In today’s episode Al wears a sweatshirt while the other guys are dying in the heat. Jason and Ben deal with the June drought on the Homestead.
Al’s first ever tornado warning. Ben continues to wait for parts for his mini split while the heat wave heats up. Jason shares that he sold two Kune kune piglets.
The guys talk about pig breeding schedules.
Jason shares about a new side project to help prevent break-ins. He prepares to leave for Iowa. He is still working on his PowerPoint and talk for the event. He’s been busy getting the farm ready to leave for the event.
Al braves the heat this week and gets the waterlines done. Ben tells a story of building a waterfall with boulders and it reminds Jason and Al of similar stories from their past.
Ben weighs in on all his produce harvest. He is stoked with the results. He has his pigs in the forest on a single wire. He Smoked a delicious rack of ribs this last week.

Great day to see the 3 BEST FAMILIES. A POLICE❤ OFFICER WAS SHOT. HIS FUNERAL IS TODAY. 1/2 MILE FROM ME AT MY CHURCH. HE WAS 30 Y/O. HIS Wife is pregnant#4. Please pray for this family. And the 18y/o Guy arrested. GOD BLESS YOU. JASON, You will do a great job Sunday morning. My dad went to a gravel pit in the 70s, and picked up heavy rocks for the rock garden. Rock on🎉 ❤❤❤. I have a rock story!! One time when I had a really big freshwater fish tank, I went to a local county park into the stream to collect all kinds of rocks & a few pieces of driftwood for my tank! I took 2 reusable shopping bags, and I came walking out of the woods after getting turned around, barely able to walk anymore, when I realized I was definitely in the wrong place! I had emerged in someone's backyard in a neighborhood cul-de-sac! This lady was hand washing her van in the driveway when I came from around her house. I was dirty and sweaty & absolutely exhausted. I could barely put words together. She ran inside and got her husband. She probably thought I was some sort of mad woman that was about to beat her with these rocks! She might have thought I needed an EMT! I'm surprised she didn't call the squad, REALLY. Luckily her husband was willing to drive me to the correct parking lot. Later, there were signs telling people to leave the river "habitats" as is, prohibiting guests from removing such things! That was a killer tank, though! I sold it for a great price a couple years later! This was when I was in an apartment and it was my only connection to wildlife.

Speaking of picking up rocks, when I lived in NorCal, in the winter I’d go out to Folsom Lake, let my dog run around and pick up river rock for edging my garden beds!

I think this is become my favorite podcast/KZfaq channel to listen to while I’m milking goats in the barn. I learned so many things! A 55 pound turkey, I would have ground up that meat and made some really great turkey burgers. 🍔 🦃

Here's my rock story. I live in the city. We had a 200lb big rock out front amid some yucca and pride of Barbados plants and one night someone stole it. A 200 lb rock. Really made me mad.

Yes Ben here in Cincinnati which is normally cooler that your area and less humidity thismorning it's starting off at 6:30 AM 80 degrees with little to no wind + 77 % humidity. I too like to get the chores done between 5:30 and 9 and then head for a cooler place. Kudos to you all for the work is never ending but the pleasure of working your own place and your own plan is very rewarding. Enjoy each of you all tallented in different ways so thanks for a full YEAR of sharing it is meaningful to this Old Guy.

Al, I work at a garden center, central NC, flat land. Every time I see you dig up rocks or see your pile of rocks, I wish you were closer to us, lol. We generally carry three sizes of boulders that we go hand pick out and buy from the Western part of NC by the 18 wheeler load. They sell for approximately $150.00, $270.00 to $350.00 depending on the size. They look great in landscaping and waterfalls. You should work something out to sell those things!

My ROCK story is when we lived in Orange county,Ca. they built a track of homes in Anaheim hills, five of the homes pricer at over a million dollars each ( late 70s ). One home was built around a very large boulder, the boulder was in the home !

We have bears in Clemson, SC. Hit the bird feeders on a regular basis. Had a bear on my deck a few summers ago. They seldom give out hunting permits for bear. Lots of deer and coyotes and other critters too. They’ve learned to live near people and take advantage of gardens, etc..

Al, sounds like you experienced a downburst. A cold rain induced column collapses . The winds spread out along the ground with the destroyed trees/vegetation layed out in straight lines. A tornadic event will have twisted trees/vegatation, usually the tops are evidence of the s[pinning effects.

Strike plates that are heavy duty are cool, but definitely remind people that they're only as good as where you install it. You've got to have a nice thick or hardwood style wood jamb or put it into metal frames, right? If you try to pop open a door and the door frame is flimsy, that strike plate with its sunken screws will stay with the door handle or deadbolt assembly will all come flying open with the door, from what I've seen. So jealous that you'll be in Iowa! I really wanted to go and meet everyone. Especially You, Jessica and Charles Dowding! All in good time! I'd be a crying fan girl mess 😂 just like I was in Virginia at the Homesteaders of America Conference.

Our rock story! My friend has a friend at work that has a creek running through his property! He told my husband that we could have all we wanted! We borrowed our friends F150 and filled the bed with flat stacked rocks! It made a nice little border to the garden around our house! Many old properties have them and are very old! Happy Independence Day to you all! 🇺🇸

Thanks for sharing your stories....I love the one about stealing the boulders. LOL. That would never happen at Al's place. Everyone has as many as he does. In my part of Va. we have had the driest June since they have been keep records of such things. I hope it will be better in July like Ben said it is in NC. Good luck with your talk in Iowa, Jason. We planted a raised bed vegetable garden, which has become a deer buffet, despite our efforts to deter them.

We ended up with a hodge podge collection of 6' tall dog kennel fencing and our little planting space sits behind chain link. We did make runs narrow enough and backed up to a tree line so they haven't tempted to jump the chain link. I also run my hand along the chain link at nose height every so often.

As a young kid, I took apart a stone wall that had stood since colonial days. My parents had to pay to have the stone wall rebuilt.

I new some guy in northern ca. That use to go out in the country and take/steal large rocks and moss rocks. And use them in landscaping.

Al, I raised Mr. Turkey til he was 58 pounds dressed out. I didn't use a sawzall, but had to take his back apart to put in oven. I still have have part of that turkey canned.

Years ago when I lived in southern NJ I was driving home past the city park, when I saw an elderly couple had backed up the caddie sedan and were taking the rocks from the drainage pipe to the lake. In broad day light!!

Al, Gina could use some of the rocks to make flower gardens. Yeah I know another project. But does it really ever end on the homestead. Jason, I'm sure you did well at the show. I remember always talking with folks and everyone saying remember when this or that used to taste so good? We have learned why. Growing our own is very humbling compared to modern day. I moved from Minnesota to Arizona in 99. Minnesota is known for its iron mines. In Arizona they were getting hundreds of dollars for rocks. Back up north we would push them into piles and if they were too big to move we would paint them and plant flowers around them. Most homes had more than one "flower" rocks.

Enjoyed your talk. The city decided that I had to have a sidewalk after thirty years tore down my stone wall. Had to get rid of them myself as I couldn't lift them. Put a ad in the paper it was amazing the people wanting them.

You joke about people moving out of the cities and the wildlife moving in but I am a born and raised city girl and the wildlife (deer, coyote) started moving in starting in the late 90's when people were clearing the land and building homes. I remember telling my friends that people built housing developments and the deer/coyote moved to the hood. We also have the occasional bear/s and now we have Eagles nesting in the county. Luv your podcasts.

We have bears here in Central Michigan. My neighbor lady feeds the bird and has many feeders 😮the bears come up regularly and eat. They destroy her poles to the point she has to take the feeders down each evening. She can keep them over her way lol
