I've been in Ephesians for over a year now. It is a book of majesty and great truths and Paul did a jam-up job proclaiming the glory of God in it. But to get the historical side like this video showed, especially about how "spiritual" the Ephesians were about the darkness and their past lives, shines a whole new light on why Paul wrote what he wrote in Ephesians.👍

Good stuff! Problem in exegesis always arises when preachers have to make a personal application from what the author wrote to the church as a whole. The application is for the church more than me. It's not that I have an identity as an Ephesian-- which is true-- but, that we as a church are unified. Both are important, but that's not what Paul is mainly writing about. Paul is preaching that the church would find its unity in the same way Jesus, the Father and Holy Spirit find theirs'. Which, is more implicitly stated beginning in chapter 1 ending in chapter 5. It is also helpful to read Eph. alongside the letter to the Church at Ephesus in Revelation. There, we definitely see the importance of identity in Christ.

We’re there any disputes or conflict in the church of Ephesus for Paul to write about unity that was in the letter?
@TheBibleEffect
@TheBibleEffect Жыл бұрын
Very good question, coming from great observations from the book. Yes, there does seem to be some possible unity issues, as Paul directs a notable portion of his book to that topic. In chapter 2 it sounds like there might be some issues between Jewish and Gentile Christians. Paul seems to emphasize that our ethnic distinctions are not really distinctions at all in the body of Christ. While we do have distinctions of calling (chapter 4), those distinctions are not to divide us but all for the same purpose, which is to equip the saints... build up the body of Christ until we reflect the unity and maturity that we are called to in Christ (4:11-13). Blessings!

Thanks for the summary of the historical background! Great effort! Regarding "the Ephesians viewed this world as full of demons and dark powers who are intent on bringing them harm", could I ask for sources? I'm not fully convinced that Paul wrote the Epistle with the intention of dispelling this view (not that I support the view).
@TheBibleEffect
@TheBibleEffect 2 жыл бұрын
This is a great question! This worldview of the Ephesians comes across in ancient letters known as the "Ephesia Grammata". These were magical spells that they often inscribed on items such as amulets or papyri, with the hope that they would protect them from the spiritual world. These were likely part of the burning of the Ephesian magical books, referenced in Acts 19:19. Clinton E. Arnold writes of the Ephesian fear of the spirit world in the Zondervan Illustrated Bible Dictionary's entry on Ephesians. He writes more of this in his Ephesians entry in the Dictionary of Paul & Letters by IVP. I hope that helps! Thank you for your question, and feel free to ask any other questions you may have. @@surr3al305 Another very excellent question. The Ephesia Grammata were inscribed in the statue of Artemis, which was a very popular Ephesian goddess at this time. The Ephesians were afraid and constantly trying to please false gods in fear of punishment and in hopes of reward based on what they do. This is a textbook definition of the 5th main world religion, animism. Animism has much mystisisum and belief in spirits and superstitions and belief in reincarnation. But we do not need to fear as slaves messing up or straining to perfectly please God, because Jesus did it all for us, we are perfectly acceptable to God through Him and Him alone.

Its is claimed that the apostles linked 'God the Father' & 'The Lord Jesus Christ' as if they were presenting the two as ONE! Just the epistle to the Ephesians proves this a 'twisting' of scripture! Starting with Paul's intro 1:3 "Blessed be the GOD AND FATHER OF the Lord Jesus Christ". Then 1:17 "That the GOD OF our Lord Jesus Christ". Then 2:16 "(Christ) Reconciled us TO GOD". Then 3:9; "God who created all things THROUGH Christ". Then 3:14 "I bow my knees unto THE FATHER OF our Lord Jesus Christ". Then 4:6 "9There is ONE GOD AND FATHER of all, who is ABOVE ALL..". 5:2 "(Christ) hath loved us and hath given himself for us as an offering and a SACRIFICE TO GOD". 5:20; "Giving thanks always for ALL THINGS UNTO GOD THE FATHER in the name of Jesus Christ". The FATHER is Supreme!

The doctrine of the Trinity is a much bigger discussion that I can adequately cover here in the comments. I can tell you, that according to the traditional Christian doctrine of the Trinity, none of the verses you mentioned here are problematic (the wording you quoted from Ephesians 3:14 is disputed and likely not original). A well-explained and well-respected description of the Trinity can be found in C.S. Lewis' book, Mere Christianity (in the section titled, Book IV). The book is widely and easily available, even in many public libraries. I hope that can help to clarify. Blessings!

While some of the historical reconstruction might be accurate here, it's really concerning that the theme of the church (which is central to the book AND Paul's concept of our identity in Christ) is completely absent from this video. Not only that, the boy is pictured alone, adding to the effect that Paul's primary concern was with how people viewed themselves individually. This cannot be supported by even a cursory reading of the book itself.
@TheBibleEffect

Thank you for your comment. This video is not meant to be an overview of the content of the book, but rather the historical and cultural background. We hope to give people some helpful tools of understanding the historical context of each book of the Bible when they read and study it for themselves. With regards to the person in the applicational portion of the video, this was a creative decision to bring across the applicational message of identity found in the book. We recognize that a deep book like Ephesians offers much more than one applicational message, including the unity of the body of Christ. Blessings!

You should read Ephesians and understand it through the lens the Bible gives you, not " history". If God thought it was important for us to know, he would have mentioned more of the other details. In fact, it is the corruption of knowing both good and evil that started corruption in the first place. If you were stuck on an island with just the Bible, you should be able to understand it alone. If not, you should reconsider your interpretations.
@TheBibleEffect
@TheBibleEffect 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Johnny for your comment. We agree that just reading the Bible alone is sufficient for much understanding and knowledge of God’s truth. Reading the Bible through the lens of the Bible, like you mentioned, helps us to understand so much, as Scripture interprets Scripture. That said, the books of the Bible are not only inspired writings, but also historical documents, written by a historical person, to a historical audience, in a historical and cultural setting. Adding this layer of understanding (to the best of our ability) will help us to better understand God’s inspired message. It is like an added layer or depth of understanding to God’s Word. If you haven’t seen it already, this is touched on in our Context video. For an excellent example of this, you can also see how understanding the laws concerning Roman slavery can help to gain a better depth of understanding of the dynamics of the book of Philemon. We can understand the message of the book when we read the book alone, but we can gain new depth when we add the historical elements as well. Thank you for your comment, and blessings as you continue to study God’s Word!
