At 13:46, your summary that "What the skeptics said is that every cognitive impression, no matter how solid it may seem, will be indistinguishable from some other impression," is confused. In Chapter X of The Outlines of Pyrrhonism (PH) , Sextus Empiricus writes the following, "Those who say that “ the Skeptics abolish appearances,” or phenomena, seem to me to be unacquainted with the statements of our School. For, as we said above, we do not overthrow the affective sense-impressions which induce our assent involuntarily ; and these impressions are “ the appearances.” And when we question whether the underlying object is such as it appears, we grant the fact that it appears, and our doubt does not concern the appearance itself but the account given of that appearance,-and that is a different thing from questioning the appearance itself. This difference between the impression and "the account given of it," is of the greatest importance. The two are not the same. It is always "the account," upon which one should maintain a skeptical suspension of judgement and NOT "the impression," itself, which is involuntarily impressed upon a person.

Mr. X was also turned down by Grocer M. He also felt miserable for a week and a half before getting a job at a third grocer, Grocer O. One day he too met his future wife at the grocer, but not where he was working, Grocer O. On his way home he remembered something he had forgotten to buy at work, but he was almost home so popped into the nearest grocer, Grocer M - the one he had been rejected by. You're talking about accidents. Accidents are irrelevant for regulating your emotions. I could equally easily invent a scenario closer to your own where the hapless fellow never meets any future wife - though he might have done so if he had gotten the job at Grocer M.
