Building a horrible arrow in order to see what makes a horrible arrow horrible. Putting 100-125-150-175 and 200 grain points on the front of an underspined arrow to see why you might be having issues getting good groups. Also using bow poundage to correct spine issues with arrows.

I learned something new last year when tuning my arrows. I had never done this to this level of scrutiny. Bare shaft tuning at roughly 25 feet I could turn my nock 15 degrees and get a different tear in the paper. Hit the sweet spot after rotating damn near the entire rotation of the shaft around the nock. I did this for all my arrows. Kinetic Platinum Pierce 250's 180 grain insert from ethics archery and a 125 grain field tip. You mentioned turning your shaft to move the fletchings out of the way of something solid on your bow. I used to do this. With fletchings on the shaft I presume that slight shift in rotational degree from nock to shaft won't be as big of a deal as with a simple bare shaft, but it's something to consider when tuning and fletching arrows to retain the same level of consistency from arrow to arrow. Now I mark the perfect bullet from the bare shaft tune with a sharpie, then line that shit up when I go to fletching. I suppose if you do turn the shaft for clearance you'd have to do the same for the rest of the arrows. Would probably only have to tune one in perfect again and they would all be the same, but that's something to check before trying to kill a living animal. My mind was blown bare shaft tuning. I couldn't believe something so minor as rotating the shaft 15 degrees could force everything to go to shit. Maybe you'll be including that in this series. I always watch your videos and don't always comment. I think this series you're doing is going to help everyone at all levels. I dream all archers go through their equipment like this before launching a broadhead at an animal, unfortunately we know that is not the case. The ignorant ones will always remain as such. Can't learn anything knew when your glass is already full and everyone around you is a dumbass.

The experimentation w/ arrow weight, tuning etc has become my hobby the past few years..wife says addiction but whatever, we all have our vices.. Everything in this video is dead on, but from personal experience it cannot be overstated that the person shooting the bow needs to be the one constant in this equation. Many (not all) are shooting super heavy poundage, poor form, tourque, fatigue etc which no matter how we switch up rest tune, arrow spine, foc etc it can be near impossible to achieve this harmony of a arrow passing effortlessly through paper.. My 2 cents.. take your time, have your shot routine down to muscle memory, dont try and do this in a hour.. start to get tired..stop and come back another time, or you will go crazy trying to dial in a arrow setup when in fact it may be the shooter. Patience is a virtue and in archery this cannot be overstated..

That's a neat experiment to do. The poundage experiment tears were not even close to being as drastic as the grain weight experiment, but still noticeable enough. I actually have the RF test kit like you do. I also bought the Easton fletching jig to build my own arrows. I am not sure which shafts that I will go with or if I want to go with longer vanes than the blazers that have been on my past two different arrows. I plan on going with fixed blades like I did last year. My old PSE from 06 is set up with a 29 inch draw at 60 lbs of draw weight. I drastically changed my arrow weight going from a 9.3 gpi with a standard insert to an 11.25 gpi with 45 grain outsert from Carbon Xpress. Those XT Hunters are recommended as a high value arrow. I like Troy, he definitely cracks me up with how eccentric he is and how he doesn't care what people say. However he does care to help people kill more animals cleanly and effectively. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

@@brandonmcdonald6121 that is definitely the science. Oh I forgot to mention most arrow boxes suggest that with my 29 in draw and 60 lb draw that I should be using 400 spine arrows, but my last two sets have been 340. I will definitely check if my peep sight lineup. I missed 3 does 20-35 for a certain reason. I upgraded my release to a Tru Ball single hook release that cost me $90. Back to arrows, I will try the kit on my current arrows and experiment with a couple arrow builds as well in the spring. Maybe chase turkey with them in the spring.

The more weight as you said the more the arrow will bend. So from a 100 weight down in weight. The better your bow will paper tune. Bows can shoot higher weights. But better results will always be had by the lightning the arrow. Even with vain. Feathers are a plus.

Safe. Bow weights are 5 grains per pound of bow weight. If you go lower grains per pound, it is possible to get great arrow flight. But the arrow could break,, or an accident may occcur The more weight one goes up using those same arrows a more problems show up in your tune. All because of arrow point weights added. If a archer try what you say they will run. In to the same problems. So why waste your time?

I JUST went through RF's arrow building process after a frustrating time with my VXR + 300 spine arrows last season. I picked up some 340s, and if the results are anything to go by, I think I was over-spined and it very clearly made a difference. It was VERY unforgiving with fixed-blades, to the point where I had to switch back to my Sevr 2.0 mechanical heads just before the deer season. On the flip side of spine, it appears that if one's bow is well tuned, one should be able to nock tune any shaft that isn't massively under-spined to shoot bullet holes. I did this, and my VXR 31.5 is shooting better than ever. Did you find that the VXR 31.5 likes slightly weaker shafts than other bows? I'm shooting about 14% FOC for reference, so not too high.

1. We just had our 1st night in February not below Zero. The whole month we had lows from 14*-31* below. 15* above weather today felt like I could shed the jacket. 2. Can I use that made up word cheap-out? 3. I just bought six 300 spine shafts. They r cut to the right length. Tomorrow I will check the ends with my Lumenok F.A.S.T. tool. After beveling the nock end I will glue my 55 grain Valkyrie insert/outserts on. Saturday I will bare shaft nock tune. After I fletch them when all 6 r tits up then & only then will I pray for 30* temps on Sunday to finish the process. I have always shot the Victory VAP TKO'S but these r the Victory .166 models which don't have the extra wrap on them. That makes them 30 grains lighter with the same 300 spine which doesn't mess up my 20%+ FOC cuz I'm using a 20 grain heavier lighted nock with these. Hoping that my Nexus 4 shows up by the time the leaves r popping. 4. I had a video pop up on my 📱of a 24 year old female who's surprised that she continues to be enamored with her 42 year old fella. One of her followers is 27 & her guy pal is 45. 2 reasons given were confidence & adventure. We should all have confidence in r fall adventures & now is the time to prepare.

Nice method of showing long + heavy weight on the arrow end decreases spine. I have to wonder if you slap a 100-grain fixed head on that arrow if it will fly as good as the paper shows?

Just a friendly double-check. You may have already considered this, but, could it be possible that you are seeing a false result due to the arrow contacting your riser. These tears all look too stiff rather than too weak to me. Thoughts?
@brandonmcdonald6121
@brandonmcdonald6121 3 жыл бұрын
The “bullet hole” wasn’t an actual bullet hole so you can see the tear being exaggerated as I add point weight. It was just a slight rest adjustment that needed to happen.

Hey Brandon. I was like you with the hurry up tune at the shop. I shot my arrow through paper with a bunch of people around. The tear looked terrible to me, but the tech pushed the back of the paper up and once the paper was flat again he said "perfect bullet hole". I agree it looked good after pushing back in, but is it common to get a really weird "left tear" where it's just the paper that tore strange? Hope that makes sense. Thanks

Dude, you actually blushed when you said nudes! I have been playing with arrow weights and bow poundage over the last few weeks. @@brandonmcdonald6121 Generally yes. I am finding a good balance between a solid FOC (14%-16% ish) but not to crazy, a moderately weighted arrow (around 500 grains), 300 spine, and good speed ... say 280-285 FPS. Going to play more with more FOC and stiffer arrows in the upcoming weeks. Interested in ability to tune the heavier setup with Bowtech Deadlock and Elite S.E.T. So much fun.

For a minute there I thought you were giving away bow equipment for nudes..... that was about to be a "hold my beer" moment. Haha great videos great info! Everyone should really focus on tuning its amazing what a bare shaft does at 30 yards with slight facial pressure or hand torque, let alone an out of tune bow. I like to shoot bare shaft groups for practice to confirm my bow is still in tune and confirm my form is staying good during practice. Can't practice failure.

I can move my peep?!? Now I feel really stupid. I am coming up on my one year anniversary of having my first bow. In that time I’ve increased my poundage, changed my rest, changed from a wrist to a thumb button... and my anchor point has changed so much that I can’t see my pin AND the target at the same time through my bifocals because my neck is so contorted. I know I need to get my bow shop to recheck my draw length and peep height, but it’s a COVID hell there. So I can just push my peep and not launch it into the yard? The things nobody teaches you. Oh, until you.

I think that depends on bareshaft vs fletched. With bareshaft, I start close and then work back to 10ish yards. With fletched, I think the farther back you go the more time the fletchings have to correct the bad flight so I stay 5 and in.
