If I wanted to drop $70K+ to build a jet, it definitely wouldn't have a strut-braced wing. But get it cheap enough and I might be tempted to buy it because it's cute and has a unique look. But it doesn't look especially fun to fly. 110 cruise? 155 Vne? Meh.

This thing flys around quite nicely with a forty something HP engine, has retractable landing gear, and will scoot along at over 110 mph, and has a stall speed down around 40 mph. That in itself is quite remarkable, But the first thing everyone wants to do is stuff a big heavy 150 to 300 hp motor in it. I bet this would be a super sweet plane with a lighter 85 to 125 hp engine in it. You start stuffing big hp in this thing, you start having to basically redesign the whole plane to carry that hp and extra weight. Then you start defeating the whole purpose for this planes existence.

Also extremely expensive. They want $35,000 just for the kit and that does not include the engine. A Cessna 150 would set you back $50,000 at the most, so you could either buy this aluminum deathtrap or get a proper airplane. The Cessna is also safer and has a lot more features and cargo room.

@buzzypeterson1147
@buzzypeterson1147 2 жыл бұрын
@@MRxMADHATTER actually you’d be surprised. Not as light as you’d think by the time you are done. Plus the Regitity of carbon is a problem. I had a buddy build a wood core composite plane called a kr2. It was very successful in fiberglass. There were many built. The issue is he did his in carbon 100% and it delaminated because the carbon is so stiff. It’s very hard and will delam from the core. That is why cirrus uses very little carbon fiber in their planes. They are actually 90% regular fiberglass.
@MRxMADHATTER
@MRxMADHATTER 2 жыл бұрын
@@buzzypeterson1147 I understand that. I used to build. the F-35 and other planes out of carbon. You can't just use carbon by itself. You have to have a framework to attach it to. Also, it helps to use the right resin when doing the lay ups and then cureing it in an autoclave. That strengthens the carbon quite a bit. Also you can go a little bit thicker without adding much weight. Also layups need to be done in vacum bags to remove the excess resin. Resin is the weak link in carbon fiber. I would not recomend a monocoque design in pure carbon. It can be done but that makes it heavier. To keep it light you need just the right combination of metal formers, stringers, bulkheads, etc. I know it would work if it's engineered right, because I've done it myself.

I'm surprised that homebuilt planes like this don't use motorcycle engines. A 998 CC Honda engine produces 183 HP, and running at 50% throttle that should still be close to 90hp, with LOTS to spare. They're also really reliable engines, liquid cooled, electronic fuel injection, and lightweight. And it also runs on Premium pump gas - no leaded AVgas needed. Mind you, a pair of PBS TJ-100 jet engines tucked into the aft end of those tunnels would be sweet, and provide some redundancy in case one of them flames out.

That wing tip must churn up a tornado, might experiment with a vortex limiting diffuser, it will drop your stall speed to about 30-35, and pick you up in ground effect at about 20-25 (rough estimate from a perfect internet world I know, but it could occur , and thats an easy addon) Anyway, looks awesome works great, 40hp pulling 100 knots is pretty efficient judging by my not so up to date exposure.

This heavily reminds me of a style of scratch built RC planes. "RC Powers" made a lot of these sort of designs. I always wondered if it would work full scale. I know the biggest downfall of this design type is the mid prop blowing over the tail section makes them extremely loud acts like a reed. But great tail(elevator and rudder) authority.

I dont think they'll be making an electric version anytime soon since it would make it too heavy unless you only want to fly it for 20 minutes. Its the one thing thats holding back electric cars and vehicles the weight of the batteries to the storage capacity.

A few things.. 1) I wonder if that newer F1 engine thats like 35lbs, but produces like 400hp, from a 1.? something engine could be used with/adapted to this.. & how it would perform. 2) I think the military should invest in programs like what they're creating, &/or invest in creating programs like what theyre creating. 3) 🤔 I wonder if kits created using advanced composites could be used for these kits.. but i guess using aluminum sheeting would be more affordable to maintain them. Regardless, Im glad they've pushed to bring them over here.. Great Job!! Just wish they could get the prices down more.

I don't know if drag is a concern when the prototype goes 110 with less than half the HP of the production version. Also, I'm sure the duct and "stealth" lifting body help push that stall speed down to 40.

Interesting plane. Here's to hoping that fairly high cost doesn't destroy it before it even starts out. A single seater is a hard sell to begin with these days. As there isn't a flying version that is a proof of current kit also isn't helping this here (the low power version in Greece doesn't count here!). Methinks they might have jumped the gun on this possibly. I wish them the best for success though, it is a good looking and different plane, that might just be enough to do it.
