This month, I’m doing something different. I have four special guests, my kids, and I’ll share their interviews with you each week.
To start things off, today’s guest is my firstborn child, Hannah, who will be turning 30 this month! Hannah was born in Papillion, Nebraska, on December 10, 1993, in my third year of medical school. Later, we moved to Oklahoma, where I did my residency, and when she was around five, her mom and I divorced.
Going into the interview, Hannah told me that no questions were off the table, and we had an open conversation on everything from her earliest childhood memories to her divorce and weight loss journey.
One of the things I’ve realized as a parent is that if you can raise your kids without injecting your pathologies into them, you've done a good job. Enjoy the episode!
Episode Highlights:
- Hannah’s earliest memories, including my divorce from her mom and memories of living in different houses
- Moving from Oklahoma to Arizona
- Hannah's emo phase and her identification as a "shadow child"
- Our experiences with drugs and music
- The need for euphoric experiences and how Hannah managed to avoid addiction
- Hannah’s decision to get divorced and how she managed the process
- Hannah’s thoughts on approaching her thirties and why age doesn't hold much significance for her
- The decision to have an abortion and Hannah’s reluctance to undergo a medical procedure
- Considering parenthood and lifestyle
- Hannah explains her shift in perspective on liberal values and personal protection
- Why your perspective on taxes change as your financial situation changes
- How Hannah’s weight loss journey has positively impacted her mental health and overall wellbeing
- Our views on the current state of the country and politics
- Parenting and self-reflection

As a divorced mom of three adults (34,31 and 26) I too never thought I would get divorced, and when you said "I hope I haven't Effed you up too much" it really hit home, Dr. Tassone. I stayed in a bad marriage too long FOR them, and now it's something I struggle with all the time, that they are afraid of relationships because of our divorce. It can feel like a no-win sometimes...I think your daughter is just fine and she's got a great head on her shoulders! Beautiful inside and out. You get an A+ from me! It's my daughter I worry about the most, because their father has zero respect for women and she has that "Daddy hunger" and keeps dating jerks just like him. Right now she's afraid to even try to meet someone, and she's only 26. We do the best we can and love them unconditionally. When my first baby was born, Christmas night 1989, I found a vintage painting for his nursery that said "Children are not things to be molded, but people to be unfolded" .Three children, three totally different personalities. Thank you for this brilliant idea of interviewing your children. They will always have these to reflect upon! Well done...

I'm 56-years-old (divorced), former Mormon, my oldest is 30ish (daughter) who lives in AZ and doesn't want kids. She leans left while I lean right. Total emo in all black during high school. I felt like I was looking in the mirror watching this video. Thank you for sharing.

Really nice to listen to you both. Great to hear your daughter’s perspective, and how it was for you as a parent. Such a nice relationship.

As a woman who went to a liberal college and had more than one abortion (45 years ago!!) I was hoping to hear more about the health challenges faced by young women today - birth control, OTC abortion pills, etc. It was overwhelming way back when, and it must be even more confusing today? That said, I totally transitioned from Liberal to Conservative as I grew older, but now I'm just me 🙂

I used to think other women’s abortions were none of my business, but then I learned that we are all responsible for the safety of babies in our community.

I'm adopted so my views on abortion shouldn't be as they are. I believe in choice. It's none of my business what other women choose in their lives. I, like Hannah, used to be liberal more moderate than left leaning. As I get older I become more right but I have to say that both parties suck these days and I'm of the mind to not vote. No moderates exist anymore.

I wonder how you view Trump after the first debate between him and Biden is now just a week or so old. Trump doesn't seem to be the psycho anymore.
