Hudson used a unique low pressure splash oiling system. Pump only put out 5 or 6 PSI. It fed oil to troughs under each connecting rod. As the crankshaft rotated, the scoops on the rods would scoop up oil into the rod bearings and throw oil around inside the crankcase. Oil would run down the side of the engine where it was channeled into the main bearings, cams etc. The cylinders are very close together with no coolant passages in between. This means uneven cooling which is why the rings are pinned in place. You can see that you can't bore the cylinders very far because of the thin metal between the cylinders. Hudson made an extremely simple, light, and short six cylinder engine. It looks like it shouldn't work but in normal use they worked very well. The English Railton company made some fine performing cars on thirties Hudson chassis. Another thing that worked far better than anyone would think, was the cork lined oil bath clutch. An important point for Australia is that they were free of asbestos and can be relined with wine bottle corks or bottle corks from the hardware store.
@unclebrentsshed42537 ай бұрын
Pretty impressive don’t you agree , l love the simplicity of everything about it 👌🏽
@timmcooper2947 ай бұрын
Remember that this engine started out with much smaller bores in 1924, they later siamesed them to get the most bore they could as the engine was updated. Pinned rings had nothing to do with "uneven cooling" Pinned rings were a Hudson tradition through most of their history. I'm no Hudson expert, but I've been around the cars a long time and think they are really neat. Some of their goofy features and odd engineering is what makes them fun!
@robertward87947 ай бұрын
It wasn't a unique to Hudson oiling system, splash lubrication was used by nearly all of the major and minor US auto makers until the early/mid 1950s. Most of the European makers had moved from splash to full pressure feed by the mid 1930s.
@mrdanforth37447 ай бұрын

Yes I agree , it’s not a show room restoration
@mrdanforth37447 ай бұрын
You need to be careful. The siamesed cylinders leads to uneven cooling and distortion. This is why they pinned the rings in the first place. This worked better than you might think. Hudson had a unique approach to a lot of things that make you go "What???" but they worked. Make any changes at your peril. This engine might work well in a light speedster or roadster type fun car if you can find a Hudson clutch and gearbox and a suitable chassis. The Hudson six was rated 16.9 taxable HP which was quite low for a six cylinder car. They were hard to beat in their day if you wanted an economical, smooth running roomy family car.

Very quick and easy although you need a machinist who knows what they are doing for interference fit and who won't dick you around. Did you notice the old rings you showed they were inline and not offset !? Very strange. As a Diesel Fitter myself and doing some old gear restoration (Tractors and Dozers) for fellas also use to hand scrape white metal bearings just like you showed in latest YT.. 1936 Terraplane six was rated 21.6 taxable HP but developed 88HP. There isn't anything you can do to increase HP except maybe mill the head for more compression. The usual hop up tricks like boring stroking shaving the flywheel won't work and things like hot cams dual carbs and headers are not available. On the good side they are a very light compact engine and will give good performance in stock form in a light car. The English Railton company made a Hudson Terraplane based sports car with a claimed 8.8 second 0-60 time which was dynamite for the mid 30s.

I watched your last post on this engine . Considering it age , laying on it's side outside , & all of the water in it , I'm not surprised at the losses . Still , it has a number really cool design features . You also have most of the pistons , & valves . The cylinders looked better than I thought they would . With running & time , the rings will erase the pitting in them . Not much of a ridge ring in the top of them either . Good looking bearings with shim stacks , means they have plenty of life left . Soak the good pistons in trans fluid , warm them up from time to time , & tap them with a soft hammer , small dead-blow , plastic . The rings will free up in time , which it sounds like you are going to have , between day jobs , & part replacements . Hopefully , your project will attract the notice of those who can help you find the resources . I have no doubt it will run again , if you have all of the parts back in , & in good order . Any pistons you use , will have to match in weight , for best results . I'd definitely be cleaning the block up , & checking for cracks , before putting in much more time & expense of restoration . I'm guessing that oil pump pushes oil to the top oil channels , where it gravity flows down to all of the cam & crank bearings , plus out the front for timing gears , dumping down to the upper crank pan galleys for the rods to pick up in the scoopers . It must have done well enough , the bearings look fine . Best of luck to you !

So cool to see you reviving this old girl. Believe it or not, this basic engine began in 1924 at about 130 cu. in. in the Essex, growing in displacement thru the late 1920's and early 1930's when the Terraplane series was introduced. Yours appears to be the 212 cu. in. version (the largest six in the series) The straight 8 Hudson was a stretched variant. Note how narrow the space between the bores is! Pinned rings was a standard Hudson feature throughout their history and not great. The earlier years in this engine series had roller cam / lifter setup, Depression era cost cutting did away with that. Even in 1924 , most mid class and better cars had gone to full pressure oiling, but the old Hudson splasher setup works quite well. These are neat engines and run / sound really good for what they are!

Thank you for the resurrection video! Keep in mind the long production life of this engine family when searching for bits. Things did change along the way, like the lifters, early engines were roller cams, with a timing chain, then went to the rather interesting "shoe" setup you have to save cost during the depression. Hudson introduced these in the Essex in 1924 as the "junior" version of its big sixes in the big Hudson cars of the Twenties. The bigger sixes used insert bearings (yes, in the twenties!) and four main bearings on a massively counterbalanced crankshaft, but this little engine did just fine with three. Lots of parts on this engine interchange with the 254 cu. in straight eights that were made up into the early 1950's. Thankfully there is a strong enthusiast / club support for Hudson / Essex / Terraplane, so finding the little bits needed shouldn't be too tough. @@unclebrentsshed4253

I love the idea of getting this thing going again, but I think you will have to start looking at side valve stuff for compatible parts. The side valves normally had longer valve stems and the pistons were more like what you are after. My BSA M20 motorcycle ( 500cc side valve single ) had a bore of 3.2" as standard with a large deck height like those things and the extra oil control ring at the bottom, so you might want to start looking at motorcycle stuff too. As for the valve guides, after finding appropriate valves you could machine some bronze guides to suit the new stem diameter if it is different.

Highly engaged in your project... wondering about the nature of those lower piston rings... perhaps they were intended to created positive internal crankcase pressure on the engine oil to help circulate what appears to be a very ''passive'' oil pump set up.
@unclebrentsshed42537 ай бұрын
There’s also a vertical slit in the side of the pistons , possibly to cool that side of the cylinder , then the lower oil ring is possibly to control the oil ???
@mrdanforth37447 ай бұрын
Lower rings were oil rings. They control oil supply to the piston. Later engines with improved piston rings, did away with the 4th ring. Racing engines left them off to reduce friction, at the cost of extra oil burning.
@webtoedman7 ай бұрын
The slots are intended to reduce expansion on the diameter when the piston is at working temperature, while allowing smaller clearences when cold - an awful lot of effort to prevent piston slap on start up. It weakens the piston, but was considered acceptable on low output, low revving engines. @@unclebrentsshed4253

It wouldn't be too difficult to convert that to pressurized oiling. Fill the main gutter with molten aluminum or powdered aluminum and epoxy snd drill and tap it.then run steel lines from the pump, the same with the cam bearings , as for the main snd rod bearings. Id at most remove some of the shim. Then bore them to size with oil clearance. And polish the rods, only removing .002" or so very minimal. Just enough to get them smooth, removing stress risers. Possibly drill the crank for rod bearing lubrication. Definitely add zddp to the oil. We dont make oil for engibes like this anymore. Maybe get some liquimoly oil or additive. And drill tiny holes to the cam lobes. And set up the lifter area. To be an oil bath. Keeping it nearly full of oil. It could have miltiple oilers to the cam. With pressure feeding the cam bearings. Look into getting a custom tool steel cam ground. Machine adapters with brass bushings to allow the use of chevy or 3.8 buick 3800 roller lifters. Maybe more lift than the buick would have had. Probably modify the roller lifters to have adjusters. Be solid no longer hydraulic this will likely allow slightly shorter valves. Allowing replacement dodge valves to be modified and used. It could be a s interesting project..

The stock setup worked fine. Hudson believed in the splash system, they published a list of 10 advantages it has over the pressure system. For typical thirties type driving it worked well, only when superhiways came along in the fifties did higher engine speeds make it obsolete.
@unclebrentsshed42537 ай бұрын
Pressure feeding the cam would be super easy , pressurising the main is possible but would take some work . Rod journals would be impossible because of the 3 main bearing design .
@WebbSummers7 ай бұрын
Pressure oiling doesn’t work well on 3 main bearing sixes. As the engine ages and rod bearing clearances increase, the no.2 and no.5 can fail because they are too far away from the oil source. No. 1 and no. 3 will throw so much oil that no. 2 will starve. Nash found this out when the tried to go to pressure on their 3 main six. They went to 7 main sixes and nine main eights
