We as Mainers need to vote people into office that give our Fishermen and women a Voice. And none of the ones we have now are giving them that Voice. Vote them out and put someone in there that will Help this Industry.

Two solutions to two problems. You fish WAY too many traps. In Canada people fish between 450 and 250 pots and do well. 800 pots is absurd! Cut that in half and you reduce rope by 50%. An other benefit is you will need way less bait and have much lower operating costs. No Brainer!

Glad it seems like a no brainer to you. Guys here will probably take you up on that right around the time when Canada puts in size restrictions or zero-tolerance protections for breeding females. And so goes the usual argument, you are convinced of the value of short seasons with less traps & pulling every last thing out of the water during that window. We tend to be convinced that robust conservation measures allow for a well-managed year-round fishery with plenty of traps. When it comes down to it, both the US and Canada have had very successful fisheries with these very different models. Both probably have their pros and cons, what you've done has worked for you, I admit. But what we've done has also been quite successful, and were it not for the arbitrary encroachment of our ruling class, I think it would only be even more successful. The real issue we have is not amount of rope in the water. With everything in the water, no one's killed a right whale here, yet that's the stated impetus for these new regs. Our guys have reduced everything as much as they reasonably can, but at this point, the feds have made it clear that there is no single concession that we can make that will placate them, short of banning all traditional lobster gear. And even the bait price crisis is somewhat artificially created - we're up to our eyeballs in menhaden, but not allowed to harvest the vast majority of them because of a very bogus quota allotment, designed by the same masterminds of the current NARW narrative. At least in Canada, it doesn't seem like your government is hell-bent on wrecking your fishery, so that's for sure one way I'd like to see our gov learn from yours.
