Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

Even though it's been close to 50 years since I was sailing in the South Pacific, watching this video brought back the sights, smells, & tranquility one can have in the open ocean, such peace. I loved the sun beating down, the ocean spray, & breezes. On the other hand, I experienced a typhoon with 60' seas between New Guinea & New Zealand that I'll never forget. The ocean can be downright terrifying as well. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride. Safe travels Barry!

@@pplusbthrust I regret not having taken the chance - had it not been a round the world race, I'd have jumped at the offer, but I was still in my late teens and fairly new to sailing. When I was told don't worry, you can be the cook, what little confidence I had flew out the window. 😆

If you didn't have the gusto in your teens, likely you've been ever less inclined since. Some watch adventure videos for the what might have been, others for the memories of what was. My greatest discomfort is too much of my life now begins with, 'I remember when ...' . The cruelest trick is a lucid mind in a stove in body. If you don't grab it now, you never will.

Just gotta say, love your channel. There are a few I started watching that were solo guys such as yourself and Learning by Doing. I loved the alone and ruggedness of it. But then eventually these guys find ladies and give up their proper sailboats for catamarans as their ladies get sea sick. And it goes from being very adventurous to a floating apartment couple's vlog. So I always end up back watching you!

Ship Ahoy, yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum. Barry you made a good one this time also. I've watched you from the beginning and plan to until the end. Have you ever come up on any sea monsters😮 precaution and safety always went out. The sea is a Stern Taskmaster but also beautiful. I went out to sea once with my son in the Navy on a destroyer and loved watching the Dolphins. Brian said the Russians we're forever messing with them and that was in the early 80s. He said he saw a lot of mysterious things especially in the Indian Ocean. Well here's to you never making it down to Davey's Locker and a farewell for now. Thanks much for taking us along and catch you on the next one❤

Barry, I have always enjoyed your videos. This one in particular. I felt emotional as you left as well. I sail Lake Michigan out of Racine, Wisconsin. Not as glorious as your travels but it can get pretty wacky out there. Your wisdom of putting the jack lines down the center of your boat is the smartest. As you say, you stay on the boat. I have argued with many sailors about this for years. Finally, they begin to see the light. I've been sailing for over thirty years and have two rules. #1 Stay on the boat #2 Stay away from the hard things like rocks, reefs, and other boats! It's the KISS principle - Keep It Simple Sailor! Thanks for all the videos, your wisdom, and passion - Peace, Love, and Coconuts!

Jackstays centre - absolutely. It can be a lifesaver. Also, don't clip onto them - pass your tether under and back to your harness/lifejacket loop; you're just as safe, and the connection is shorter so there's less chance of going over.

You are absolutely correct about the jack lines going down the centre of the boat. I saw some study of the dangers of falling overboard attached and there is every chance that if a single-gander falls overboard they quite often cannot get back on board! I also think that if you are on watch in the cockpit you should be connected to both sides of the area so that you can’t be washed overboard. It can be awkward but you will not get washed overboard by a big wave or by rolling over. Stay safe!
