Epicly Later'd: Ed Templeton (Part 1)

Ed Templeton has been a super-obvious choice for Epicly Later'd since the early days of the show. Maybe that's why it took so long for us to do it. The man is like a skate historian-one benefit of his relatively straight-edge lifestyle is that he has what we like to call "sober memory." He can recall everything from his life growing up in Huntington Beach, California, onward. He also had no boundaries in terms of how personal he would go for our interview. This episode was a big one for us. Enjoy!

Man for a guy that had such a history of abuse, poverty to make it as one of the best street skaters ever and to continue operating Toy Machine is just friggin epic to me. So many "better" board brands have gone defunct but Ed kept pushing this weird company with like a blood sucking monster and today they have some of the best skaters ever, even better than Thomas, Muska, Bam and so on back in the day. I know that I have absolutely no relation to Ed but I have to say I am kind of proud of him, and I know its weird of me saying this but I`m so glad he found his bliss in life and that Toy Machine hasn`t died.

Growing up in Huntington i van confirm two things said here. 1 he was called ollie Ed. The guy i heard it from said they made fun of him cuz all he would do was ollie. 2 his mom was a sweet lady. She saw me skating by myself once at a little kids park where I was skating on a curb and she asked if I ever heard of him. I said of course and she said that was her son.

Jovan TrendMaker Yeah, I see what you mean but with bands it's only natural that a collective thing would form from a natural group. My impression of skating is that success is totally individual- Ed could do very little for his friends when he got signed yet many all individually became pro skater.

A GOOD dad is an important part of one's life whether people want to acknowledge it or not. Seeing those old boards and videos remind me of my old skate days 86-92, here in my home town 99% of businesses were closed on Sunday so we had free rein of all these parking lots man it was fun!

man i miss skateboarding. the quiet reflection of life hanging out at a 3 set outside of some random park or school. drinking beer with friends. having lifes problems drowned out and distracted by the focus of not breaking my ass on the landing. those were good times

The 50-50 grind to 360 varial out that Templeton pulled at the end of his part in Welcome to Hell remains one of the best tricks done on a skateboard, imo

si many british skaters wanted to live in so cal in the heart of skateboarding , i wore my copy of Ban This out freeze framing trying to work out the tricks , really happy for Ed that hes a successful photographer and made it after a hard life , his photos and books are great and like the vid shows him and that generation really pushed skateboarding forward , street shredding , steps , huge flips , its pure athletic genius , a true sk8 god ! ED I SALUTE YOU !

I remember watching The New Deal's "Useless Wooden Toys" over and over again, to the point that the tape almost melted. No matter how tired and beat up I was, I'd watch these tapes and I was ready for more. Big up to Ed. He was an inspiration, and still is.

I grew up around Huntington Beach and we'd always seed Ed killing at the now R.I.P. HB Skate Park in the early 90s. Fond memories of everyone just stopping skating and just watching Ed in awe during sundown at that park.

I loved Ed. He was like me. Lanky and awkward but he was so skilled. He gave guys like me the motivation to push ourselves during an era that was amazing. I spent weeks learning impossible and pressure flips in the late 80’s. Early 90’s. My down fall was I never wanted to leave that era. I loved the old raw new age and feared the tech movement and tiny boards and wheels. I’ll never forget my first Schmitt stixx board and my sma board. Though I did love the black label era.

8:53 being from southern CA and a skateboarder in the early 90s this makes perfect sense to me. I imagine that people that aren't from the US or that time will see this as weird gibberish.

I remember my Toy Machine Monster shirt. I bought that shirt because I saw Ed wearing it. Ahhh, I miss mid to late 90's street skating. Since I lived in Mississippi, there weren't too many of us. This was before the internet, so most had no clue the impact skateboarding was having. There were only 3 skateboarders at my high school, and only because I got them into it. They were long-time friends, so they followed me.

Ed is super chill, even at the LBC premiere Suffer the Joy when shit was hectic he kept his cool. Luckily I had also gone to the Good and Evil premiere a few years earlier, met him there as well. Skate on, Ed.

Back in the 90's Ed Templeton's part in Welcome to Hell just inspired a whole new level of skating for me and my buddies. We even switched from wearing the dumb super baggy jeans to rocking Dickies that rode just above the top of the shoe haha. I hope they cover that Toy Machine video in Part 2 :)

All I remember of Ed Templeton was him in Welcome to Hell doing sick boardslides and his big 58 mm wheels when small wheels were the trend. Also him wearing trucker hats way before they were cool. He was just weird.

If you get pissed at someone for taking a photo of you, do you also get pissed when people just look at you? Cause basically they just captured the moment they saw you, what's it to be mad about.

Taking a picture can be considered an invasion of privacy, depending on the photo's use. These people don't know whether they're gonna be on the front page of some high-traffic website as the subject of ridicule or part of some stalker's photo album. They are most definitely not the same. Are you always this simple-minded?
