In this episode, Sh. Omar Suleiman goes over a narration that gives us insight into some do’s and don’ts of du’a, especially about praying for patience.
[ Day 20 Du'a ]
Mu`adh bin Jabal narrated that the Prophet heard a man supplicating, saying: “O Allah! Verily, I ask You for the bounty’s completion (Allāhumma, innī as’aluka tamāman-ni`mah).” So he said: “What thing is the bounty’s completion?” He said: “A supplication that I made, that I hope for good by it.” He said: “Indeed, part of the bounty’s completion is the entrance into Paradise, and salvation from the Fire.” And he heard a man while he was saying: “O Possessor of Majesty and Honor (Yā Dhal-Jalāli wal- Ikrām)” So he said: “You have been responded to, so ask.” And the Prophet heard a man while he was saying: “O Allah, indeed, I ask You for patience (Allāhumma, innī as’alukaṣ-ṣabr)” He said: “You have asked Allah for trial, so ask him for Al-`Āfiyah.”

FOR THOSE CONFUSED. This Hadith has been reported to be weak. We have the QURAN, which gives us the answer and dua SubhanAllah. . Rabbanaa Afrigh Alaynaa Sabraw wa Thabbit Aqdaamanaa wan Surnaa alal Qawmil Kaafireen (Al Baqarah 250) “Our Lord! Pour forth on us patience, and set firm our feet and make us victorious over the disbelieving people.”

the key here is dat wen u ask for patience (sabr) u are endorsing the hardship u are going thru but wen ask for ease from the hardship , u automatically excersice patience (sabr) as a result of ur faith that ur dua has being answered...... so patience is an attribute expressed by faith not a quality in itself ........ Remember hadith 40 of Qudsi ....Allah said: I am as my servant thinks I am. I didnt know this myself until I watched this video . This video has been helpful So ask for ease and not hardship.

In short, "Sabr/Patience" to be only exercised/exhibited in all the situations but never to be asked for as it brings trails & hardships; this life is already a test trial then why to ask for unnecessary test? It's always best to ask Allah for ease/aafiyah in every situation and practice sabr/patience......Win-Win approach!!!

This makes sense. It depends on the situation and the context in which you’re asking for patience. When in hardship or a difficult situation, ask for ease and mercy, but if you are just praying for yourself in general, you can ask Allah to make you among the sabireen or grant you the quality of a patient person.

Assalaamu alaykum, From what I understand about this hadith, it perfectly demonstrates the practical application of sabr. Like the question most would want to know the answer for is, how to be patient, what qualifies as being patient.. And here, Rasoolullah s.a.w says, asking Allah for ease generally and during a trail is better, than asking of patience in itself, from which I understand that connecting with Allah at all circumstances and especially during times of trials and tribulations is what is sabr is all about! Sabr is asking Allah for help and ease during difficult moments. Sabr is asking Allah for forgiveness during trials. And basically sabr is strengthening our relationship with Allah during hardships. This is what I understand from this, and yeah I might be wrong.. Alhamduillah and Jazaak Allahu khiren for these beneficial videos!

Praise be to Allah. Firstly: The hadeeth mentioned was narrated by at-Tirmidhi (3527) via Abu’l-Ward from al-Lajlaaj from Mu‘aadh ibn Jabal who said: The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) heard a man saying: O Allah, I ask You for patience. He said: “You have asked Allah for calamity; rather ask Him for well-being.” This is a da‘eef (weak) hadeeth. It was quoted by al-Albaani in ad-Da‘eefah (4520) and he said: There is some weakness in this isnaad. Abu’l-Ward is ibn Thumaamah ibn Hazn al-Qushayri, whom no one regarded as trustworthy. Al-Haafiz said: His reports may be accepted if there is corroborating evidence. End quote. Al-Qaari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The argument here has to do with praying for patience before calamity strikes; however after calamity strikes, there is no reason not to ask for patience; rather it is mustahabb, because Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning): “Our Lord! Pour forth on us patience” [al-Baqarah 2:250]. That is because asking for patience should only come after the calamity has befallen or the disaster has struck, or any situation in which a person needs to be patient. In that case it is prescribed for him to ask Allah for patience. Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning): “And when they advanced to meet Jaloot (Goliath) and his forces, they invoked: Our Lord! Pour forth on us patience and make us victorious over the disbelieving people. So they routed them by Allah’s Leave” [al-Baqarah 2:250-251]. And Allah, may He be exalted, said concerning the sorcerers of Pharaoh (interpretation of the meaning): “They said: Verily, we are returning to our Lord. And you take vengeance on us only because we believed in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.) of our Lord when they reached us! Our Lord! pour out on us patience, and cause us to die as Muslims” [al-A‘raaf 7:125, 126]. But when one is in a state of well-being, it is appropriate to ask Allah to complete His blessing, and to grant well-being and protection. Secondly: There is nothing wrong, in sha Allah, with a person asking his Lord for patience, restricting that to calamity if it should happen, or if something should occur that requires patience. It is quite natural that man’s life should not be free of trials and tribulations in which he needs to be patient and to call upon Allah. Hence one of the supplications of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was: “O Allaah, by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over creation, keep me alive so long as You know that living is good for me and cause me to die when You know that death is better for me. O Allaah, cause me to fear You in secret and in public. I ask You to make me true in speech in times of pleasure and of anger. I ask You to make me moderate in time of wealth and of poverty. And I ask You for everlasting delight and joy that will never cease. I ask You to make me pleased with that which You have decreed and for an easy life after death. I ask You for the sweetness of looking upon Your face and a longing to meet You in a manner that does not entail a calamity that will bring about harm or a trial that will cause deviation. O Allaah, beautify us with the adornment of faith and make us among those who guide and are rightly guided.” Narrated by an-Nasaa‘i, 1305; Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami‘, no. 1301. He asked Allah, may He be exalted, to bless him with contentment with that which He decreed. It is clear that what this means is a decree that one dislikes, otherwise everyone is pleased and content with that which he likes and which suits him. But this does not mean that this is a du‘aa’ that something disliked be decreed, just as the other du‘aa’ - in the same hadeeth - does not mean that one is asking for poverty or death. Thirdly: The fact that your son is quick to get angry is a matter concerning which it is appropriate to pray for patience. The one who is quick to get angry will react to the slightest annoyance and panic at any problem; undoubtedly he is the one who is most in need of praying for peace of mind, patience, calmness and a good attitude. Therefore this does not come under the heading of praying for calamity or seeking to hasten it; rather this is a prayer for the best remedy for him from the problem he is faced with. And Allah knows best.

Assalamualaikum, dear brother omar pardon my question, how does the hadith of not asking for sabr understood in relation to the verse albaqarah (2):250 when the believers prayed for sabr in facing Jalut? Or is this a different situation as the danger they face were imminent? Or does the prophet peace and blessings be upon him mean if we are in difficulty it is only better to pray for ease? I have been taught a dua which contains the verse... "allahummaja'lna ssobura... " is there a hadith for this prayer or is this recommended? Thank you in advanced for your advice, wasalam.

asalamalkum, making duah for patience should only come after the calamity has befallen or the disaster has happened, or in a sitatuion a person would need patience (which is the context of those verses). This hadith indicates that if theres no reason to pray for patience then its better to pray for generel well being, as Allah might accept your duah by sending a trial your way so that you can show patience (basicaly what the prophet (as) explains in this hadith).

Can you ask Allah SWT to grant you qualities like sabrun jamil? I asked in dua often, now I am not so sure.

I don't ask for patience during hardship or before hardship has befallen me . However I always ask for patience in my duas in general . As in having a cool head in situations where people may get angry. So essentially having a good temperament. Can someone please explain if this is okay . JazakAllah

According to the hadeeth and video, it is better to replace all the your duas asking for sabr by duas asking for aafiyah (wellbeing in all aspects, in this life and the next). But you should practise sabr instead.

im confused. I’m an 18 year old girl living in the west and am nowhere near ready to get married (although Allah is the best of planners). I have been trying my best to ignore the influence of people around me, in haram relationships etc, and have been praying to Allah to give me sabr - until I am married. Is this wrong?

Maureen H Maybe you you should pray to keep your emaan high, to keep you away from haram, and start praying for your husband when it’s the right timing.

I think from this advice of the video, we should be asking for ease in situations and yours would apply. I have been asking Allah to make me a person of patience (the characteristic) but within a trial, we should ask for ease.

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته I’m not a scholar but one of the great scholars of hadeeth (Al-Albaani) has said the hadeeth mentioned in the video is not authentic in his Da’eef Adab al-Mufrad. As mentioned in some of the comments below the Qur’aan mentions du’aas asking for patience eg Rabbanaa afrigh ‘alaynaa sabran wa tawaffanaa muslimeen, O Allaah pour out patience upon us and cause us to die as Muslims (Sooratul-A’raaf, aayah 126). Allaah knows best

IslamQA: "The hadeeth mentioned was narrated by at-Tirmidhi (3527) via Abu’l-Ward from al-Lajlaaj from Mu‘aadh ibn Jabal who said: The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) heard a man saying: O Allah, I ask You for patience. End quote. " I don't intend to undermine the brother, but we must be careful about where we get our sources from. And Allah knows best

I am unable to understand this hadeeth; please elaborate the context of "don't ask for endurance/patience (sabar)" In sura baqara ayah 250, there is a supplication for sabar "And when they were facing Goliath and his hordes they prayed: O Lord give us endurance (sabar) and steady our steps, and help us against the deniers of truth" How is asking for sabar in this ayah different from the hadeeth ? I am confused .....Can anyone help me?

Alia Mushtaq when you ask sabr before problems that clearly means whatever problems are coming you want patience until it dissolve but if you ask aafiyah that means you want ease from problems .

@@alviyaakbani8408 thanku for clarification. Though the most pressing question for me is that the people, the Quran mentioned in the ayah, were asking Allah to grant them sabar in the face of the difficulty, so were they wrong in asking for sabar or is there a situational context in can or cannot (rather should not) ask for sabar from Allah Subhana Hu wa Talla
