accurately control objects as they move around the room.

"...All you need is ..." I find these Debbie Downer responses amusing. When I considered going from Stereo to 5.1 over 20 years ago, I got a similar response. Then when I asked about going from 5.1 to 7.1, I was told it was overkill and a waste of money. But EVERYONE that was skeptical and discouraged me from adding more speakers than what THEY HAD and what THEY WERE USED TO, in actuality NEVER OWNED, TRIED OUT, or EVEN HEARD the very system they reject. There will always be people who claim "...all you need is..." and if what they have and use works for them, then great. But the home theater snobbery that some demonstrate really adds nothing constructive to the discussion. There are LOTS of people reporting that they are VERY pleased after investing in FRONT WIDE speakers, and others that HAVE tried it and were not happy wit h the results. And it is THOSE PEOPLE who bring the most value to the conversation.

Awesome video as usual. Any budget minded people using 2 old prologic (II) processors/receivers in 3 Stereo mode (LCR) to derive wide or other channels? Input Surround Left and Front Left to derive a new Left Wide channel? New Left output = Left side Surround, new center output = left wide. New right output = Front Left. Same on the right side with 2nd decoder. Also could be used to derive new top middle etc. Prologic II music mode allows you to choice how much goes to the new channel. In theory allows you to further upmix anything so may have some advantage to some processes/receivers which won't upmix Atmos that has 7 hardcoded bed level channels. I havent tried the above but did try deriving a rear center with one old processor when I only had a 5.1.4 processor (now have 7.1.4).

Been reading my posts or watching my videos cos I mentioned about this 8 or so plus years ago on a JBL forum. Background (retired) ex cinema projectionist UCI and Warner bros. UCI that I worked at when it was brand new 1989 to 1990 and then few years later Warner bros and now, retired from that cos 4k cinema isn't cinema okay lets move on. UCI used experimental overhead surrounds an and that was 1989. All speakers was EV. 35mm vic V in all screens Dolby CP55 with SRA5. I have memory capacity to remember each movie how it sounded felt like at many cinemas/auditoriums especially the THX cinemas. I started hearing this occasional phantom sound image between surround L R and front L R , phantom image floating between and thought that can be solved with a Pro Logic decoder looking at the panned signal of frequency/phase/level and place the sound in a new speaker position, easy. I never connected up the decoders for it and less than a year or two later I see there is front/wide available on a AVR. Internet is full of spies from companies peeking sneaking around, cos they are out of ideas and need to steal ideals. Its okay my thread posted still exists and would confirm the date. The Dolby EX, My idea and shared that idea in 1998 over the phone long distance, 9pm UK time (since uk offices was closed at time) and this, is before most of the forum sites existed and would have gladly shared the idea back then. fing dolby labs are. Well I spoke to eric kristofferson dolby labs new york, he was so interested in my idea I mean he was way too interested. I used a millennium dts decoder at time and connected the stereo surrounds to Yamaha DSR70pro and wow, Goldeneye dts, sounded way better it actually worked. the idea came to mind in 1989 while watching a movie in projection and listening to the booth monitor and thinking how those 70mm Indy 3, at the CIC Empire Leicester Square sounded with the split-surrounds and often I felt or it made me feel disorientated with the centre phantom sound image. So there it is. Overhead surrounds and I call them that cos they are not called atmos speakers, okay. atnos is an encode/decode just like all the rest. nobody I mean nobody calls their other speakers on the ceiling dtsx speakers, now do they? Overheard surrounds. Actually overhead surrounds flush x6 in the ceiling have been used with 70mm Cinerama at the Bournemouth closed down original odeon and even played part for 'star wars' feb '78 and heard that star destroyer like nobodies business in screen 1. screen 2 downstairs even used overhead surrounds and side/back wall surrounds so it was fully "immersive storytelling" and I bet dolby labs have swept that cinema under the mat along with UCI experimental 1989 overhead surround. I bet you didn't see this post coming now? Overhead surrounds are basically stereo pairs of heights 1 2 and 3 on Denon avc-x8500h, and I use some cheap Dolby SA10 which is basically a modified Dolby CP45 as well as using some CP45 in my THX JBL reference x110 JBL cinema pro speakers at 38.000kw THX. I use the decoders connected up, and yes I use the pre-outputs from the AVR connected to some pro cinema Dolby Stereo CP200 and duel pair Sony SDDS D3000. Very complex wiring that isn't for the average home cinema. So with SA10 connected to the stereo signal I now get new centre overhead that I called DOG channels. One DOG for height 1, second DOG for height 2 and third DOG for height 3, so the signal often moves around zigzagging/side to side/ along the speakers far more accurately than any dubbing stage/cinema or even trinnov owners home cinema and it is easy-peasy to set-up. I also run matrix below surround and not one single home cinema has such a system like mine. Oh I seen some neat ideas like, bass boss hover boards, rather cool I think. So until a proper atmos mark II version with discrete stereo pair arrays for below surround comes about, I shall be enjoying, 'unbroken' at the limit or 'gravity'. As for front wides on the Denon AVC-X8500H sigh, sigh, sigh the trade-off if I want front/wide I got to trade off the back surround, screw you dolby labs. I may as well connect up the other atmos avr and program that for back surround and then program front/wide in the denon and with both AVR connected via HDMI like, someone else did I may as well do that.

The left one goes between the front left speaker, and left side surround speaker (you can imagine where the right one goes). You can see them in a Dolby 9.1.4 setup. At the moment a lot of Atmos tracks are hard coded with 'only' 7 base channels, so you won't hear them unless you use an upmixer, but more films should come out utilising the front wides. Not a lot but anytime you're watching anything in 7.1, 5.1 etc, they are used every bit as much as the surrounds and rears. DSU does an amazing job of upmixing to them.

@@hometheatergurus Maybe, but i do have a Atmos/Auro 13.x setup and I can truly say, there is no sound on the wides, maybe 1/20 movies. Use Maverick, use Nolan, use anything, there is no sounfmd. Why? Because the studios „save money“ once the tone Master wants to create the Sound. It‘s still too expensive, unfortunately… My opinion

@@jonathan9506 yeah we know they're not always used in a mix. Anytime you're watching anything 7.1 or less they are alive! That's not even an opinion but just how it is. If budget allows I highly recommend them.

Maybe 1% of people who have a Home Theater will do this. It is completely Ridiculous. Dolby Atmos is a Huge Scam. People are spending Thousands of dollars on Speakers that are turned off 90% of the time. At most you will have 4 Atmos Speakers which are only turned on during Action scenes in Action Movies and some TV shows. I Spent the Money. I Spent thousands of Dollars buying a 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos Home Theater setup. I noticed that my Atmos Speakers never turned on at All in 90% of the Movies and TV Shows I watch. For Music they are Never used. I have seen many comments online where people sold their Atmos Speakers and went to 2.0 Stereo System or to a 5.1 System. They felt like they were Lied to when they bought their Dolby Atmos Home Theater Systems. This video is Garbage Propaganda.

If you aren't blown away by atmos it's poor gear or poor setup or both. Done right it's amazing! Unfortunately atmos is very often poorly laid out with heights, huge overhead gaps, downfiring speakers that don't aim etc and end up with very poor performance and a sad owner.

@hometheatergurus Not Remotely True!!! Dolby Atmos is a Gimmick. The amount of homes that have a True Dolby Atmos Set-up like you suggest is less than 1%. Most people do not even have a Sound Bar they just use their TV speaker. Dolby Atmos Sound Bars are selling 1,000 times (Actually a lot more than that...) more than Dolby Atmos Surround Sound Systems. And they don't provide True Dolby Atmos. They are horrible actually. People don't want their living rooms to have the Ugly Set-up required for your Dolby Atmos System. Speakers on stands all around the seating is a Big No for 99% or more of homes. The people who actually do this are extremely rare. Women, wives and girlfriends are completely opposed to having all those Speakers. Not to mention they are opposed to the cost. So what happens is they compromise and buy a $200.00 to $400.00 Sound Bar system. Like I said, I spent thousands of dollars on my Dolby Atmos 7.1.2 System. You completely ignored my 1st comment. The Movies and TV I watch almost never use Dolby Atmos Speakers. There are many honest Profesionals in the AV community that admit most Films and Movies don't use Dolby Atmos. Only some movies and TV from the last 10 years used Dolby Atmos while filming. And most of them did a horrible job with Dolby Atmos. These honest AV professionals hear from people complaining daily about never hearing any Audio from their Dolby Atmos Speakers. People don't hear anything from their Atmos Speakers because what they are watching was not mixed in Dolby Atmos. Also, the Movies that use Dolby Atmos they still only use the specific Dolby Atmos Speakers at most 30% of the time. I still have all the equipment and Speakers I bought for Dolby Atmos. I just now have it Set-up for Surround Sound instead of Dolby Atmos. No I am Not impressed by Dolby Atmos. In the Movie Theater the Speakers are way too loud and the Dolby Atmos is very Fatiguing. I bought my Dolby Atmos Surround Sound System because I built 2 Movie Theater Rooms in my home. I became fed up with the horrible Audio and Video I paid too much for at the Movie Theaters. So I invested a whole lot of Money in Audio Video Systems for my Home Theaters. After discovering my Dolby Atmos Speakers almost never came on I switched off Dolby Atmos and set my Dolby Atmos Speakers to Surround Sound. In Surround Sound the Speakers are used a lot more than when I had them used for Dolby Atmos. I enjoy the Sound of Surround Sound much better than Dolby Atmos As do the Vast Majority of people who have zero desire to have Dolby Atmos in their homes. Countless people have sold off all their Dolby Atmos systems and went to a 2.1 system or a 5.1 system. These people are all over the internet telling their story. Streaming Companies do Not even offer True Dolby Atmos. They pretty much steam 5.1 Audio. Very few Movies Streamed actually have True Dolby Atmos. The only real Dolby Atmos is on Blu-ray. So, to experience True Dolby Atmos you have to buy the Movie. You act as if there was never Good Home Theater Audio before Dolby Atmos. That is a huge Lie. The Majority of Audio Video Profesionals do not even like Dolby Atmos. They make KZfaq videos and explain that it is a Huge Waste of Money to pay for Dolby Atmos especially when Normal Surround Sound Sounds better because more than 99% of what you will watch was Not made for Dolby Atmos.

@@JesusSavesSinners I'll just say you're completely off base here. Atmos is no gimmick. It's awesome. You just have so many with such poor setups they get bad performance. Are sound bar atmos and bouncing off the ceiling gimmicky, yeah but that's not a proper setup either. Done right.. Key word "right" it's awesome. If you need help with your setup join our Facebook page under the same name. Post pics of your setup and you'll get the needed help. Just because many many not care about having atmos doesn't make it a gimmick. I do over 100 designs a year and I'd say 1/3 of those are in living rooms and many times All speakers are hidden. If you're not comfortable with adding multiple speakers that's perfectly OK. Home theater as a hobby isn't for everyone. As For content, take netflix. It's getting to the point with new releases it's almost hard to find shows and movies that aren't in atmos and the mixes have gotten extremely good over the years as studios have gotten better at mixing in atmos. Those not in atmos can also be Upmixed.

@@hometheatergurus Wow you obviously just comment without reading what I have written. I told you repeatedly that I have all the Dolby Atmos Speakers. I paid thousands of dollars 💸 💵 💲 🤑 💰 for my Dolby Atmos Set-up. I hate Dolby Atmos. It is a Lie that it Sounds Awesome. In fact 99% of Movies and TV shows do not even use Dolby Atmos and when Atmos is used it is at maximum used in 30% of the Movie. Dolby Atmos is a Gimmick. It is just a way for manufacturers to sell more Speakers and more expensive AV Receivers. The actual market for Dolby Atmos is in Sound Bar Systems. Around 40% of all homes have a Sound Bar while less than 1% of homes have a Dolby Atmos Receiver and Dolby Atmos Speakers. The public is Not interested in buying true Dolby Atmos Systems. Dolby Atmos is a Gimmick.
