The BEST thing about SDCC was how kind everyone was. No hate just a celebration of a shared passion for creativity, stories and art.
I have always liked Kevin Smith. If you listen to his podcasts or have seen him speak, he wears his heart 100% on his sleeve. He is Perpetually Optimistic and I enjoy his personality and creative output immensely.
We went to his Mooby’s pop-up. He went around and made time for everyone in the place - said ‘hello’ (and the restaurant was packed).
We got a picture with him and his Fatman Beyond podcast co-host, Marc Bernardin. Becca was wearing her Supergirl outfit, Kevin directed 4 episodes of the CW’s Supergirl. So, the moment he sees her, he gave her a giant hug.
Bec also cosplayed as Mia, from Evil Dead the Game and the 2013 movie. Residiuum offered a photo contest which Bec, as Mia stabbing a giant Deadite Bear won!
We met representatives at 3DHQ, a company that makes 3D printed figurines of people. After talking to them and mentioning our KZfaq channel, we were invited to get scanned so figures could be made.
The three people I was hoping to see at San Diego Comic Con International were Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld and Jim Lee. The superstar artists of my youth. I just couldn’t get at Jim Lee the whole con. Then, while browsing in the exhibition hall, he began an impromptu signing! I asked what was going on and was told he would only sign a specific print and wouldn’t allow any pictures. I got in line and the print ran out about 10 people before my turn. He grabbed some Batman/Spawn books and signed for everyone in the line. Such a decent guy! He was exhausted too, you could tell.
I met Todd McFarlane. I shook his hand and told him ever since I was 10 years old, I thought he was the best artist. He was super kind. Took a selfie and signed my copy of Spawn 1.
Bec and I Met the original Black Ranger, Walter E. Jones, and the 2nd Yellow Ranger, Karen Ashley. They took a picture with us.
Most people today might know Rob Liefeld as the creator of Deadpool. But back in the day, he got hired at Marvel when he was just 19! He drew The New Mutants and drew/wrote X-Force. Created Image comics along with other artists and has worked on top tier books for 30+ years!
He was just standing at a booth!
So, I completed the trifecta of meeting McFarlane, Liefeld and Lee. Got an autograph from all three (and a picture with two). These guys are like comic rock stars. They were everything back in the 90’s and they’re still doing it today.
We met Craig Miller. Craig worked as a consultant on publicity, marketing, and licensing for Lucasfilm. He basically created Star Wars fandom. He began the official Star Wars fan club and wrote Bantha Tracks (among many other contributions). Bantha Tracks, originally known as the Official Star Wars Fan Club Newsletter, was a newsletter published from 1978 to 1987. It is currently a department of Star Wars Insider magazine that focuses on Star Wars fans.
FRANK MILLER was going to sign. Holy…cow. If Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane and Rob Liefeld were the creators who brought joy to my childhood while reading and collecting comic books, then Frank Miller was comics for adulthood. If you’re unfamiliar with the name, Frank Miller is a comic book writer, penciller and inker, novelist, screenwriter, film director, and producer known for his comic stories and graphic novels such as his run on Daredevil, for which he created the character Elektra, he created Sin City, 300, The Dark Knight Returns (which was so influential that the movie Batman v Superman is basically inspired by book 4 of this story).
The poor man is fighting cancer and does not look comfortable nor did he allow selfies. Despite this, he was exceedingly pleasant and kind. Gave off an aura of warmth and seemed happy to see his fans.
There is so much more and we try to cover all of it in this edition of EPIC BEC!
