@@rstroh2105 N helps new shoots grow, P helps the Roots, and K helps grow fruit. So you can more easily tell what fertilizer to grab by looking at the numbers. Ex: Dr Earths generic fertilizer is 4-4-4 but its starter fertilizer is 2-4-2. Its more complicated than that of course (isn't everything in gardening), but the simple rhyme helps me remember the order.

My mother in law is in a senior home that has a garden! They raise vegetables and flowers and flowering bushes. The residents are encouraged to responsibly cut the flowers and decorate their rooms with fresh flowers! The veggies are used in cooking the food the residents eat! They do not depend entirely on this of course, but the residents love knowing that they are actually eating what they have seen and sometimes helped raise! They put in a large pumpkin patch and they residents painted these for a Halloween contest, then they were used to make pumpkin soup, which they served for dinner for several meals!

For soil, if you are filling multiple raised beds it is almost always more cost effective to get a bulk delivery of soil rather than using bagged product. Even if the soil is not high quality, you can always amend it with peat moss, compost, vermiculite and/or perlite etc.

Most urban areas that have places where soil compost can be purchased bulk and you can generally have it delivered. It's where professional gardeners go to get the soil they use for gardens. And most places have a large variety of different soils for different uses. And it's less expensive than the commercially baged soil at the garden centres. Sometimes a LOT less expensive.

Not only do you look like brothers, you sound like the same person! I wasn't looking at the screen during the outro and totally didn't realize it was your bro talking! Excellent video, love how you two approached teaching us!

You guys are so lucky to live in the San Diego area. I went there in 1978 to visit my aunt and uncle and it's beautiful. I didn't want to leave. You have the perfect climate for just about anything you want to grow and you can grow all year round. I live in Detroit and we have a very short growing season so you have to be on your game when it comes to when to start. Even then you can run into trouble. Last year it snowed in may and it pretty wiped me out. This year the winter has been warm because of the El Nino and I'm hoping for better luck

I've added a few raised beds and filled them with pure manure/food waste compost of which I buy trailer loads from a landscape supplier for about $60 per cubic yard. I've planted a variety of crops including beans, potatoes, garlic, and kale, and everything has grown as well or better than my other garden beds. It's very loose and easy to dig in with just my hands and moisture retention and drainage have been good. I've even been using it for seed starting and besides having some larger chunks and being more prone to fungus gnats than peat mixtures, my seedlings are growing strong. "Can you grow in pure compost?" could be a good topic for an epic gardening video.

LOVED this video... I learned so much. The method of presentation was perfect for my poor little memory banks - lol. I really 'got it' when you showed your brother each plant from soup to nuts. Do more like this! Thanks

this was very informative for me, I already built myself two giant raised beds and I used cardboard originally as well but after learning cardboard products contain PFAS that can and do get absorbed by plants and we then ingest it, I stopped using cardboard and I actually dug up most of the cardboard I had used. PFAS are carcinogens

This is my 3rd year gardening with raised beds/4th year with containers and I’ve realized, I actually know a lot more than I think watching this. But in so many ways I’m still such a noob lol. I’m finally using a cool planning software this year (seedtime) to maximize cool crop gardening and succession sowing. I’ve been failing so hard with cool season crops and I realized it’s bc I was starting them in March instead of February. Hopefully, I get a really productive season. It’s going to be a really great learning year.

I have found Galvanized Cattle Water tanks to work perfectly well. I recently purchased two 134 gal. 5 ft. tanks at $170.00 each. They are 24 inches deep. No assembly...and really...you can find these tanks in some interesting shapes if you want something other than oval. I had purchased three a couple years ago and have had wonderful success. They are 5 ft. long and 2 ft. deep. And being 24 inches tall...makes for a no-bend weeding job. To fill...I do Hügelkultur--I pack the bottom with cut logs...and it is packed solid for the first 12 inches or so. The top 12 inches is a good soil/compost mix. Anyway...excellent success. And about Hügelkultur...That is how we have done all of our raised beds. Makes for a cheap fill and what Hügelkultur does to help improve the soil is very evident in our harvest!

This is a “Masterclass” for beginning gardeners. All the basics in one. Thank you for this. I’m starting my garden tomorrow with this for information. Gee, I think I’ll need a couple more Birdie’s Beds because now I want to do two round ones like you did here, one for herbs and one for strawberries. And now I know why my strawberries didn’t work the last time (only one berry per every week or two)…I was using a “strawberry pot”, with the pockets. It crowds each plant too much, especially the roots. And I completely agree on the Cherokee Purple tomatoes; they are my absolute favorites. So delicious!
