We leave Star wors village behind, looking to head into the Namqualand National Park Coastal section. Where we plan to camp offgrid for a couple days, testing our solar setup and trying to find out just how much solar is necessary to keep an Overlanding rig going! The Hilux has a 90L Fridge/Freezer, portable lithium powerpacks and plenty of camera equipment and laptops to charge. How will everything be handled by a single 160Watt Redarc Solar Blanket?? Lets find out. Our campsite a Skuinsbaai Noord, was close to perfect in scenery, sure it was windy but the sun shon beautiful for our little test and we were also joining my swarms of flies infesting our campsite. We also looked at having a shower in the Eezi Awn cube and met up with Nicky from Terrain Tamer, who took us exploring nearby in his Nissan Patrol, where we found a shipwreck and plenty of awesome wildlife in the National Park!

On our recent Botswana trip we found we had more than enough power with our Redarc with lithium battery and solar panel. The water became more of a problem when staying a few days off grid.

Imagine if you had a fixed solar panel fitted on top of your RTT? It would even be simpler to access solar power. And will continue to charge your batteries via solar on the move. Lessening the load from your alternator in having to also charge the 2nd battery.

Relativities. If you do away with frozen meat, frozen ice-creams etc, you can carry a smaller fridge only (less power required), no need for a heavy expensive lithium battery, dispense with the bulky heavy redarc power board eating into your load space and at the same time drop weight out of the vehicle. Simple touring with only a basic multimeter to keep an eye on things. Simple, less to go wrong, easier to diagnose if it does.

We already live in Africa! We go overlanding to have consistent connection to electricity and running water! Hahaha but all jokes aside, I always say, travel the way you need to and that gets you out and exploring. You dont need all the stuff, but you need what you feel you need. I like having a robust battery system because I film an entire show for you guys, and our trip was 35 days where we dont have constant access to fresh meat and vegetables, so its different strokes for different folks; but definitely as long as youre out there having the best time, thats all that I care about!

You shouldn't be too worried about not having enough power. As long as you have sunlight, with your setup, you should have all the power you need. I'll be more worried about running out of water and/or fuel. You have a great setup on your HIlux.👍

Fantastic content as usual!!! Two quick things, have you considered getting your steering leather wrapped? 🤔 i think that would be a good sponsorship as many peeps would require those services. Would tou be able to share costing for a setup of your redarc system? Im keen on that personally. Keep up the great work again!! Can't wait for the Isuzu to join you on a not so solo trip!! Bet Andy agrees with me on that!! Thanks

I have really wanted to get a new steering wheel! hand sanitizer was certainly not kind to mind over the past 2 years! Im considering buying a new steering wheel; but there is also a guy we know who re wraps and paints the steering wheels too, so might do that for the next big trip! The redarc system in South Africa can be found here bit.ly/RedarcROAM ; The 2 main components are the Redvision TVMS80 (The brain) and the Manager30 (the heart). These are not cheap, but I dont think you will easily find better and definitely not so well executed! Im just out of the province for the next month but when I'm back I will be installing Andy's Dual battery sytem and solar panel, and his truck will almost be ready for some action!

Interested in the comment about the flies. First time I have heard of this in Namaqua. Your rig looks exceptional! What sort of Garmin GPS are you using - screen is a lot better than mine. l see your bush hat does not fly away in the Namaqua gale??😁 Many thanks for the video.
@RoamOverlanding

The flies can sometimes be caused by a wash up of a lot of seaweed; but these guys were loving the Eco Toilets... We literally watched them grow from little midges into full on big flies throughout the day. It was crazy! The GPS is the Garmin Tread XL Overland Edition; it comes in the XL and a normal size; very impressive device, I install Tracks4Africa on it and that also adds a bunch more local detail! I tie that hat on real tight! Luckily I have multiple chins for a more secure grip! haahahha! Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed!

@@RoamOverlanding Point taken. I didn't read the title too closely and just saw the overlanding bit. Your viewers should note that you have optimum charging conditions there. On an overcast day or in a cooler part of the world you'd need about double the solar capacity, and there are some days when solar yields virtually nothing.

Its feels like the video is more about the sponsors product than about the trip. Just my observation.
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding Жыл бұрын
Hey Tommy, this video might be that way; but the general information would be the same regardless of charging system or solar panel; what makes it interesting is that the redarc system allows me to quantify the information a bit more easily. This particular trip has entirely been possible because of sponsors like Redarc, so in thatcase I dont think 1 episode in 10 thats a bit more product heavy is too bad! If it means anything to you, they didnt ask for a video like this; I just felt that it was something interesting to share, and I was genuinely excited about it! But I do however appreciate your feedback anyways!
