I wanted to test something different but...failed. So, here I go on my journey with an empty battery and see how the fuel economy is when the car is not been charged at all.
I compared the efficiency to the 2L petrol Outlander:

Made 264km on motorways over the Swiss Alps. Started with empty battery. Then loaded full. Made 42 km on motorways with 120 kmh average. Then up to the Gothard tunnel to Lugano. Put 15L petrol at the end. Average consumption 4.9L/100km. Great car. silent, comfortable, spacious.

@@Charlieczek I had 54km on display in the morning and I think I'm the city you can reach this. My drive was all motorway, at around 120kmh and over the alps. The car is silent, and a practical allrounder family car.

Hey Andy thanks for all your informative videos, I have really enjoyed watching them. Unfortunately where we are living in Lithuania I have decided it is just not feasible to buy a PHEV due to lack of charging points. Ive just bought a 2012 Mazda CX5, obviously not my ideal green car but pretty good fuel economy. Keep up the good work. All the best Graham.

Thank you very much for your feedback, Graham. Must be a similar situation as here in Australia where we don't have enough charging stations either. I charge mostly at home anyway (95%) and drive the car as a hybrid when no plug is available. All the best and thanks for watching.

That was a great test Andy, thank you. So we can see there is not much savings using Hybrid Mode while doing highway speeds. Where Hybrid Mode does better is during city driving. I hope to test this later this winter when the Engine needs to run to keep me warm.

If you don't plugin this car, there is absolutely now saving at all. The opposite in fact; the fuel economy is worse than in a normal Outlander and on top the car is far more expensive to buy.

this is not true - the normal gasoline Outlander AWD V6 is using 10-11l/100km. You can't compare to diesel as diesel will do much worse on short distances in the city. You need to compare gas to gas and similar power engine.

Andreas, you are comparing to 4 cylinder 2WD with manual transmission. I'm comparing to AWD V6 with automatic transmission which is rated at 22MPG by EPA www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=39688 . You need to compare apple to apple not to orange.

But you said I need to compare it with the same class of motor. Now you want me to compare the 2L PHEV engine with a V6?! I compared a 2.0L engine with another 2.0L engine for the same vehicle to make it fair and equal. You need to get your apples right, mate :D

Well, I went and did it. The US doesn't get the bigger battery and motor for the 2019 MY, so I just plunked down for a 2018 GT. I've taken one for a test drive and it's eerie quiet and seemed to go quite well. I will be looking for all the gadgets, gizmos and suggestions on what to do/set up with the PHEV, thus wiping out any actual savings from driving in EV mode... I hope to get the car this Saturday. Wish me luck.

A bought a 2019 GT a few months ago. So far I am happy with if not counting some random creaks coming seemingly from the center console. What do you think about your car 2 years later?

@@unitedwestand56 I traded the car back in March when I left NY. Other than the BMS issue I mostly liked it. No odd creaks that I remember but some really annoying design decisions.

I keep reading about this battery degradation issue, but based on my own short term experience with this vehicle over the last several months I haven't noticed any difference in my electric range. So far I had around 60 charges. I have to agree with you on interior ergonomics - most of the dashboard design is not very intuitive to use. In any case, be well and take care.

Great Video - I'm getting 50-55 miles of range per charge on my 2023 could not be happier - by the way PHEV Watchdog does not work on 23 models any ideas of another source? I'm using Car Scanner for now it gives me engine RPM, Temperature, HV Batt , 12 volt batt, etc. Mike

Well if you're not gonna plug it in, get a normal hybrid car, I'm sure they are better suited for this application! This is really meant to be plugged in! It's the difference between 0 and 8l/100 km XD

Agree. It seems like he is using that vehicle as it is a pure electronic car. It is a only 12 kw battery, instead of a 60 kw one in Tesla. 110 eps. It is amazing.

yes, expecting that PHEV will behave like Tesla or Leaf is a big misunderstanding. This is a big SUV with a small battery that allow for short city drivings in EV mode.

I agree 100%. The PHEV is not a BEV. I'm using it for short commuting on pure EV and longer hybrid drives as designed.

Don't recommend anyone buying this vehicle.. mine is suffering from serious battery degradation and its only a year old. The local dealer doesn't want to know anything about it.

accelerating and then charging batteries while coasting (engine braking) and use that electricity to run the engine its less economic than just using fuel to run the wheels and letting it coast longer to a stop. Hybrids that aren't plug in make no sense as they are less efficient than just petrol/

Well, not quite. You can recharge the battery when the engine runs on higher speeds and use the battery power in slower areas where the motors are far more efficient than an ICE.

Not true. The fuel consumption of 5l/100 km with 190 ps car with weight of 2 tons is great. Not possible without a hybrid. Talking about 2020 Honda CR-V hybrid.Outlander in test now.

Hey Andy quick question for you. If you could go back in time would you lease this vehicle instead of buying it? I feel like in 3-4 years the technology is going to be even better and it would pay to wait a little longer before purchasing. Also, are you still having the battery degradation issues?

With the knowledge about the car I have now, I would not buy it again. I would lease a different EV or PHEV then. The service provided by Mitsubishi is just too bad. They don't really seem to care at all. World wide phenomenon.

Thanks Chris. It will be a long fight. Definitely go with the Kia. My wife has got the Kia and it is awesome. The customer service from them seems a lot better too.

Optima is completely different car - it's a car not AWD SUV. Also the fact that Kia users don't have Wtchdog to monitor battery doesn't mean that Kia don't have similar issues.

Andrzej P Yeah, I’ve stuck between getting an suv PHEV and a sedan style PHEV. I hate the rear end of the Honda clarity and the trunk space on the Ford Fusion energi is a joke. I had narrowed it down between the Optima and outlander. I haven’t seen any videos on the Optima talking about battery degradation or really any gripes. My biggest problem is there aren’t any with the technology package here in Saint Louis.

I got my 2018 GT two days ago. I noticed that it’s only showing 8 amps when charging. My socket and and breaker are 15 amps. Any idea?

The EVSE delivers only 8A to the car with newer models. Earlier models had the 10A EVSE with a 15A plug with the car (needed always this frickin' 15A Outlet to charge), nowadays the EVSE is 8A and comes with a 10A plug for every standard power outlet.

Ah, you've got one of these with the selector switch. Cool, It's like my switchable EVSE. I usually charge on 6A only over time. Just when I haven't got time I crank it up to 15A.

It's a lot lower than the cost of the fuel to drive a similar distance providing your car gives you decent range and you drive it with a bit of forethought, e.g. not using the air conditioning and air-heating system too much as they eat up the battery p[ower.

I was curious to buy a newer Outlander and convert it to a "normal" hybrid. Do you think it would be possible to remove a few battery modules to reduce some weight? And use it as a normal hybrid without plugging it in? I've seen a few people who added some battery modules. But nobody removed them actually. Thanks for your videos

@@brandoncarr441 Hi, I just found out that is possible to add a few more battery modules to extend an electric range. But probably by reducing modules I would lose some voltage and whole system wouldn’t work. I couldn’t find any more info about this. But Outlander would be great as normal hybrid😍

I wonder if most PHEVs work like this? In particular how the new Ford Transit Van PHEV 1L engine will work if you never plug it in? It would be awesome if they had a manual switch for not using battery.

@@12vLife 2 years after you posted.... but from my research on Outlander PHEVs there is a 'save' switch which does exactly that.... save the battery for when you want it i.e. if you are camping as you say, or just wanting to save ability to run in pure EV mode when you hit traffic after driving on the highway. It's a very nice feature to have and well thought out by the designers!

Hard to tell, batteries have rest times and SoC changes. If the battery is very small, like in the PHEV, the km you lose or gain can be significant.

I’m confused by what you’re recommending. You called the video ‘NEVER plug-in your PHEV’ but then you tell us we should charge it sometimes. You say the cost of driving was 8 liters per 100kms but that’s terrible! I am considering changing to a hybrid SUV from my 2.0 litre diesel Astra and I can get way better than that. I’m looking to reduce my overall driving costs but it seems the Outlander PHEV is not a good idea after all. Just when I was almost convinced this was the car I was going to buy too!

These days you don't buy a hybrid or plug-in hybrid any more, you buy full electric. Test drive one for a day and you will love it.

@@unpluggedEV That's easy to say if you live in a house with a carport or garage. If you live in a flat it is not easy or practical to install a charging port and hence a full electric car is not an option. They are great yes but they are simply off the plan so enough said!

No charging??? Sure you got bad flu due to this freezing +5C that morning and you are hallucinating! :P Ps. I don't fully agree with the statement of lack of efficiency. You need to compare it with a similar sized, petrol driven SUV. I guarantee you that they will never see 8 l/100 and I was able to keep it as low as 7.1 l/100km in my model. You need to make a test with the charge button as well :)

Hahaha, it was pretty cold :D I compared it with the 2L petrol version of the Outlander PHEV which is rated with 7L/100km as per below link. Don't forget, this test result was for this particular trip. Longer trips or different speeds could end in different results of course. I was going pretty slow due to the construction work and still the vehicle wasn't that great and efficient. same here I constantly get 7.1 l/100km on long highway trips without plug-in and will full load. I would say it's quite good for the car size. Of course for the daily commute in town, I'm using 100% electric, so my lifetime average is ~60MPG - unmatched by any hybrid car.

If you are relying on the dash numbers to measure the consumption which was on your car 7.1l/100 so it is not accurate

What is the car mileage to lost over 20% capacity? 9/100 is not average! It is tooooooooooooo high! For a hybride I expect 3, not 9, and you did not drove with 150 km/h. 9 is ok if you drive with 150, but with 90 it should be 3-4.
