Do I need to feed my corals? This is a highly debated topic in the hobby and today, Ryan elevates the conversation by breaking down how corals could benefit from feeding and ways we plan to address that in the BRS/WWC System.

When it comes to feeding coral i try to mix it up as you said. Make my own fish food using a meat grinder and liquid vitamins, feed phyto every night. Dose fuel, potassium, iron and acropower weekly. NO3 and PO4 dosing with potassium nitrate and mono potassium phosphate (save a ton of money) but with all that I found having a high quality skimmer was a must to keep everything in check. Thanks for making the longer videos.

Ryan, you do an excellent job from an evaluation of what can be done, why and how. But like I said, I’d love to see more info come from bringing in info from the wild and incorporating what we can into the artificial environment for our pets.

When scuba diving you can see clearly, especially in things like scroll corals and cup corals , lots of small fish live on and around and in the coral homes and the primary nutrition is obviously fish waste. Those corals are often quite large and deep and flow within the cup is markedly more stagnant than the flow around them making live zooplankton and microscopic organisms less likely to be settled and captured. These corals get more of their nutrients from the fish like gobies: neon gobies and babies of wrasses like yellow coris wrasses. For most of this, you need to understand that different corals also have different feeding strategies and access to different levels of flow and light in nature. Another good example from diving is gorgonians. More often than not, they grow in forests, often in areas of valleys in coral areas where the current through them is greater and the amount of zooplankton that is rushing by them is in large constant amounts. Acan, blastos and a number of other LPS also have good large colonies of small fish on, around and in them. There likely in the aquarium multiple types of corals, from which in nature they don’t all prefer and feed the same on the same types of foods.

I make my own food blend. Took me a while to get my consistency correct, when i am doing my final stage i process it, then cut it in half, process it again, and cut it onr more time to get different feeding sizes. I also use standard egg crate and press the mixture into the crate and freeze. This makes individual cubes

I’d also add that varied foods are probably better. Live phytoplankton probably at the smaller micron size likely would be the best overall when target fed.

Imo I dont think you have to go with diy blending of food if you can buy rods food or reef frenzy. Use one of those as a base and just add additional items you want. Though those foods have tons of stuff alread.. Prob just add some more reef chili to reef frenzy, supplement aminos (like aquavitro fuel) etc and good to go.

Have to say BRS is one awesome company. Trying to think of a company that has done as much as BRS for the hobby as a whole. Sure there are fantastic manufacturers out there but for general knowledge and helping us understand our prised animals and what we need to take care of them no one comes close! Awesome job BRS. Now how about you guys branch out to Europe so i can do buissness with you? :p

Many thanks for all your great videos and by far the most informative series, I was wondering if there are any benefits of running a skimmer other than oxygenating the water and raising ph if you have a refugium that is capable of removing nitrates and phosphates, surely the skimmers are removing more good than bad, especially if using a filter roller combined with a refugium, would also live to know how dosing phytoplankton zooplankton benefits corals

This is just one anecdotal tale, so take it for what it's worth, but I sold my last skimmer in 2007. I've only used algae (and of course bacterial) filtration since then. This is on tanks from 60-210 gallon (225-795 L.) I have never used mechanical filters like filter socks, filter floss, or roller mats either. I let it decay in the tank then export the excess as algae biomass. I defer to the Ph.D's to debate the merits, but I've been happy with my results. As Ryan says, with sufficient algae given proper lighting, you can still do "heavy in; heavy out" if you like. I've found the key to success with this approach is patience though. I learned the hard way on my first tank that nothing good happens quickly in aquaria.

Which of the speciality foods can be automated with a dosing pump? I have been feeding Redsea A and B but it needs to be refrigerated and often a hassle to feed specially by turning the skimmer off and the forgetting to turn it back on. I was looking at AcroPower but I believe it need to be stied each time before feeding.

Feeding is good, but probably not necessary. Depends also on how you feed your tank. Increased feeding, when probably spot feeding / direct feeding likely will increase growth and increase coloration. But should likely be coupled then with increased flow and filtration shortly after feeding and between feeding periods. For most corals they are feeling on micronutrients.

Not sure why in this hobby the science and observation by study in the wild of the corals and fish (especially the corals) don’t carry over by the aquarists and hobbyists in this hobby. So much just based on personal opinion rather than understanding what we can know by observing from scuba diving etc.

ATF intheHouse for sure there are similarities between our tanks and the ocean. At the same time they are worlds apart. When you consider the volume & differences in flow, nutrition, biological availability, light, etc you cannot base your tank solely on the ocean. You need to remember it is impossible to replicate and your tank will never be the same. You are not trying to replicate you are trying to create an environment that your animals can adapt and thrive in.
