Being gay in Bulgaria is still a controversial subject, especially among households. Konstantin works for Single Step, a non-profit LGBT organization, in hopes that the Bulgarian society be more accepting, one step at a time.

These people do such important work - thank you for your fight! I have personally seen what kind of trauma growing up gay in Bulgaria can cause and I wish that no one would have to go through this. My partner and I are learning step by step to cope with that stress, even now that he’s not in Bulgaria.

I’m Bulgarian. I take every opportunity to remind the world and my fellow compatriots that Bulgaria is an unforgiventy flawed country. Don’t go there, don’t stay there. Anyone different or weaker, including animals, gets systematically smashed. And even those not invilved tolerate the hate and abuse. It is really easy to stand up in Bulgaria and give a speach against LGBTQ people, gypsies, suggest beating up a stray dog to death, drop that you parttake in human traffiking, etc. And most times there would not be a reaction, just tolerance. I have no excuses left for this miseable collective of people which chooses day after day to avoid responsability over their own lives and community. I’m changing my nationality as soon as I can and, if it wasn’t for my loved ones, would not even look back. It might just as well sink into the ground, I don’t care anymore.

@@xiiv.emilia No they are not. I am a Bulgarian and well I am technically a christian because I was baptized when I was 1 as was my younger sister and most people I know because it is tradition, but Bulgarians do not practice christianity, sure some have a jesus icon in the car or something like that but we don't go to church, some do only during Christmas and Easter, but the vast majority don't we are mostly atheists, but we do not try to convert people to atheism or speak bad of christianity or any religion for that. The reason though it is tradition is because during the Ottoman empire slavery our ancestors were being killed for not accepting islam as a religion so it is mostly out of respect for their sacrifice. The people that mostly are religious are the elderly people that live in villages.

All the things he said about the LGBT community are true. Personally as a Bulgarian gay guy, i think that gay people are really misrepresented and I think the government has to do something about it. Being gay isnt easy in here, indeed... However, i hope that many years the other young generation will change its opinion about gay people...

It's in The Netherlands also not easy. But on work I worked for the government in the Netherlands. Years ago it was very difficult to come out as gay.The last years it changed 2 x I had to face a not so nice comment on being gay. I went straid away to me boss. The college had to come. Had to write letter for appolisment and if she did it one more time it would become in here personal file. After this insident no college ever said anything. 30 years ago you could do nothing.

LGBT acceptance in Bulgaria is low. Not because of religion. It is due to poorly educated population. The same as most of Eastern Europe, Africa and the middle East. Bulgarian society is not as well educated as Western Europe. When and if education improves, LGBT acceptance will improve as well.

I believe your country is like NY and NJ in the outer parts or the city and the suburbs in the 80s and early 90s. I think places like these are traditional more conservative and take time to change. Otherwise people are so nice welcoming and wonderful. I think before as in late 60s and early70s was when people started to talk about it. Many or most did not know what to think about it. 50s and early 60s and before people were quiet, put it under the rug and if families accepted, they worried about what everyone thought because it was not talked about at all. Anything to do with sexuality really. Sex wasn't talked about either before the early 60s. It was for married people only!! I knew I was different as early as 11 years old. I came from a Catholic family went to catholic school for 12 years in Brooklyn and I went in summers to our lake house in NW NJ for summers. People started to like the opposite sex little by little 12 to 16 with crushes etc. When they talked about someone being gay or so called faggot usually meant less than a man. Like they were weak or they were sissy girls. I did not feel that way but kept it quiet. I was 19 when I told my family. My dad was accepting because he had a close friend growing up that was gay and lived with his partner in a home upstate NJ where we went to visit them when I was 5 in the 70s. My mom is still uncomfortable then and now because she was hoping I would meet a nice woman have children since I was great with kids. I was the youngest of 5. 90s I came out more to friends and family and they did not mind. Conservative as they were religious or not they were fine. I noticed that in my 20s that nobody cared. They had stereotypes that gays had orgies and were not faithful and in your face. They told me to be careful. Thats what was told about gays then and usually before then too. Since then everyone knows and they do not care and I lived in Florida, England and Italy. Italy they were accepting too. I suppose more bisexuals in Italy because they are still in the phase where we were in the 80s and 90s. I remember in NY and England in the 90s adverts of gay men looking for nice lesbian woman for marriage to have children. That happened and I suppose it still does today. To look acceptable to their families. In the closet as I would say. Everyone knows from jobs I had and I do not care but I am conservative in so many ways too. I usually told them especially when they noticed if I was not married with kids or having a girlfriend. Everyone has been wonderful and kind. Only a few told me they do not agree with my lifestyle but they respect me as a person. I was okay with that. They were still nice. They might think of the old stereotypes. I never felt like I was a victim. I still live in suburbia and feel comfortable. I know so many people do not like gays open displays of affection or to have very little of it especially with children around. I do not feel I have to be in your face with me being gay with a partner. Kissing and holding him in front of everyone. I would add here to Europe or anywhere especially people over 21 who are straight rarely show displays of affection. Sometimes hand holding but they are teens but I rarely see teenagers or college kids. Mid 20s or later I rarely see it with straight couples. I know I spoke to some teens and early 20s and it is the same. If one of their friends who are start kissing in front of them with their g/f b/f they say get a room jokingly. It was like that when I was young too. Young couples going out with each other would always laugh. So in public I do not feel comfortable gays or straight making out in front of everyone. My friends and my siblings I have 4 older ones. Married some for 10 or 20 years to 30. They always told me they rarely hold their husbands or wives hands because they are not teens or in college or dating. I never felt discriminated against. I do feel discriminated in the gay community. Tough being gay when so many gays are tough with body fitnesses looks. Saying men are fat when they are fit. So if you are slightly overweight they would make fun of you or not talk to you that you are not welcome. I am romantic and too many are not too much. I think they are tougher than women. Some stereotypes are true. Gay scenes are too much and you all must thing the same way or you are not welcome. Conservatives always accepted me even for different beliefs. This is my opinion and how I see it. With straight people, I am respectful and they are always respectful back to me. Some gays in the USA do not realize how most people are welcoming and they are too forward for most people. These people are not liked because they are gay but many times they are just rude to others.

The situation will improve very rapidly as the older homophobic generation die out and the children learn, via the LGBT teachings in schools, that same-sex pairings are natural in all species and races and have sociobiological benefits. Not every man wanting a woman and not every girl wanting a boy is normal, naturally. The EU gives over 2 billion euros to Bulgaria every year and thus every year the Bulgarian youth become better educated and tolerant. 🧡🌍🌈

Lgbt should show that they are the same and humanise themselves. Most people I know that know gay people are perfectly fine with them if they don’t try to seek special status. Just act normal, have same sex partners or whatever and be human. Prides and activists makes it look like lgbt want special treatment which makes many people angry. That is how gay intolerance becomes worse. You give them an argument (eg gays try to show themselves everywhere with no one easing etc) that’s how the majority thinks no matter wrong or right you won’t change human feelings. Just try to come up with a good solution which isn’t copy paste from America.

well here i am because in the comments it seems no one else will say it... Things are just fine. Balkan people in general have their own way of thinking, one that would be very weird at first, maybe even seems rude and definitely hard to understand. It is completely different culture and that is a great thing, it is nice having people with different views, ideologies, ways of thinking. After all, call me xenophobic, but diversity of thought is more important than any other one. That being said, i will unfortunate probably not be able to talk about all of the things i can and want just because i am really of tired while writing this and because things are a lot deeper than just lgbt things having a lot to do with the church (despite bulgarians were never very religious people at all), communism and our history in general. After all around what? maybe the last 600 years or even more our country have always been under some other influence. So, culture... Thing are a lot different between the west and the east. Bulgaria is south east europe. It is not too much in neither the west or east and most would still understand a lot better very east asian culture better than the west one. Words have different meaning in the west and east or maybe it would be slightely more correct to say they refer to things in different extent. It also dictates that some things like showing intimacy at public places is just rude and disrespectful. So, well, making out in public is pretty much not normal for anyone be it homosexual or not. The pride is hated even by gays as it is simply seen as something that represents the west the extreme ideology it is associated with. Unfortunately gays will often also be instinctively associated with it as well. It is seen as an attack towards our culture. And believe me the east in general have a lot of reasons to fear the little left by their culture being brutally erased considering what we see happening in fraithening global scale through the last years. I have never been through a single actually homophobic experience. But who knows... i may just have better problems to care for so i never felt the need to "правя мухата слон"
