There is a difference in a timber and a canebrake. I know most people use the names interchangeably but the distinct difference is in their venom.. a timber is hot but a canebrake is super hot.

my cat found a full grown hognose the other day , my wife saw the cat and snake dancing and screamed for me . so as soon as I chased the cat away , I realized what kind of snake it was , and it was super pissed , so I reached down and kinda touched it and it head butted me twice real quick. I immediately screamed " oh it got me " and fell over over like I was dead . my wife thought it was a deadly viper and was getting ready to call 911.................when I started laughing uncontrollably I

When I was moving into my house nearly five years ago exactly, I encountered a huge toad flopping near the door like he wanted in. I didn't want him trod on so I put his big warty butt in my "bra safe" while we brought the rest of the stuff in. I guess he liked it in there it was dark and warm and he fought me when I went to get him out. LOL I love slithery things and gave him a kiss for luck and put him under our citrus tree. One night after we were settled in we were on our new front porch just a few days before it turns "cold." That's right after Halloween usually by November 5th and boom it's not Fall it's cold ( well cold for NW Fla which is colder longer than Central or South Fla ). I heard him croaking and I said "come to Mama Toady...come see Mama! LOL I was not really expecting him to show up, but in just a few minutes I felt something on my foot he was there with his cold little elbows up on my sandals. He was not the least bit afraid of me. I picked him up again and I told him that he better get underground. I think I found him something to eat. I've been force feed'n em since I was a kid. I kissed him again but never saw him again. I see his toadlings tho!

Although probably not the case, the Pigmy caught at first looks suspiciously like a Timber/Canebrake and Pigmy hybrid. Even the larger than normal rattle. Would really like to see the head scales. I must now ask, "Why do fat chance and slim chance mean the same thing?

Probably because most Hognoses in the pet trade are Westerns, Easterns don’t make for easy captives. There are a few people who breed colorful Easterns though.

Years ago I had some workers at my house in Little Rock. When I got home from work they were freaking out about this aggressive, venomous snake they killed - it scared the fool out them, puffing up and hissing. Sadly it was a hognose snake. I can understand their concern - I have run into them as well and the "show" they put on is intimidating even knowing it is mostly bluff. If it had just slithered off into the woods it probably would have survived.

Your content is always great to watch! Quick Question: Do you normally see hognose snakes around this time, or can you find them in other parts of the year? Great video!
@NKFherping
@NKFherping 2 жыл бұрын
They’re just as active in spring, but there aren’t fresh babies around that time of year so generally Fall is better. But anytime it’s cool, but not cold, can be a good time for Hognoses. 58-75° or so.

Yeah man! That is a stunner carolina pig! Nice & clean! Almost looks like a western, I use to see some clean ones like that in extreme southeastern N.C. Near Wilm, But haven’t see any in that area in over almost 20yrs now! Unfortunately I think that population along with Simus in that area has become extirpated from commercial & residential development.

No, but rather they employ a similar defensive strategy to Cobras: making themselves look bigger and exposing intimidating colors and patterns.

Hey Noah! I had a question quick question about Easterns. I saw one that had nearly the exact coloration of a pygmy rattlesnake here in East Texas, and got me wondering if there are populations that mimic the coloration of pygmy rattlesnakes as defense. I have never seen a pygmy where I was the eastern, so I was wondering if you have seen or heard of this happening before.

Some people do think that Hognoses are Pygmy mimics, so it’s possible.

What do you consider North Georgia? I know I’m in the southern Piedmont as I live on the Coweta/Meriwether County line on the Coweta side. I look at the map and there’s no question I’m in the Piedmont but we’re just on the southern end of what is now considered Metro-Atlanta 🙄. I’m too far north to be Central GA and too far south to be North GA. The temps here usually run closer to Macon or Columbus temps than Atl. I know my area has some Timber rattlers. I’ve seen a hatchling before but I don’t know about many of the others you are finding. I thought the Coral Snake was farther south, although when I learned that we didn’t have armadillos here either so….. Our yard is full of king snakes, rat snakes, corn snakes and brown snakes. Occasionally you see a copperhead and once I had a cottonmouth not appreciate my looking at him from like 10 ft away and he stood up and came after me. I got in the truck. But that wasn’t close to the house…not mine anyway. 😂 So I guess what I’m asking is what are the chances of me seeing a pigmy rattler, hog nose or coral?
@NKFherping
@NKFherping 2 жыл бұрын
I consider metro-Atlanta and northward as North Georgia. I live in Coweta County too, but none of this video was filmed there. Corals do come as far north as southern Meriwether though!

That’s cool to know. I never knew of “herping” but I have gone out road cruising box turtles. I want to keep watching to learn so I can road cruise myself, only I can’t do what you do. I can help harmless snakes off the road but I’m not touching a venomous one. I have appreciation and curiosity but no experience. Without common sense that could be a “killer” combination. I LOVE exploring dirt roads! My hubby found a box turtle on our land the other day that I’d love your opinion on. I took a bunch of pictures before we let her (I’m pretty sure) go back to her business. I’m pretty sure that was the oldest turtle I’ve ever seen. It was so cool. The carapace was rubbed smooth except in spots where it had either been hit by a car or played with by a predator but even the old wound’s edges were rubbed smooth by time. The plastron was the same except for a hole that looked like it went almost all the way through but once again the edges were smooth where it had healed. The rest was shined smooth. I counted scutes but couldn’t keep count because they we’re so close together and mostly rubbed smooth. Just my own turtle experience, I’m thinking that turtle was 50+ at least. Turtles fascinate me, all wildlife does but box turtles in particular. I also like rehabbing baby possums when they present themselves to me in need. I’d never have thought I’d do that but one day I was driving down my road and saw a DOR possum but a baby was hightailing it across the road. I pulled off and caught it, rolling it up in the tail of my tee shirt. I went to the mama and found one more still alive. Back then there was a rehabilitation center in Palmetto so I took them there. They have since closed. Last year my husband found a baby that I think had probably fallen off or was dumped off a bit early. He said it wasn’t acting right so he picked it up. We looked it over and I decided to try my hand at rehabbing it myself. I had to experiment some with feeding methods but I feed her (I think) for about two weeks and had her eating solid foods. She’d beefed up a bit and ate a few worms (all I could find for prey to test her out on). I think she just needed a couple extra weeks to be fully ready. I let her go. I’ve noticed a possum that hangs around the house closely. I kind of hope it’s her. Thanks for all of your awesome information. If I were still homeschooling (my students graduated) I’d definitely use your channel as curriculum.

Do any people ever get bit by these or accidentally find them in their yards, barns, houses, garages, campgrounds when camping or while swimming in lakes and rivers? Basically do we constantly have to keep on the lookout for deadly venomous snakes ? Geezzzz, that would really suck if we had to live our entire life that way 😔🙄😒

Moving snakes out of the road before they get hit by cars couldn’t possibly be a more direct conservation effort. Do you have any actual questions, or do just not understand how conservation works at all? It starts with public outreach and education, which is the foundation of my channel.
