Rob Sheffield from Rolling Stone Magazine recently wrote a 15,000 word excellent article on his choices for the Top 100 Solo Beatles Songs of All Time. Surprise Surprise - Paul wins with 33 entries, John 30, George 24, Ringo 13.
What Macca Tracks made the cut? We discuss. And some of the other tracks by the others.

Great show, Tom & Andy! I was very surprised to see Rolling Stone rate Paul at # 1 (and not John) based on their John biased history.

The Buffet tribute looks amazing. The older I get the less I care about the Rolling Stone rankings. I mean With A Little Luck and Listen to What the Man Said in the 90’s and both #1 songs for Wings..wow😮. I agree with Tom, not a fan of “I Dig Love” by George”. Love “Pure Smokey” but #10 wow!

Not trying to spoil anything based on the podcast version. But nice job, gentlemen, of maintaining a good pace when analyzing such a long list. And just the right amount of reminders that this is just Rob’s opinion and nothing to stress about. I’ve always said that Sheffield’s writing is “alive,” in the sense that it respects the cultural importance of certain music but ultimately understands that our relationship with particular songs is personal and prone to idiosyncratic reactions. We’re trained, to an extent, by critics and other sources at young ages to revere specific songs/albums. But when listening for pleasure, we like what we like. Other folks have rightly said that having a Paul song in the top spot would’ve never happened during the classic “Wenner” days of Rolling Stone. Yet I think an even more interesting shift is how the publication has moved away from trying to school its readers regarding the supposed “best” in rock and using an impersonal authoritative voice for these lists. The same brand that once seemed so focused on its super-serious anointings of things as “the greatest” has gone in the opposite direction and let Sheffield essentially say, “Making lists and arguing about them---not to mention listening to all of these songs-are just great ways to have fun.” He writes, “it took decades for ‘Too Many People’-and the rest of Ram-to get recognized as genius.” Yes, but that’s largely because the exact same magazine trashed the album upon release and programed us to accept that opinion as gospel with no room for debate. It’s all quite a change in approach. If you haven’t read Sheffield’s Beatles book, it has a great chapter called “Paul is a Concept by Which We Measure Our Pain.” It’s a smart take on how McCartney was viewed by fans and the press across generations and an impressive example of Sheffield laying out his biases and challenging them. He’d be a great guest. Good luck!

Rolling Stone should do what you guys did and do a list ranking 100 songs by Paul solo only. It makes no sense to rank them all together when Paul has 5x 100.

I think it is difficult to compare The Beatles solo careers e.g. John Lennon was mainly active in 1969-1975 and 1980, and George Harrison also had big gaps between his albums before and after "Cloud Nine" (1987) album. When Paul McCartney has released 26 studio albums in 1970-2020, how to compare his songs from "Egypt Station" (2018), "Memory Almost Full" (2007), "Flaming Pie" (1997), "Tug of War" (1982) or "Band on the Run" (1973)?

It is a good list but C'mon, no Wanderlust, no Cold Turkey, no Someplace Else, no My Brave Face, no No More Lonely Nights? Wtf!

Rob Sheffield is such a strange writer ✍️ in the Beatles world 🌍. In his book he wrote that Paul wrote My Love because he was jealous of George’s song Something. Paul had no reason to be jealous of George when he himself wrote classic love songs such as Here, there and everywhere. I’m surprised of all the Flowers in the dirt songs Rob only chose Put it there. I put Distractions, We got married and this one in my top 🔝 40. I would add Someplace else and just for today by George. Scared is a John song that belongs on a list like this. A lot of Ringo songs I would add to this: Time, Weight of the World, In Liverpool, Free Drinks 🍺, I’ll still love you, Wreck my brain, Eye to eye 👁️, Walk with you.

Interestingly list. Lots of as you said “demos and B sides”. Seems a balance of new songs and old. Definitely he loves All things must pass album! Some interesting Ringo’s songs. I also like Liverpool 8 and his vertical man album.

Eh..Maybe I'm Amazed (studio?). If this was UK Rolling Stone it would have been Mull. Yeah - Beautiful Night, Ebony and Ivory, Say Say Say or No More Lonely Nights would have been top #1s.

At last and for once 'Imagine' gets a more accurate placement. It never was the most wonderful song ever written. I never knew that this list had come out with Maybe I'm Amazed deservedly well deserving number one. Oh happy days at last. Has Jann Wenner left RS as I can't believe he would endorse this list as he was always horrible towards Paul?

I will not criticize Rob's list. But I agree with very little of it. But that's fine. Let him Eat At Home. 30 Lennon songs out of 100? No way for me.

"My Valentine" is a great classic Paul McCartney love song. Why would you hate on that song so much..? I almost had to turn the video off when you scoffed at this selection.

The studio Maybe I'm Amazed is unfinished, it just fades out, whereas superior live version has the proper ending. Plus Paul sings the live version far better and Jimmy's guitars are superior to Paul's original imho

An extremely overrated song. 'Letting Go' and 'Love in Song' are far better songs.

Once I saw With A Little Luck at 99, I knew the list was complete horse dung. And, it only got worse from there. Foolish ranking.
