Thanks. We cruised the Chesapeake Bay last summer then headed south for the winter staying in Stuart, Marathon and Stock Island. We started our Loop in late April at Stock Island and currently docked in Yorktown. Thanks for the video. For me it’s time to venture out of the Bay to areas unknown to me so your talk gave me insight of “what’s to expect”.

Hi there Capt. Paul. I completely agree that the inside route, up or down the coast of NJ is a large PIA. However, that said, boaters need to be careful with the weather and ocean along the Jersey coast. It can be very rough. Hang at Cape May and pick your day. As you know, we lived our lives (up until recently) on the eastern half of Long Island. We used to make an annual summer trip to the Hudson. Completely awe inspiring to cruise past the Statue of Liberty and along the coast of Manhattan. The lower and upper bays of the Hudson, can be very choppy or downright rough due to wind, current and many, many wakes. It gets so much better about halfway north along Manhattan Island. BTW, the trip around Manhattan is equally inspiring, maybe more so, going up the East River. It's worth taking the time to do it! One of the tricks for slow boats is to play the tides. Someone in the comments asked about the current coming down the Hudson. Generally, southbound current is between one half (.5), and 3 knots. However, the Hudson is definitely tidal to very far up. Almost to the Troy Locks at the entrance to the Erie Canal. If heading north, try to ride the in coming tide. Yes, and do keep a sharp watch for floating debris. Logs and dock lumber are a regular thing on the Hudson. Easy to see, you just have to be looking. I see in this episode that you stayed at Miramar Yacht Club. That was always our first destination coming from Eastern Long Island. Our long time, good and dear friend, Pattie Cunningham, was likely the club Commodore at the time you were there. Some years we joined her on her sailboat and other years she joined us on our powerboat for summer trips up the Hudson. Miramar is a great spot to jump off to head up the Hudson. The club is located in a fascinating piece of NYC. The body of water is called Sheepshead Bay, but Emmons Ave, the street out in front of the YC is a great place to stroll and explore. The neiborhood is called Sheepshead Bay and is just east of Coney Island. These neiborhoods are in the borough of Brooklyn. One of the five boroughs of NYC. These two neighborhoods are heavily populated with Russian ex-pats nowadays and the club has many Russian members. Hey, it New York! Coming up the NJ coast, there are a couple of places to stop for the night or more before heading into the opening of the Hudson. Sandy Hook is the last bit of ocean front land, heading north along NJ. Inside is Sandy Hook Bay. Ther are a couple of anchorages and a couple of really good marinas with mooring fields. The biggest is Atlantic Highlands. Well protected by a large rock jetty to all but a strong east wind. The other is Keyport, with good protection all around. Both have lovely small towns to explore, shop and dine. Closer to the opening of the Hudson and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge is Great Kills Harbor. GKH is amazing. You can't see the harbor from the approach on Raritan Bay. It has a narrow but well marked channel to enter, but when you reach the end and turn to starboard to enter the harbor you can't believe that you are in a borough of NYC, Staten Island. It looks like a country harbor. Birds of all kinds, fish jumping, lots of wildlife. Gorgeous! Follow the channel to your left as you are entering. Marinas, yacht clubs line the shore, with a large mooring field. I can't believe how beautiful it is in here, also very well protected. In fact all three of these places are gorgeous! Coming out of GKH it's a couple of easy turns to port and you're under the VZ Bridge. I would never recommend mooring or anchoring in the field behind the Statue of Liberty. Very rough! Go past the Statue, smile, take pics of yourself on your boat in front of the Statue. Be awed and proud! Buddy boats get the best pics of you on your boat with the Statue behind. If you've never been to Manhattan (The City as New Yorkers refer to it), Cough up the money for a night or two at Liberty Landing in NJ. Take one of the many commuter ferries across to Manhattan. Have a blast. Nothing I've seen is like it. Have a plan as to what you want to see or do there. A quick ferry ride back to Liberty Landing and your home on your boat for the night. Be situationally aware there, but enjoy. Much to do and see along the Hudson!

Delaware City is where you picked up Southern Estate. It's also where I realized Nebo was junk. I think it still shows Loop Princess docked there. Yea,I've been around awhile.

Thanks Paul. How was the current on the Hudson? As you know, slow boats always have to factor current in the plans.

Hey Paul. Im looking at a chris craft 350 this weeknd near baltimore harbor. If the purchase goes thru probly in a month or so plan to take the boat down to mrytle beach as a live aboard. I dont have much experience with driving a boat that far. Will be trying to recruit a pilot more capable to make that journey with me.
