I might have mentioned in the past that I looooove your boat. Its like a little floating village,....with its village center ( cockpit), community hall with pub and restaurant ( salon), community houses (fore and aft cabins), the way and fields (fordeck), the local garage/mens shed (under the cockpit seat and engine room), the village green that no one seems to go to (poop deck), and then there is the wonderfull ever changing country side. And the people,... so typically British. I just love it.

Rigging (and any fitting made of stainless) always goes first where it is buried. Goes by different names, but the basis is wherever stainless is covered up, that is where it corrodes. Take out all your chain plates that pass thru the deck, and any bolts as well, will find the corrosion can eat right through the centre while the exposed ends look perfect. Well worth the effort every two years to pull everything out, polish and rebed if they're clean, replace at the first hint of cracks. Use a magnifying glass, if you can find any hint of a crack, toss it. Bolts and even chain plates are cheap, snapped rig is not. While you're at it, go up and bang on the spreaders and examine the tips, please, next most common rig failure.

Great video as ever. Your channel is the only channel we've found that gives an accurate representation of what it's like to live on a sailboat. Also, we've been contemplating whether to cut inspection hatches so we can see our chain plates and you've just convinced us to do it!

You guys are an inspiration. I would love to sell up and take my wife on a RTW yacht trip before my current injuries prevent it. Your videos show it how it is...good and trying times alike. I love the way you both cope with calmness and just take everything in your stride. Weevils...yuck....but remember...they make good drinking partners...weevils wobble but they dont fall down! (I'll get my coat). Keep up the great vids guys!

My understanding of the charts is that at charted anchorages, you do not have to have an anchor light on. It does not mean that you are not allowed to anchor where there isn't an anchor symbol. Cheers, Richard

I'm running Navionics Boating v13.3 on my iPad and it has Active Captain built in as of December '18. You may need to do an upgrade (which was free for me) through the App Store. It shows the anchorage just off Patriots Point in Charleston.

Hey there, just watched you latest vlog & wanted to share tip for you for all your dry goods aboard. Just place good old fashioned Bay leaves in all you dry goods & you will never ever have weevils in any. We have been living aboard now for 5 yes traveling the world & have used this method ... I know my mum used this at home.in Australia, so I have continued the practice. Cheers from the Aussies #sailingtheplanet.

Just love following your adventures! You always give us a great video, full of good old fashioned `niceness`. Personally, I really enjoy the feel good factor that comes across even when things are a bit challenging. It`s easy to see that you are a very together couple, and truly loving your lives on the ocean. When my boat is a reality, I hope it`s like this.. I won`t mind if there`s less boat maintenance though, you`ve had more than your fair share! All the best from the dreary boredom of the UK.. :-)

Great episode! Weevils are a challenge and paper bagged flour from certain regions will always contain them - decant into plastic bags/containers to prevent them spreading - it's your shout as to whether you eat contaminated produce - we would bin, although there are some good tips below for dealing with them. Engine: that union could be adapted and replicated with a silicone hose union and straight pipe in either copper or stainless - might be worth investigating - for some reason I never see silicone hoses on boats. Navigation: we have open CPM as the charts are cheaper and very detailed, they make a great backup/reference - those ships will more than likely be using it. Air draft: don't forget the VHF aerial and other items mounted at the top of the mast, manufacturers specifications are sometimes very tight on tolerance, a strike can be catastrophic.... and the marina looked very expensive!

Really enjoy the channel. Not to tell another Captain his business but what was the reason you left Charleston with a broken chain plate fitting on the deck? I’ve put into Charleston many times and they have several fine machine shops there that could’ve easily fabricated both a new chainplate and the iron exhaust cooling fitting for your main engine . And I agree with your wife that Charleston is a lovely city. It’s always a mandatory stop when we’re cruising the east coast. By the way, your sail plan of using two headsails is brilliant. Unfortunately we only have the one sail track on our furler. s/v GAME PLAN Mt. Hartman Bay, Grenada

Great episode, maybe I’ll spot you guys heading south if you going down the intercoastal by Wilmington NC. I had better luck with aqua maps cause it has the active captain overlay and I used the active captain all the way down for anchoring had no issues heading to the keys down the intercoastal. Have fun on the next leg of your journeys. Cheers

Re: weevils - if you have access to a microwave then you can microwave the flour and it will kill the weevil eggs before they hatch - and will kill any live weevils that may have hatched. On another topic - for Nicki - you can buy prescription glasses online at www.zennioptical.com for between $7 and $40 for single vision, that is frames with lenses, with very low prices for add-ons like anti-glare, and shipping is $4.95 to any location in the U.S. It takes about two weeks for the order to arrive after placement. I am not affiliated with them but I have ordered them for family members and the quality always comes out good. You need to know your prescription and your PD (pupil distance - which you can measure your self). It is a good source for a spare pair, and also prescription sunglassses, which you can order with polarized lenses that allow you to see through glare coming off of water, making it much easier to see below the surface. I have heard some opticians make negative comments about the quality but I have ordered at least ten pair over the last few years for various family members and they are all happy campers, especially about the price. Sorry but I just saw the tip below by Right Brainstuff, about using bay leaves to keep the weevils out and I think that is the way to go versus microwaving, which may not be convenient or available on your boat.

Charleston is a truly great place and a bit of the old south. As a general rule if the chart does not say "Do not anchor", you are good to go in the US. Some areas do have limits for how long you can stay anchored so keep an eye out for signs indicating that. Enjoy the U.S., how far north are you planning to go?
