There could be infinitely many more podcasts dedicated to reloading and its seemingly countless talking points, but we did our best to cram some more advanced reloading knowledge into this 201 level reloading podcast with Mark, Jimmy, Paul Ness and in-house reloading guru Scott Parks. Ever wonder how ambient temperature can effect your load and its accuracy? Can having the highest possible BC bullet actually cause problems with your accuracy and consistency? Should reloaders choose a rifle first, then develop a cartridge around it, or is the opposite order of operations the best course of action? One of the most asked for episodes is finally here. If you haven't listened to our first episode as part of this "Mini series" yet, check out Reloading 101 for a basic introduction to the topic before Scott Parks infiltrates your brain with some serious knowledge in 201.

One other thing I have had to do to friends and family is be brutally honest with some of them who tell me they want to start handloading. Handloading is not for dummies and for people who get distracted easily. No radio or TV playing. Don't handload if you are lacking sleep or have a major issue on your mind. Great show as always!

I would love to know Scott’s list of powders he uses? Being able to stock a few brands that are temperature forgiving would be great.

I really enjoyed the discussion! I am a pretty confident 100 level reloader, looking to some of those advanced techniques to get more consistency, velocity, etc. Trying new bullets and powders is confusing and costly, so hearing different thoughts and theories and what to try or focus in on is very helpful.

Glad you enjoyed it! Go ahead a bit too if you want to hear more. We did a series of podcasts all around reloading where Mark and Jimmy actually tried it for themselves for the very first time. One episode in particular was very cool about developing and testing your loads. It's called "Experimenting with Explosives"

@@VortexNation the best was the last one where they said they would never reload again. Love the honesty. Part of their problem may have been that they were being told what to do and not really owning it. I’m completely self taught ( Manuel’s, talking to friends, and KZfaq) in the last year and have successfully reloaded 6.5 prc, 270 win, and 7rem mag all with sub moa ammunition. Shooting out to 1000 yards with my own ammo is very gratifying. EC tuner brake helps save components because I can cut out the seating depth stage. Next project is to take 338 win mag out 1000. I use all hunting bullets (Nosler ABLR) so I can use my long range loads for hunting. Every glass upgrade made on my guns have been Vortex. Started w a 6-24 Diamond Back tactile then got a Venom. Next up, Strike Eagle. Keep up the good work guys! Tuners might be a good topic for you boys.

Excellent discussion. Wish more people knew enough reloading 101 so they could understand r201. I have reloaded for 60 years and had a reloading business for 3 years and I Observe the basics and then change variables one step at a time and keep good notes. THANKS FOR A GOOD PODCAST.

I haven't reloaded in years. Back when, I was cutting .300 win mags, and 7mm mags down so I could form them into .350 Rem mags. Only now, due to your pod cast have I learned the relevance of anulling. Yes, I have lots of rounds loaded for my hunting guns. But now I have 3 new, so I have to get back into it. All about accuracy, not about saving money.

Flourescent lights effect electronic scales because of the high frequency off the ballast. Go to a a line voltage LED lamp and remove the ballast. Problem solved.

One important thing about handloading I have had to deal with is friends and family. First off, my policy is::::: I only handload for me and my wife. NOBODY ELSE, PERIOD! Something wrong happens, your going to be the first to blame. One day years ago, a landowner friend of mine had a grandson who just bought a 30)06 rifle. Wanted me to handload some ammo for it so he would have better accuracy. He had a bad habit about leaving ammo out in hot sun. BAD THING TO DO. I Told him twice, wouldn't listen. Did it a 3 rd time and I said, we are done. These loads were a bit stronger than factory. I pulled all my handloads and explained to my friend why.

Might be a small point, but if you do drop a sticky ball powder, wipe your hopper with a dryer sheet. It will reduce or eliminate static.

Great topic and information overload! You all look exhausted and I’ve never seen so many editing cuts on one of your podcasts. Maybe you got better at edits over time or maybe you’re better at avoiding them, or maybe it was just a bad day for a single take interview. It’s a topic that’s easy to get into the weeds. This is the oldest Vortex Nation Podcast I’ve listened to. You make great content! I’m not trying to criticize. I was just surprised to see an obvious edit, then I saw them frequently when your guest Scott was speaking. It made me wonder what was said that didn’t make the cut.

Really nice Podcast! Keep them coming Vortex! Have a question for Scott, in F class it's quit common to see heavy for caliber bullets been selected. Would you say that applies to PRS shooting as well? Light and fast vs heavy and slow! I am using 6.5x47 lapua currently for PRS like you did in the past and there is a wide range of bullet weights now days available. Matrix bullets for example has 6.5mm 162grain bullet! That is insane long and high BC bullet for 6.5mm. What is your experience on that? maybe you can give some advice regarding the 6.5x47. Appreciate your time!

To keep it short and sweet (so to speak) I have always shot 140-142 class bullets for the 6.5x47. This is just my preference. My best recommendation is to shoot whichever shoots the best for you and your gun. I don't care much about velocity because it's predictable. Wind numbers are what I'm trying to improve.

Partial full size is resizing for your rifles unique chamber and ur goal should be bumping the cartridges shoulder back 2 thousands Maybe 3

Thousands so your bolt closes fairly easily but ur controlling the amount the fired case grows as it fires = less trimming and more brass life.

Single base powders. Nitrocellulose double base niteocellulose and nitroglycerin. It is more unstable as it breaks down also than single base because of the nitroglycerin!

Great info! Quick question, I'm investigating developing a load in 6.5 creedmoor for moose. I would *like* to get to 2900 fps, but to do that I'd have to go beyond the max charge in the load data. Is there a way to do it safely?

Sometimes I have a hard time getting 2900 out of my 6.5 prc so my guess is that you would be way out safe pressures.

I don't agree about the anealing. I didn't aneal for years and after my velocitys went all haywire and my groeps opened up i went on a truth finding mission. Agter two years of struggling i found out the problem was anealing. Anealing goes a long way i.t.o consistent neck tention.

Very interesting podcast. If you do it correctly, and you use the correct rifle, you can shoot cast bullets reliably in a semi automatic rifle, with powder which would be considered very fast for use in a rifle. "Will this fit in my magazine?" Shoot a Ruger Number One. None of these guys did a good job of explaining Tangent and Secant ogives. "If you're reloading, you're kind of a tinkerer." Yep! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

The only thing factory ammo tells you is bullet weight and speed , they keep powder type , primers to there self. 🤔

Peep their reloading manuals - they'll give you all the information you need.

The manuals just say what’s usable. It doesn’t say what they are using. The may be mixing powders as far as we know.

Honestly not sure! He got back to us after the 'cast and it sounded like we got to his question the way we answered it here but you bring up another good point to talk about with different brands!

@@VortexNation Yes case brand does come into it. Consistency of brass thickness, the compound of the actual brass and even the accuracy of the flash hole. And if you want to complicate it even more Laupua brass for instance needs much longer time to anneal. Winchester brass would be my last choice btw.

I call bs on ball powder not flowing good. I have auto measures, and traditional and I'd give you my house if you could get a more consistent charge weight from extruded powder I own more ball powder than any other kind because it meters so much better through my machines. If you would decrease the relative humidity in there, you wouldn't have hardly any problems with static, it travels through the moisture in the air. Less moisture less static

308 is just better? 🤣 no. for putting down animals? sure. marginally. but you can't get the same flatness with 308 that you do 7-08. flatness and BC matter most for elr.

You have a 7-08? I am going back and forth on that, 7mm RemMG. Or maybe jumping down to 6.5 prc. How u like yours,?

@@freeandcriticalthinker4431 7 just works. be it 08 or rem mag. in the end you can make anything work. but by the numbers, 7mm Trumps 308. only thing 308 does marginally better on is weight and therefore might be a bit better at taking down big game but even that's debatable. shot placement is everything and you can't argue with 7mm ballistics and flatness

Not true on 6.5 prc. 25-06 does not have very good bc bullets for any kind of long range

Could be good but the “expert” can’t talk loud consistently, he does that bs millennial thing where they start out talking loud then get really quiet and talk under their breath. Gave up, had to turn volume up and down every time he tried to squeeze a sentence out. Hope his velocities are more consistent than his volume of speech.
