Your teaching is so clearly explained....and I soooo loved it when you walked us through the staccato exercise and the encouragement you gave even without hearing us...you are so funny and such an easy personality. So I've been singing quietly at home with my guitar for something like 20 years, just for my own enjoyment. All I've ever had is a straight tone, which sounded bland and unmusical to my ears, so i have never sang in front of anyone. Well holy crap now I have the beginnings of vibrato and my voice is beginning to sound more musical and pleasant. Thank you!

When I first started singing I couldn't add vibrato in my notes at all and about two years of working on it I can finally add a nice steady vibrato. I use all of the types of vibrato that he mentioned. But I mostly rely on my vocal chords to do the work. My advice is just to practice if you're a beginner. It will come more natural the more you practice the better your vibrato will get.
@justinmetcalfe9948
@justinmetcalfe9948 8 жыл бұрын
***** i was practicing at least every other day. after about a month I could add it to my low notes but not to my belted notes but I can now say that I can add vibrato all the way up to my belted B5

Thank you so much, this is exactly the kind of thing I needed. I have an okay vibrato, but I want to go a lot further with it, and it was just as I thought - I sometimes have trouble engaging it for reasons described in this video. It was also nice to pick up a new exercise, because I thought I'd seen all there is for the elements of a good vibrato.

Every once in a while I can do a vocal cord vibrato like you show in this video, but it is always the slow one you showed. Nothing I seem to do speeds it up. It's very frustrating, but I am going to keep at it. I had quite a few years of voice coaching when I was in private school growing up, it unfortunately wasn't one on one, it was the whole class together, so still better than none and I can sing pretty well.(I think :D) Unfortunately we never really got into vibrato, and this was in grade school (K-8) and so obviously my voice has since changed. (I just turned 30..ahhh) I still really enjoy singing but I'm just missing the vibrato and it drives me crazy lol. Thanks for your videos though Justin, they are awesome and a big help.

this is a great video! tbh, i listen to a lot of broadway songs, such as those from the soundtrack of les miserables and miss saigon. and i've noticed that lea salonga, the disney legend, has one of the best vibratos i've ever heard in female singers. i have a vibrato, but it literally is just me shaking my on my diaphragm the entire time, and it's weird lol. unfortunately, my voice is naturally raspy and more deep than miss salonga's, but i've always wanted to learn her vibrato technique. this is the best video i've seen so far, which would help me towards getting a nicer sounding vibrato. thank you so much!

2:15 - that must be why we feel vibrato biologically as a motion, even though the amplitude itself doesn't necessarily change. The cords contract and elongate like a slinky to form an undulating pitch!

This is a definite weak point, and I'm wondering if each he starts from the breath/stomach, or is strictly from the vocal folds. Any tips on getting a faster staccato? Hi Justin, this is amazing stuff and thank you so much. Have been doing your exercises and I just have a question about vibrato.... What I have found I am doing is oscillating down a whole semitone from the note I am singing and then back up, rather than oscillating a little bit above and a little bit below the note I am singing. I am struggling to change this action - can you help with any pointers about that? Tsanks so much again, Jacob - Byron Bay, Australia

Hi Justin.Im from poland. I'm a big fan of Bon Jovi.and my question is. how Jon Bon Jovi lose his voice over the years. Way he sound in 80' and early 90' compare to today is like totaly diffrent person. And i know from his interview. he was practice bel canto. he had vocal teacher. So what go wrong with his voice, and how people can avoid such a vocal change.

Great video! By the way, you look like a blend of younger Dicaprio and Dane Dehann... It's uncanny

I think I've invented a third type of vibrato: hybrid. Basically I start of with a pitch bend and then pulsate my breath but not by using my stomach but rather by using my vocal chord. (I recorded myself in slomo an no, there's little to no pitch bend after the initial note and no, my stomach doesn't move)

Cool! Different vibrato types can be combined to create hybrids. Just keep in mind that the vocal folds cannot pulsate breath. And you don't need your abs necessarily to pulsate the breath. Congrats on your discoveries! -NYVC

Dear Justin I think your videos are really helpful but not what im looking for. I have developed vibrato but I want to know how to fast pitch change like ariana grande, meghan trainor, jason derulo. And also the jaw vibrato like Ariana. Please if you could do a video about it, it be very helpful.

Is a fast vibrato a bad sign? I have naturally developed (without any voice lessons) quite a tremolo-like vibrato (it doesn't come forced, I really can't control it much). Some people have said that they really like it, I myself am trying to train myself to have a slower vibrato, but it is quite hard for me.
