AKC Obedience is a dog training skill like few others. For the most part it is women dominating the sport and everyone knows everyone. I have competed in AKC obedience all the way from Novice to Utility. The person that first introduced me to the sport many years ago was Flo Walberg. We have stayed friends over the years and I thought it would be great to get her on the show and talk about dog training and more.
Flo has competed at the highest levels and WON at those levels. She has trained, competed and titled Border Collies as well as Rottweilers over the years. To watch Flo compete is awesome. She is composed, professional and a TOP COMPETITOR. There are only a few people I like to watch doing AKC Obedience and Flo is one of them.
In this chat we talk about the mindset, the training, the dogs and her beginnings in the sport. No matter what style of dog training you're doing, you'll gain something from this podcast with the one and only Flo Walberg!

When you listen to these, you can get the impression that you just say to the dog “X” and repeat a hundred (thousand) times and that’s it, but, I have my dog in training locally, and after the Sonja Nordstrom podcast I discovered that Ms Nordstrom was only 45 minutes away, so I took my boy to see her! Wow! Blown away..there is so, so much subtlety and finesse and observation involved with training a dog..I so thought it was going to be easier than it is..luckily I stumbled into getting a nice GS pup, it’s only me now that will screw him up! I appreciate so much all this wonderful free content..it is so, so, SO valuable..THANKS!

Thoroughly enjoyed this podcast. It stirred up a bit of competition obedience “bug,”I haven’t competed in almost 10 years. So much fun! I did complete akc UD’s on 2 Siberian Huskies. Loved it, miss it! Thank you Robert and Flo!

Agree that both kids and dogs need discipline, structure, consistency and both rewards and corrections. Sad that both kids and dogs are allowed to be the boss in today's world. It is a different world today.

Yes children need to be structured and educated and supervised! Too many incidents result in dog being euthanised

Depends on the household..my kid had lots of boundaries and all my nephews and nieces did too.

@@PARoth2011 That is true that it depends on the household & it's wonderful to hear that your family has boundaries. And, I agree that there are still great parents & kids out there. It's a crazy world out there these days; super challenging for everyone, as the times have changed so quickly over the years.

Somehow this comment was put on the next podcast instead of the interview on training Pitbulls for the military. Holy Toledo, this podcast is fabulous, ❤❤❤ I have a 2 yr old GSD/BM cross girl I rescued in Dec and my hubby has a 1 yr old Pitbull cross we rescued last July we’ve been doing all the obedience training and I suggested to my hubby that our Pit boy would be great in scent work after I did beginner scent with my girl. Now I’m definitely going to introduce our pup to that. Thank you for all the positivity and pointing out race has nothing to do with bad owners, I hate racism and the way it causes division in our country. Same with people who hate on Pitbulls without ever handling one. Dog training should be bringing us together so we can be stronger, not tearing us down. Btw, I heard about you from the Maligator Mom which happened to show up in my KZfaq..maybe because I’m a big Ivan B, Training Without Conflict fan.

very nice, interesting and educating interview. Thank you Robert and Flo. I'm from Switzerland and you're so right, they ban everything, slip leashes etc etc, So many tools are banned I even dont know what everything is banned. Its ridiculous how the positive only trainer in this country become more and more..

Unfortunately Australia is following Europe with the banning of training tools, they’ve already banned the import of prong collars and they’re banned from use in three of 9 states/territories of the mainland. I was waiting on money to buy a Herm Sprenger prong and only one month before I could buy one 😐 I ended up buying a locally made one and it works well but I’m really disappointed about not getting a Herm Sprenger one though. I get a lot of judgment for using a prong collar (I ended up getting a cover for it so it looks like a martingale) but I also got a ton of judgement for him lunging to meet people on a flat collar, I don’t have that issue on a prong 🤷🏻‍♀️ I have a bullmastiff/am staff mix who didn’t have good recall except when training in the backyard. I started doing what I call “Random Recall”. I started out inside the house and when he was on lead, I’d wait for him to be distracted or in another room and then call him, he now has really good recall that saved his life last week. I took him to the vet but couldn’t deal with the judgement I felt I’d get for using a prong so I used a martingale instead, when we were done I went to the pharmacy and while I was waiting I went out to take him to the toilet. We were on the sidewalk of an extremely busy street when he started bouncing around and the leash pulled out of my hand, he ran straight into the traffic, luckily the lane closest to me was empty. I screamed out his name and “come”, before I’d finished his name he’d already pivoted and started running at full speed to me. If he’d taken just one more step in the other direction he’d be dead, it would’ve put his head and neck under the wheel of the caravan that the SUV was pulling. He will definitely be wearing his prong collar wherever we go now and it’s thanks to you showing how to fit one and using Goofy’s collar on yourself, that I felt it’s ok to use one in the first place 👌🏽

Oh I love this podcast. I remember Annmarie Silverton. Does she still train dogs? I have all of her tapes. So I’m wondering does Flo have a KZfaq channel? I’d love to watch her perform.

I have a friend that just got a Cane Corso puppy. She is a dog trainer of the KMODT method. She picked up the puppy from breeder after doing temperament test. Picked the best puppy. So now the puppy is 5 months old. She has been under good daily strict training her whole life and looks like it will be a good dog. But as I watch her training progress I see this dog would walk over an owner that did not know what they where doing. I would not like a big that that.

I’m an average person, with a mutt rescue. Probably German Shepherd Husky Malamute according to the SPCA. I love the Rotti, Doberman and German Shepherd but since I’m not entering any contest I refuse to go to a breeder and have always rescued the unwanted dogs. I don’t think it’s helpful to make disparaging comments about rescues. I obviously disagree with backyard breeding but a lot of dogs in shelters are oops pregnancy or pregnant strays, or now maybe backyard breeders who can’t get rid of pups. Anyway, like the conversation but some of your followers might own a dog without pedigree and really, if you love dogs, you can find amazing dogs who are mutts . ❤️🐾My dog is amazing, smart and full of personality and I’m so lucky his stray mama blessed me with him!

Corso vary greatly. I have an IPO1 corso that is more for most smaller people to handle including my wife. She can walk her because her heel is perfect, but she cannot hold her tug without getting trampled. The corso constantly tests her, grabs her blanket off her while watching tv when im not there. So to tell people that Corso are easy dogs for small non dominant is probably wrong. Strong corso sense the energy of dominance in their leader, if its not there they will easily control. Breeders should know if their corso are docile and watered down or not.

@@Zinctwentyone all of mine are imports except the female I kept back from a breeding. It just depends on your level of experience with animals and knowledge of training.

It’s weird , in Canada the use of prongs and ecollar seems to Be becoming more acceptable by the general public … when I first got my ecollar 10 years ago no one had one and I got a lot of side eye .. now I see them everywhere. Hopefully it stays that way ! But you can’t even take your dog for a car ride for errands anymore . Doesn’t matter my AC is on and window cracked ppl still threatening to break windows when it’s 15C . My boy loves car rides but I can’t take him anymore 😢 hopefully ppl calm down soon.
