Even the best defender can't calculate in Tals aggressive sacrifices; his philosophy: attacking is best defense😂

Tal literally enforces his will over the board…mind over matter.

There's also quite a famous game where Andersson beat Tal in an endgame where Andersson was clearly the superior endgame player, perhaps show that one?😮

Great game, great comments. I think that also Kortchnoi was also superb in defense

Not only a superb defender, Kortchnoi, like Polugaevsky, was a bête noire for Tal.

Chess Dawg, Scheveningen is a district in the Netherlands where there are nice beaches! Your pronunciation of the variation of the Sicilian Defense bearing that district’s name is absolutely ludicrous 😂!!

Great defence by Andersson. He tried everything. And yet insufficient.

Why doesn't black move Rook to C1 Check, King must move to F2. The black knight takes pawn of F5. Maybe white queen takes pawn on A6, then black Knight to G4 Check, and it looks like even to me. If white Queen does not take that pawn (in the sequence I specified) and instead goes to B4 to stop the Knight from checking, well it still looks roughly even. Note: I am not a ranked chess player, just became (re) interested in Chess during the pandemic so maybe I missed something obvious, or maybe it's just "well known" that a rook+knight vs. a queen in an otherwise even endgame is a winner for the side with the queen.

Tal was the Led Zeppelin of chess. Unpredictable, with a dramatic flair for spontaneity. Unstoppable! 😂😂😂

11:35 - wouldn't it have made more sense to move the knight to d5? Protecting it, and attacking that very annoying f pawn.

Chessdawg, I've seen your analysis of this game twice already. I stopped by your channel hoping for a new video and instead watched this a third time which I am better off for. It is clear to me that in most circumstances that a queen is far superior than a rook, pawn, and minor piece because the queen encapsulates far more predatory movement in one move than all three exhibit in three. Here is why: Abraham Lincoln: 'Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.'

The best defender was Korchnoi hands down. Anderson is not even in the same category. Tal's score against Korchnoi - and they had been playing against each other for over thirty years, was catastrophic for Tal...

You might to look up Andersson's exchange sacrifice against Kasparov to pull a draw before you start talking "not even in the same category". At his peak Andersson was easily Korchnoi's equal.😮
@IvanTibster

@peterquinones3522 at his peak maybe. But that's stil 3-4 years. Korchnoi systematically dismantled Tal for over 30 years.

Ulf Anderson was excellent, but couldn't cut it against the elite. Both Fischer and Kasparov destroyed him, and his record against Karpov was terrible except for one win.

Why not Rh5 after Anderson takes the bishop? I guess it comes out about the same as the real result of the game.

Karpov was a great positional player not exactly a defender. Korchnoi was a master at defence and counter attack! Petrosian was also a great defender. Andersson was good, but not great.

Tal was an Attacking beast 😅😂 Like a force of nature !! I doubt whether today’s GMs like Hikaru or Magnus could defend against a Tal aided by Stockfish !! Would be an absolute Knightmare for all & Kramnik would have found most of these combinations interesting 🤪😇
