Here's another factor to oral traditions - studies have shown [citation needed] that learning to read and write reduces a person's ability to remember, so 'illiterate' people have a greater capacity to remember stories, etc. in oral traditions. Yet another thing is if you look at texts written down from oral traditions (Buddhist sutras, for example), you will see that they are very repetitive - restating the same thing in subtly different ways, using phrases to build a rhythm, and combining prose and verse forms, all to help in memorising the teaching. A regular practice of rhythmical chanting of these oral communications embeds them deeply in the memory, even to the extent of being able to repeat them faultlessly without even thinking about them.
