EP11: Sindhudurg Killa | Sindhudurg Fort Complete Information | Kokan Coastal Solo Road Trip
Sindhudurg fort is Janjira in Malvan, the base of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's army. Maharaja had 362 forts. All these forts extended to the country of Bijapur in the east, Hubli in the south, Arabian Sea in the west and Khandesh-Varhad in the north. Along with Bhuikot and Dongri forts, Shivaji Maharaj built sea forts realizing that the formation of Jaldurga was important for repelling the raids of enemies on the sea route. The beach was scouted looking for good, solid and safe spots.
A.D. In 1664, an island called Kurte near Malvan with black rounded rocks was selected for the fort. The foundations of the forts were laid by the hands of the Maharaja. Today this place is famous as Moray's Stone. Maharaja worshiped at that place by carving Ganesha idol, sun image on one side and moon image on the other. It is said that one crore hon was spent to build the fort. Construction took three years. The four Koli people who found a suitable place to build Sindhudurg were rewarded with villages. Sindhudurg, a fort of historical beauty, has stood on the Kurta rock for three centuries, a pure timeless rock, about half a mile offshore from Malvan. The area covered by sea on this reef is about 48 acres. Its coastline is 2 miles. The embankment is 30 feet high and 12 feet wide. There are a total of 22 strong bastions scattered along the coast. There is a sharp rock around the tower. To the west and south is the Abyssal Sea. 500 blocks of lead are laid in the foundation of the embankment on the west and south sides and the construction of this embankment cost 80 thousand hon.
Sindhudurg fort has imprints of Shiva's right hand and left foot. In the book written by Chitragupta during Shiva's time, the following text is mentioned: Mandan, Shree Tulsi Vrindavan, jewel of the state. The fifteenth jewel of the Chaturdash Maharatna, was received by the Maharaja.
