I really like the series, guys. It's good to include the clear explanations for non-firefighters. They are both exciting and educational for those who may become interested in the fire service. I share the concerns about standards like running on the fireground and using SCBAs in IDLH conditions. As videographers, you're not responsible for fireground safety, but I encourage you to ask the firefighters to talk on camera about safety and how safety concerns affect their methods and operations. Firefighting involves calculated risks, and some risks are not worth taking. That's a concept many bystanders will never realize.

NFPA simply stands for not for practical aplication. If guys choose to be smoke eaters hey he's a badass until he's 50 and he gets a tumor the size of texas. They are great at what they do. But they don't think of what comes later with breathing toxic smoke. SCBA wear it, not for just you but for the family you have at home

When I went through recruit school 8 years ago I did it. About a year on the job I realized that the space between the mask and rubber seal is a perfect place to put the flash hood. Doesn’t obstruct your view at all. Plus the masks are only rated to 500 degrees anyways.

@@igotJesus88 yeah, I know. I'm not sure why, but apparently it's a thing that they teach to do at the fire academy where I'm at. I'm going to be signing up for a County level course that will allow me to knock off a bunch of the requirements for FF1 which is followed by a state level course which will take care of most if not all of the rest of the requirements and whatever, if anything is left my dept. will cover in it's trainings. After that I'll be able to test out for FF1 "via challenge". Basically I do all 10 of the tasks that I'd have to know. Whereas if I went through the academy I'd have to know all 10, but would only have to do 5 of the 10 to pass. It covers all the same stuff, but means more hard labor at the end

Question: Why did Firefighter Tim Jones go up the ladder without protective gear? It doesn't seem a good thing to go sticking one's face in a smoking vent either. What if flames had decided to vent out the hole he had just created? He would be in a world of hurt. Just an observation and I'm wondering why he didn't put on his protective gear? Other than that...a nice and well documented video. You guys be safe out there!
@fcaramiello
@fcaramiello 9 жыл бұрын
Answer(s) [*In order*]: *To ventilate. *Smoking a full cigarette isn't a good thing, either. *Flames don't "decide" or make cognitive decisions as all. They are merely the visible portion of "the rapid oxidation of a material in the exothermic chemical process of combustion, releasing heat, light, and various reaction products", and subsequently become completely extinguished when the engine company introduces a volume of water to them. *We're all living a world of hurt, brother. *He had his protective gear donned. Thanks for enjoying the video, Edward. Be sure to stick around for the second season...

Love these videos but just have a question.. I'm curious about this, why don't most of the guys wear their waist straps on their SCBA packs? That means all of the weight is on their shoulders and like if they're in a fire it can burn them like the steam. P.S. I'm a junior firefighter and some of the guys from my dept. told me this.
@SlideDownSlow
@SlideDownSlow 10 жыл бұрын
You should connect all straps when wearing and SCBA. You should also wear the mask and be on air if you're going to be working a structure fire and in the smoke. These guys are a poor example of following standards set by the NFPA and Federal and State OSHA laws.
@LarryNoir
@LarryNoir 10 жыл бұрын
When you have been doing it for as long as a lot of the guys in this video have, there are certain things that you are gonna skip because you don't feel it necessary. Realistically, when you are on the fire ground, you aren't going to follow every single safety measure you learned in Firefighter 1.
@Phippsarts
@Phippsarts 10 жыл бұрын
I understand where you're coming from by saying that Larry but I feel that those rules and guidelines are put in place for a reason and that reason is to keep all of us firefighters safe. But I do understand where you're coming from. Also, I think that the straps not being buckled is just another obstical that you have to make sure it doesn't get caught on something inside a burning structure.
@dancorcoran9204

I see so much shit on these videos about SCBA and safety, yes i agree maybe he should have had his SCBA when venting from that ladder, but PG county, including Kentland 33 runs more working fire jobs a month than most of us will see in our careers. It's not you breathing in the smoke, its not you going into the building, its no one on your crew, i understand that as a member of the fire service we all need to make sure everyone comes home, but if I was ever on a fire ground and could choose a company to make sure I would make it home it would damn well be a PG county department.

+FirstDue Hey, man. Quick question: have you or your brothers ever sat around a bonfire with friends or family? You know, you probably sit there for a while enjoying some funny stories in comfortable clothes and having some drinks while not exerting yourself and such. Has a breeze ever shifted for a moment and blown smoke and maybe even a bit of ember towards you...perhaps blowing into or past your face/eyes/nose? If so, were you wearing your PPE and SCBA, or was being outside not enough of an IDLH atmosphere? Were you judged by folks not present for the bonfire event found out this happened to you? So, if the idea of the fire wasn't to cook food to survive, but only to get warm... ...and you didn't have PPE or and SCBA... ...and you might have been in normal civilian wear... ...and this all happened outside... ...why judge the professional that was wearing PPE after having sized up all sides of a building to have a look at what might be burning, where the fire may go, and quickly completed his task to greatly aid in saving someone's property? Maybe, your smoke couldn’t have a health risk just as his smoke could have? I do feel for all those affected by the plague that is “smoke bias”. I guess, to answer my own question: it's all a big mystery... Finally, if this hasn't happened to you at some form of a bonfire and that’s the route you’d like to take, then I have my suspicions as you may be the first person in human history attending such an event for this to not have happened to. May all your days be circus days, brother...

If you are going thorough the extrawork of having the tank on your back. Wear the facemask. Your municipality went to great expense to buy that equipment. Its like a cop not wearing their bulletproof vest, it will come to bite you. And when it does it puts the tax payers in expense. First off if you fall ill from the smoke inhalation or develop cancer the taxpayers will pay for your medical care, as it is an on the job injury. They will also have to pay for training of new personnel to replace you. As well as if you pass out from the smoke inhalation on scene it taxes crews to rescue you. Use the equipment, its there to save your life and thise around you.

Cool concept for the video series but come on guys. lets follow some industry standards. the NFPA exists for a reason. At least use that PPE on your back when working in a structure or laddering to vent the gable end of the house. Certainly don't stick your head in the vent. You guys have Junior Firefighters commenting asking why they are seeing you guys breaking rules that they have been taught to follow. Life Safety is number one. That means your life. I've been in the volunteer fire service since 1996 and am a EHS Manager in Private Industry. You guys are going to get someone seriously hurt or killed and you're just documenting your negligence here on youtube. Go a head and try to bust my balls. I've been in a Firefighter funeral of a fallen firefighter...its not fun. This isn't Ladder 49 or Backdraft.

Thanks for the comment. We understand where you are coming from. Now, you need to understand that we aren't members of these departments. We are a docu-reality film crew following these departments as they go through their calls. What you see is how they operate. We do not script, direct or dictate how they operate. If you have a problem with the way they operate, I'm sure either department would love to see an application from you, so you can start your version of forward progress within their department. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for clarification. The article that pointed your series out made it sound like you were in fact members of the departments in the series that were trying to start a web series. Your explanation proves different. Now you are just a company that is promoting false info and putting real firefighters in a poor light. Thanks guys. PS I'm sure the guys in this video have watched themselves several times. I hope my feedback makes them think a little about the fact of wearing their PPE
@fcaramiello

SlideDownSlow I know that you hope your feedback makes the folks in the video think a little about “the fact of wearing their PPE” (whatever “the fact of wearing PPE” means), but in reality, your feedback probably just makes everyone reading it angry. I mean, with 17 plus years of volunteering and industrializing privately, you apparently still haven't learned much tact. I'm sure you stand with strong convictions as do most people who go on KZfaq tirades, but perhaps your definition of 'negligence' might differ from others'. In my opinion, I feel that you’re blowing this whole thing far out of proportion. You seem borderline irate. Perhaps some lavender rub and a nice bubble bath might relax you. Furthermore, you’re certainly entitled to your opinion. That’s the beauty of this. As I've said in posts before, if you or your people don’t like what you’re seeing and it upsets you this much, you aren't obligated to watch it. I assume you don’t walk around all day in this fired up mode that your words seem to hint that you’re in, so maybe it’s not for you? If it’s confusing your junior firemen, why not turn off KZfaq and put Backdraft on pause to go out teach them something yourself. Surely, you've got something that might be valid to pass along to them…

SlideDownSlow you are a sorry excuse of a firefighter if you even are one. Welcome to firefighting in all of Maryland not just PG County, we don't stand in the front yard and hold the homeowners hand while there home burns to the ground. If your that worried about YOUR life you have no business being involved in saving someone else's life. No firefighter wakes up wanting to die but if you ask any true Firefighter if he would be willing to give his life at any moment for one of his brothers or a Random Civilian no matter what because ITS OUR JOB, ITS WHATS ASKED OF YOU WHEN YOU SIGN THE DOTTED LINE. The simple fact behind not wearing waist straps is one when your as good as we are at fighting fire in the entire state of Maryland your not wearing it for more than 30-45 minutes and two all of us come prepared with numerous tools that we will use while operating inside which we carry in our coat pockets and those waist straps make it difficult to access your pockets. As for wearing masks we tend not too go on air while operating outside where fresh air is normally less than a foot away so that we will have a full tank of air if were called inside where it is really needed. Im sure at a later season you will watch and complain that Bladensburg isn't wearing their seatbelts while responding, that is because instead of wasting 2 minutes getting dressed in the firehouse or when arriving on scene they and every other Company in PG County and the State of Maryland get dressed while enroute to be faster and more efficient, im sure your safety sam ass watched the FDIC video comparing the 1980's home construction and contents to modern times, the fact of the matter is that 2 minutes that your shaving off getting dressed enroute allows us to go inside and save the house and when your department pulls up the house is on the ground, in Maryland we do work and we put the public before us because we are real firefighters and have the right mentality.

Hunter, I'm sorry but I disagree with a lot of your reasoning for not following industry standards. I too am concerned more about my life than that of the public, which doesn't mean that I don't risk a lot to save a lot, it just means that I try to do my best to protect myself from danger, like wearing a pack in an obvious IDLH. I would think the State that is home to the National Fire Academy, would be more forward thinking, and not have the "I'm too tough to wear gear" attitude. And yes, I have experience, and yes, I am not perfect.

Waist straps, sometimes people forget in the heat of the moment. If you tell me you've never forgotten, then ill find you a liar. Secondly PG(kentland&the burg) only use 1-1/2" so imagine that friction loss. Thirdly all you people talking about osha, NFPA, and all those other acronyms...need to get your head out of your asses. The tower driver was doing his job, and if you look closely when he first climbed that ladder there wasnt that much smoke coming out. and the fire was knocked, so all of that was just trapped smoke. but i guess your safe at home behind your computer watching this, when was the last fire you went to? cause im pretty sure these guys do it more than you.

Fire was knocked? Son, you better watch it again! This is coming from a 28 ear career FF in a small city FD........

FirstDue ah i guess with your 28 years of experience you obviously have the vision to know what is happening on a computer screen thousands of miles away and you can automatically tell me what is happening. I however was on this fire, and i was there so let me break it down. the fire was knocked with a water can from Co.33's tower roughly around the time truck9 and the ITS crew arrived on scene, not only to mention that immediately after the fire was knocked Engine Co.28 had a line in the attic. So again ill tell you...the fire was knocked, and this was residual smoke coming out of the attic.but thanks for giving me your 28 years experience. Also i'm curious...why does it matter that your a 28 year career firefighter. I have a feeling that subconsciously you are trying to make yourself seem more knowledgeable and better than others because you get paid. Tid bit of advice, to sound more professional, next time just say you've been doing it for 28 years, or 'This coming from a firefighter with 28 years experience in a small city FD' has a better ring to it, don't ya think.

stuka670 Come on now. With his 28 years of career experience in a small city he will obviously know it all and especially more than some lowly volunteer...... Sarcasm by the way. I laugh at people who feel the need to throw around how many years experience they have on youtube.

freddysee33 You're right. He doesn't get why you're not using your safety equipment designed to protect you. Afterall, only the best professional firefighters laugh at the thought of using SCBA. Yeah....he's the stupid one....

There seems to be a lot of bashing going on here from more than a few armchair fire chiefs. Fact is, this is a small fire in an attic that required no rush or fuss to put out. For all you wanna be safety chiefs, there's absolutely no reason to mask up and waste air on the lower floors at a job like this if there isn't any smoke or heat. Pros know this, and even though I'm no fan of volunteer fire depts, these guys conducted themselves like gentleman and got the job done in short order. Get a grip.

I can't understand for the life of me why guys out east pule their homes half way over their mask. Why limit your visibility on purpose when its already going to be limited from the smoke.

No reaason preaching NFPA when there isnt a single solitary FD in the country that follows EVERY NFPA reg. Better off using OSHA.

The whole point of having a volunteer crew is because a city doesn't have the funds to only have career members. You need to be more appreciative.
