Jaqui was 22 when she signed up to a 10-day Goenka retreat. It was the last known thing she did before she died. This is Jaqui’s story.

I had tears in my eyes when the mum was talking about that jacui is everywhere now and they always have her with them when they travel. Heavy stuff but thanks for the series!

I knew Jaqui personally and saw her the day before she left Ontario to drive out to B.C. she tattooed me and we had a conversation about mental health, from both of our perspectives. I am not going into detail here, but, Jaqui told me something that day which she indicated that she had NEVER admitted to anyone else prior to then. this was on March 8, 2021. after listening to this entire series and knowing more details about these circumstances - details I was not aware of before this - I am now left wondering if her admission to me, was a factor in what ended up happening. there are some eerie similarities between Jaqui and Megan's stories in particular and, to make a long story short, I am beginning to see the trappings of cult-recruitment underneath the facade of these retreats. I think there is more to this organization than anyone realizes. I had only known Jaqui for about 3 months prior to the above-mentioned date. despite what she confided in me, we actually did not know each other overly well. we had mainly bonded over tattooing, as I am a heavily tattooed person and was interested in her designs, which I had discovered when she rented my facility for an evening to conduct a fundraising event. she was a versatile young woman with extreme amounts of both aptitude and ambition, which is why her admission to me on March 8 came as the shock that it did. I bring this up to point out that, while I did have a personal connection with her, it was not particularly intense or long-lasting. despite my obvious sadness about this whole situation, it did not cause me anywhere near the same levels of grief that it caused her family. since grief was much less of a factor in my case, it's easier for me than it might be for others to separate logic from emotion here. bottom line: logic is telling me that there is a lot more to this story, yet to be uncovered.

@@SunSurferDurfer what? no! nothing that dramatic. what she told me is already hinted at in the podcast - pay attention to the section discussing what she wrote on her application/intake forms - read between the lines there and keep in mind that I know for a fact that she was lying about some of it. I feel like her deception at that point, was later used against her when the truth came out during her first week at the retreat, causing a sense of intense guilt and shame that directly lead to/resulted in her final act.

The retreat implied that she was struggling with something she had done in the past but I would be more inclined to think she was struggling with something done to her in the past which had been brought to the surface over the course of her time at the retreat. Not something neccessarily forgotten but something she hadnt had to directly & immediately deal with previously.

The thing is during intense meditations you can access realities and beings that can be very scary, or similar to alien abduction scenarios. Sounds strange but the astral planes can be quite bizzare to say the least.

Problems in meditation only happen when people do not understand what they are doing by practising meditation. This can be learned from knowledgable teachers (note that Goenka retreats do not have much guidance at a deep level - they just play videos and focus on the practice). But Buddhist teachings beautifully and methodically describe how our minds work etc., and if one spends time and effort to learn this, there cannot be any issues when practising meditation. I suggest checking out books/videos of individuals like Ajahn Brahmali, Ajahn Sona, Ajahn Sumedho, sister Ayya Khema, Ajahn Brahm, Anushka Fernandopulle, etc. (note: the word ‘Ajahn’ means teacher).

Almost no one can "learn" mediation from a book or (God forbid) a video. Meditation is a journey where (almost) everybody needs personal guidance during an extensive period.
