Dungeon Tiles are a staple craft for any DM who uses 3D terrain for the table. In this episode, I'll show you how to make durable dungeon tiles fast and easy that require no painting. For less than $15, you can craft 200+ 2"x2" in less than four hours or 60+ 4"x4" tiles in less than an hour.

Another thought is that on the wood tiles there are two grain patterns taking place, the printed image and the embossed image. The printed image is comically over scale for tiles, especially with things like knots.....BUT the embossed grain isn’t far off from what you want. So while these are a great quick tile, IF someone wanted to put a little time in and spray paint the wood tiles first to remove the image and paint it out in a wood scheme the embossed grain would turn it into a really nice looking tile with the advantage is still being very thin and flat.

Great idea. As an alternative to the non-slip mats, I like to use thin EVA foam sheets, (the kids craft stuff that comes in lots of colours). You'll get the same elevation and non-slip feature but the exposed edges will look tidier than the checker pattern. Then you could also use EVA foam mats for height variation if that was something you were looking for.

Just a quick tip for people who have dollar tree stores near by, they sell shelf liner for a dollar. I also tested my wet erase markers on a Tile before I cut it and it wiped right off, not only that but the silver sharpie I'm using to grid my 2"x2" tiles doesn't wipe off with the wet/dry erase wipes I've bought for games

I like these. I tend to use a lot of 4x4 and 4x8 common rooms, and 2x2, 2x4, and 2x8 corridors. I do occasionally have use for larger rooms, but those are usually boss rooms. I don't intend to use walls, just doorways to separate rooms.

This is one of the best ideas I've come across, cheap and quick! I also found using a sturdy desktop paper cutter/guillotine helps cut the tiles quickly and accurately (I didn't find any problems with cutting right through the tile, but it may depend on your tiles). Either way, a great alternative (or addition) to painting foam tiles - thank you!

Let me know how it works for you. I'm going back for some more wood planks, and will try out Adam's idea to use a dark brown marker instead of black to draw the planks. You can get the vinyl tile even cheaper if you buy the larger sheets (24" x 24" and larger available), and the cost-per-tile really drops.

I have been struggling for years on if I should do tiles or not. I live my grid but dang I love these. I made a ton and made a board with the drawer liner on it. Never moves. I use grids. Dry erase takes off the permanent marker but I just sprayed clear core over the tiles and wet erase works great. Thank you so much for helping me to overcome the fear of painstaking labor to make tiles. They are awesome. I made dungeon and wood. Now I'm thinking about how to make cave tiles. Any thoughts?

As a follow up, as I've been experimenting with these I found that the beveling was the hardest part for me, so what I did was I started cutting the rubber undersides a bit shorter of a diameter before attaching them to the tiles, so I don't have to taper them after. So far I am really liking it, I made a few and I plan on doing a good workday soon to make a big mass of 'em.

Late reply, but save nine tiles to make a 3' x 3' board for your miniature skirmish games! Song of Blade and Heroes and Lasting Tales use 3x3 boards. Warhammer uses a 4x6 board. Since vinyl tiles are sold in packs of 20, that means you'll have lots of extra tiles with a 4x6 board.

A clever idea. I would suggest using a dark brown marker for drawing the planks onto the wood grain tiles as it would blend better than pure black lines. It occurs to me there is an opportunity for a business to offer "floor" tiles which are printed with scaled down imagery of marble, wood, etc. and then sell them precut with rubber or felt already applied to their bottoms. :-)

just a tip for everyone: you can use EVA foam sheet instead of the rubber mat, stick it to the whole tiles first then clamp/tape the tiles together. Then use a hacksaw to cut them all at once. It worked for me and looks great.

@@TheTabletopEngineer I like the look of them, quarter heights are a nice compromise, but then you limit the placement of the tile as well meaning you need more. Usability vs aesthetic, no walls wins for me.

Color print. Laminate Cut If desired, stick felt on the back to reduce sliding. Or glue the laminated color prints on these vinyl tiles. The lamination film can be drawn n with wet erase or dry erase and it will cme off using the damp cloth or dry cloth as appropriate for the marker.
