I'm 64 and have listened to a lot of bands and have seen lots of major concerts. But besides the Beatles the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith, I have never bothered to want to know the names of everyone in any other bands. That all changed only a couple of short years ago when i first Heard Nightwish. Not only do I know their names but I know where they come from, where they live and so many other aspects of their life. I want to know what it is that makes all of this unbelievable music happen. Never have I wanted to know so much about any band. I literally cant stop listening to them, and I so much hope I live long enough to see them somewhere in concert. Of course Floors voice has so much to do with all of this but Nightwish is also great without her. Her voice though nothing like it anywhere else on the planet. Yes Tuomas, thanks for the emotions. By the way all the songs will be better than the last but you will always come back to Ghost Love Score because you were introduced to Nightwish with this song.

8:05 Marco was pretty known in Finland already before his joining to Nightwish, due to his own band called Tarot. They are Finnish metal pioneers and started back in 1982 (he is 54 yo). Marco is the bassist and one of the two singers in the band. He also has a solo album out now. If you want to hear what he is capable of I recommend listening few songs from Tarot (for example Pyre of Gods) or from his solo production (Stones, Voice of my Father).

@OldSkueNerd Marco Hietala, the Warwick exclusive bassist, is an awesome front-man singer in his own right. He has his own side project with a couple recorded albums. Everyone in this band are top notch musicians, and you've yet to meet Troy. You can meet him if you react to Last of the Wilds from the same concert.

Marko's been in the metal scene for almost forty years! There's an entire Tarot (the band he and his brother started in the 80s) concert on KZfaq called Undead Indeed, though the quality is what it is. He's also been a guest vocalist/musician on so many albums that it was a little dizzying already twenty years ago when I first heard him.

Jukka, the drummer, is no longer playing with the band. He went on a hiatus in 2014 due to health reasons. He was battling chronic insomnia. He suggested that the band took in his good friend Kai Hatho (Wintersun) as his replacement. In 2019 Jukka announced that he was not coming back. He's doing a lot better, but does not want to risk anything. Kai was made a permanent member and Jukka is still with the band, in their management team.

As a band, Nightwish plays for the song, and since Tuomas is quite particular as to how the songs are supposed to be structured and arranged like, the arrangements are quite detailed. If Tuomas doesn't feel like there needs to be a singing harmony, there isn't one. If he feels there's no need to be a guitar solo, there's not going to be one etc. and everyone works together and understand that song comes first. They have their own thing going one where song structures change a lot depending on what the song needs so you can expect to be surprised. One thing that Tuomas loves to do is to make a pre-chorus or a "C-section" of a song to a complete musical idea instead of one short part. So if normal song structure is ABABCBBB (B=Chorus) then Tuomas likes to do ABCABCDEFG... etc...back to C (C=Chorus). Or even some times never coming back to that chorus again as in this song where the song ends in completely different thing than it started with. And that's the great thing about him as a composer, he doesn't do simple and ordinary songs that follow ordinary patterns. :) Obviously Nightwish has those ABABAB structured songs, but they're not that common. :)

Gabriel Bardac is one of the generals of the NW army. He is leading the charge my friend. Nightwish groove but they specialize in the change up. Marco (the bassist) is a real life Viking from Savonia, Finland. Marco can sing. He used to be the lead vocalist for his former band. The key with Nightwish is they don't just do aggressive metal. They do great melodic music in many different shades of Metal to Celtic folk music. Since you love heavy stuff, check out "Yours is an Empty Hope", live from Wembley 2015. Some more heavy stuff. The drummer Jukka Nevalainen has retired due to illness. The new drummer is now Kai Hahto. So the one you see here is the old drummer. Tuomas Holopainen Keyboard is the genius of the band. He writes 95% of the text.

But she can go from one extreme to another. You've seen a near operatic side of her. When you get to Yours Is an Empty Hope, you'll see another. Marko? First off, you'd love his bass, because it is the same model of bass that John Entwhistle from The Who used. Second, when it comes to his singing, he's modeled his singing off of one Ronnie James Dio. So you can hear it in how he sings as well. Also, at one point, he had been using a vocal coach... some lady named Floor Jansen. Gabriel won't lead you wrong on this; follow that list, and enjoy the ride!

Well I certainly agree with the others - but I also want to give you another suggestion, to show you more of Marco (bass). In 2005 Nightwish made a tribute version to Pink Floyd's song "High Hopes" - and that should go right down your alley - it's a brilliant metalized cover, and you get to hear Marco's voice - most Pink Floyd fanatics admits this cover to be brilliant. Otherwise - Wacken 2013, just check out the the setlist and feel free to ask and we will guide you properly - but you can go wrong - that concert was legendary. haha, loved your shock and awe, you've just begun the journey. But in regards to your liking or wanting the energy of Wacken. Well, I'm pretty sure a lot of that energy you observed was for Nightwish cause you can see how they pump up their fans. And just for an example= The Wacken 2013 had 82,000 there and went from Thur-Sat, and Nightwish was on Sat. Aug. 3rd on the "metal" stage and they were the CLOSING ACT, ha but the crowd doesn't look tired. They were on from 2245-0015, and before them was Anthrax 1700-1815, and then Trivium 1945-2045, and ahead of Nightwish on the "black" stage was Alice Cooper, and on the "party" stage was Candlemass, and yet the crowd wanted more Nightwish, and probably after a song or two, so will you. LOL

Check out "The Islander" at Tempere to see Marco (bass player) take the lead while Floor sings backup. It's a bit of a folky song, in a much more intimate setting.

Anything from this Wacken 2013 show is great but I think you’ll like Song of Myself, Storytime, Ghost River, and Everdream. Marko, the bass player, sings quite a bit with the band and even sings lead on a few songs. He also fronts his own band called Tarot, and recently put out a solo album.

If you want to stay with the Wacken 2013 concert for now, then Ghost River is a good pick considering how you rated this one, and it has some bassist dude vocal action too (his name is Marco btw). Song of Myself is one of my all time favorites from Nightwish, it's a bit more complicated as a composition but overall absolutely solid. It certainly has heaviness, and it's a four part composition of which they played the two middle parts in this live setting. If you want to check the fantasy route, then Storytime is a song well loved by the fans. Ever Dream is an oldie, it's not quite as heavy and starts to encroach power pop territory at times. Honestly all of them are worth checking out, though. Since you have Gabriel's list pinned all the links can be found there.
