Sight hounds are the best. My next dog is going to be a Silken. After having a scent hound (basset hound)* mixed. I’m curious to experience the difference. P.s. She’s not lazy like a typical basset but MAN her nose drives her like no tomorrow. Recall doesn’t exist. - also bc I rescued her at 4 yrs old so that could play a part. ❤

This is adorable😭this is honestly my favorite breed of dog along with border and scotch collies. Most collies honestly lol. Also greyhounds- but these guys are basically the gracefulness of a greyhound with the same build but the same energy of a collie and the same coat as a collie. The mix of two of my favorite breeds. So freaking adorable. Love it

We have a jack russell/Rat terrier mix, he's a senior, but he still acts like a puppy, super high energy We recently got a Borzoi puppy, her name is Integra, and they get along well, but I swear, after she's done her walks and 30 minutes of play, and Buddy(our senior) still wants to play with her... If she could give him the middle finger she would....

Hello Jacob, thank you so much for your videos! I'll (very likely) be starting to raise a Borzoi puppy in about 2 months - already talked with and visited the breeder, puppies are now 2 weeks old - and I'm trying to to consume as much information about raising a dog properly, and specifically how to raise a Borzoi correctly, as I want to provide him with the best care :) My question after watching this video is - how well do you think a single person living alone in a mid-sized apartment (60m~ with a rather big balcony) can care for a Borzoi in terms of its activity and routine? It seems like you've taken awesome care of your dogs, but the schedule you described here is possible thanks to at least one of you being available to your dogs at all times. If I leave home at roughly 7:20am and come back around 2-3pm (I'm a teacher, so at least not working until the evening), do you think it's still possible to care for a Borzoi in a fair and responsible way? Maybe also important to note I work four days a week, so roughly half the week I *am* completely available. but it still doesn't allow a consistent every-day schedule like you described. Do you think taking the dog for a 15-30 minute walk in the morning, then a longer 1-2h combo of walk / light running / dog-park-off-leash-running in the afternoon, and another short walk at night is okay in terms of activity? And can take the dog for some hikes or fields in the weekend :) Also - I've read that while they're puppies "A puppy needs unlimited amounts of free exercise", that to grow properly they need a fenced yard to run as much as they like - do I hurt a Borzoi puppy if I can't provide him with that? It may sound silly to be this specific, but after reading about Borzoi's physical activity needs and hearing so many differing opinions - from some saying that it's okay to just walk 60 minutes a day with the occasional weekend run and that they are perfectly fine in an apartment setting, and others insisting that the Borzoi need to have the opportunity to sprint and run off-leash every day and have an available fenced area - I've become confused about what's the proper care for them. Thank you!

Wow, great question. Ill do my best to answer you based on my experience, though I’m not an expert (your breeder might even be able to shed some light as well). When we got Ora I was living in an apartment no bigger than you described. As a very young puppy, exercise needs are not that important and actually doing too much activity can hurt them (this is especially true with taking them outside before their shots - parvo especially a good rule of thumb is 5 minutes of exercise, twice a day, for each month of age. They are growing SO FAST). These needs change rapidly as they get older, and since I did not have a yard we used a nearby dog park to get in her off leash time. Borzois seem to have three modes of exercise, and if they are not drained ( as pup) they’ll be crazy in the house 1. ZOOMIES - crazy off leash play, usually 5-10 mins of total freak out 2. Distance / exhaustion cardio - this is your walks, runs, jogs 3. MENTAL - they have to be challenged mentally (puzzles, etc…) If you’ve a fulfill these they are generally very happy and will chill out in your house. My biggest worry for your situation is the time you are away those 4 days. When I was in LA my work was very fluid, often times working in the afternoons and my wife worked in the mornings. So Ora would only be alone from 2-3 hours 3-4 times a week. Because of this we crate trained her right off the bat, and with diligence it worked. It will be difficult for you to do this alone, I’m not saying impossible, puppies are a lot of work and will Depend on the individual dogs temperament - this is why you get such mixed opinions! Ora was so difficult, Esper was so easy. a lot of a pups temperament can be spotted early so talk to your breeder about getting a dog that seems a little more mellow. There are also some other options to help, either using a puppy daycare OR a service like trusted Housesitters ( I HIGHLY recommend them, it’s an app, cheap yearly fee, links you up with pet sitters in your area, guaranteed background checks), or if you know someone that can come by during your time away. I hope this helps!

@@esperborzoi Wow, thank you for the detailed and super-quick response! I really appreciate it. You've actually calmed my worries about the level of activity required. I've just read about cases of so-called "apartment borzois" that don't get enough exercise and grow up extra-thin, which I don't want to cause obviously, but I also know that some people who live in apartments do manage to raise their Borzois properly... I have multiple dog parks nearby, so I will be able to do what you've described and provide these zoomies and off-leash opportunities daily. I have also already watched a previous video of yours where you mentioned the puzzles, and already added them yesterday to my purchase-list of items I need to have before I bring the Borzoi home :) so thanks for that tip as well. Will definitely also speak with the breeder again (although she already knows that I live alone in an apartment and seemed okay with this, but I will ask her more questions), and check dog housesitting options. I'm not from the US/Canada, so I hope there are trusted options here for that sort of thing. In any case, I live in a neighborhood with a ton of friends and hopefully will be able to occasionally also use their help, but yeah, I might need something reliable that I pay for until the dog's trained to stay alone during my work-day. Again, thank you!

Thanks for your videos, they are helpful. I would like to add a borzoi to my pack of bulldogs but I do not really know if borzois are ok with other dogs that are not borzois. Did you have any experience in borzois living with other dog breeds. Bulldogs can play rough sometimes and I do not know how a borzoi would react.
@esperborzoi
@esperborzoi 3 жыл бұрын
Esper lived with a couple of different dogs as her PACK throughout the years, including a grumpy little terrier mutt, and a Pomeranian, and had no problem. I do worry about the rough playing, that's one thing, especially at dog parks, I try to stay clear of. However, Ora (our puppy) loves to get down and dirty and play a little more rough and tumble. I think it would be a matter of socialization between the dogs and their ages when you got them.

Last night I dreamt that I owned a Borzoi and as I went to take her for a walk, she leaped over my 4ft fence and was off; but the lead was very long, which I managed to cling onto. I had saved the day from my worst nightmare. Now I'm fascinated about the breed. Should I own one? The thing is, I'm a very playful person, like a big kid, especially with my dog Kelly. Am I right for a Borzoi?

That's a great question, best thing to do is meet one, you'll know! or meet other sighthounds and see if you like their vibe - they can be very chill and aloof, that said I am a GIGANTIC kid.

How long is it before you can take them on long walks? Our Deerhounds are restricted till about a year old with their exercise as being large slow maturing breeds their bones were not ready for alot of exercise and could actually cause bone plates to misalign
@esperborzoi
@esperborzoi 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question, for Ora it was definitely less than a year. I know in the first 3.5 /4 months we limited her greatly, simply because borzois (probably like deerhound) are growing about 1 inch a week. After that we did short walks, getting progressively longer as she grew stronger, but really limiting anything too vigorous.

Why does the puppy need to be in a crate ? Is it bc she’d wreck the house otherwise ? It seems like when she gets older, that she won’t be crated. So maybe she’s happy with it. (Like babies stay in cribs and play pens, so I can get that logic).
@anjelica948
@anjelica948 Ай бұрын
Its always a good idea to crate train a dog, large or small, bc if there is ever a natural disaster, or if the dog needs to be transported somewhere, having them already trained to a crate makes them much less likely to be distressed. In the case of a natural disaster- many shelters will refuse to allow pets inside, unless they are in their crates, so the odds of not having to leave them behind go up. Second, sometimes with anxious dogs, having them trained to a crate, gives them a space they can go where they feel safe and allows them to destress calmly. This is also great if you have a dog that has separation anxiety, bc then if/when you leave, they have a place where they feel safe, and cannot cause destruction in your home. Having a dog trained to a crate also helps if they have to stay long term at a vet, being boarded, or even at the groomers. It tends to make all new and unfamiliar experiences both easier, safer, and less stressful for your pet.
