In this video I'm setting up Troy's 2nd hand Epiphone Les Paul special 'Vintage Special' edition. This is a bolt-on necked, slab-bodied Les paul in a satin cherry burst finish - a great colour. The playability on the guitar was much harder than it needs to be; it's just suffering from the lack of a really good set up. I go through the steps to address the action and playability in the order I consider and tackle them: neck relief, last fret action and finally first fret action. Each adjustment radically improves the guitar; all 3 together transform it.
I replace the the plastic nut with a Tusq black one, set a low, light action and precision level the frets to make them 'comply' with the action I set. After levelling, re-crowning, sanding and polishing out, I clean up the guitar, oil the fingerboard, fit and stretch out new strings and intonate them.
