I am a newby and enjoy your tutorials. I keep reading about preparing the canvas by using gesso and by covering the white on the canvas with burnt umber and other colors. I would love your input. Thank you!

Hi there! I paint on either canvas boards or boxed canvases which are actually already pre-primed and ready to go. If you were stretching your own canvas you would use a primer, some artists don't like the way the paint soaks in to even primed canvas so they will add another layer, I almost always do a background layer so I don't use any additional primers. Artists use under colors kinda like a colored photo lens, it gives the whole painting an undertone, but I tend to paint pretty opaque so have never used that method, if I were doing say, a fall scene where I wanted some transparency in the paints, that would be appropriate. But remember, it's an art not a science! So you can play with things and see what works for you (: Thanks for being here!
