Unintentional crash tests from the Belle Epoque
I don’t think that most of these accidents caused fatalities..
the car structures of that age were excellent “kinetic energy absorbers” ; the damage concentrated on the car bodies rather than the people bodies..
they were made of wood frames and metal sheets assembled by bolts, for sure they were better shock absorbers than most of the cars from the sixties and seventies did.. these last were authentic moving coffins

Cars got a lot more fragile in the last decades because of planned obsolescence, weight savings and roads got smoother so there isn't a need to build them as though. The passenger compartment is a hard shell but everything around it is paper thin.

@blackdeck9112
@blackdeck9112 3 жыл бұрын
@@Lexrolla-1 Yeah crumple zones and strong passenger compartments are great but I'm referring to overall durability and build quality. For example on old Volvos the front bumper is mounted on dampers which will absorb light impacts and return to to their primal form. On every modern car the bumper/crash bar mounts are designed to absorb the energy bu crumpling so that even after light impacts you will be forced to replace them. Another thing are sway bar links. They used to have rubber bushings which you could tighten as they wore out. These could easily last over a decade before needing replacement. Modern sway bar links use ball joints which are a lot more fragile, wear out quicker and are a lot more expansive to replace. Some of them are even made out of plastic. I've seen them break after only one year of driving. Also they are often mounted to the strut tower instead of the controll arm like on the old design. This way everytime you want to change your tower bearing, dampers or springs you have to undo the bolt the sway bar links. But the way they are designed you often have to cut them and replace them even if they weren't all that worn out. There are many more examples like these. Sorry my english is not all that great when it comes to car parts names i hope what i wrote made sense.
@blackdeck9112
@blackdeck9112 3 жыл бұрын
Basically If you drive your avarage 80's mobile and a 2010's car over an infinite straight bumpy rough terrain road, the 2010's car will break down much sooner and will be much more expensive and difficult to fix. That said I'd much more prefer to be in a modern car during a high speed frontal crash.

Most vehicles in the 1920's and 1930's had mechanical brakes that were poor at best if not regularly adjusted. Night driving would also have been challenging. Six volt system wasn't much better than holding a couple candles in front of your fenders. The chassis were weak and the body mounts were few. They were beautiful modern transportation in their time.

If you were lucky you got electric headlights. Many cars of this vintage still had gas lanterns. You're right many cars had mechanical brakes which didn't work all that well they were also very often only on the rear wheels. Most high schoolers can tell you what happens when you only use rear brakes (parking brake). Lot's of sliding all over the place.

Horrific crashes, many of them fatal. No passive restraints, no safety glass. People frequently ejected--that's why no occupants in many of the photos. There were no road or vehicle safety standards in the good ol' days. Passenger vehicles colliding with fire trucks at 1:21 and 3:09. The Krietzman's Market produce delivery truck rollover at 2:25 is an event my mom has recounted since I can remember. Happened in Minneapolis on Mayday 1937, which was a drizzly Saturday, and her family was at home doing the Saturday chores when they suddenly heard a screeechh, whomp-whomp-WHOMP, and rushed outside to see the truck flipped over and the driver standing up "rubbing his noggin", as she put it. He evidently was in a hurry to get his deliveries completed and took the corner too fast. Suffered no serious injuries, thankfully. The accident drew a crowd of people who were more interested in scooping up and taking home the scattered veggies than in the welfare of the driver.

Despite the great simplicity that made these cars easy to work on the we’re not safe because it wouldn’t be until the late fifties until people started to testing them in crash test and it would not be until the mid to late seventies until car companies really started to follow them. Notice in a great many of the wrecks the Wooden Spoke Wheels have disintegrated. Have heard years ago from an old timer the Wooden spoke wheels shrink and expand with weather, and work loose and should be maintained. But safety or horrible and they aren’t economic either, maybe quality is better in some parts but it’s usually quite bad, only thing is that they have less parts that can break

The description is a very interesting side not that punctuates these crashes very well; "since the bodies were made mostly of wood and sheet metal, kinetic energy would be concentrated in the cars body rather than the passenger making these cars much safer than those from the 60' and 70's" Very cool indeed!

On the contrary, it wasn't quite until the late 30's cara began to be made of thicker metal. These early models were held together with a combination of wood and tin sadly! A touch of aluminum or cast iron here or there. But for the most part? They were mainly made like horse carriages.

@PHOENIX RISING Exactly. Feel bad for that poor '59 and I ain't even a Malibu guy, always preferred the Fleetline but that's neither here nor there. Personally I think if we combined old with new (an actual steel/solid metal car plus the trillions of safety features in modern cars), we'd have a practically bullet proof car (minus the computer crap of course). But, GM would never do that. There's more of a profit in cheap plastic crap than actual US steel unfortunately.

wow.... I mean some of these cars don't even look like they could go fast enough to do that to themselves. Aren't these older cars built like metal tanks also? Must have been some really hard as hell crashes.

I can't believe the way those old cars fell apart. I thought they were better built than that. Among the cars I can identify are a Hudson Essex, Chevrolet, Buick, Packard. Model t and an early twenties Chevrolet. Mind blowing to see people then had to go through what we do today.
