Episode 32 of The Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast is titled, Why We Hate Keto. We cover a lot of material in this episode, including Pharmacy Benefit Managers, over-the-counter supplements for weight loss, Keto and the Lion diet, Glp-1’s, and avocado oil, just to name a few.
In our In the News segment, we dive into an article from The New York Times titled, The Opaque Industry Secretly Inflating Prices for Prescription Drugs. As the title suggests, there are behind-the-scene shenanigans going on that needlessly and greedily add to the cost of prescription drugs. It’s an intricate, and unfortunately, legal method of stealing money to the tune of billions of dollars a year. But there is something you can do to stop it. Tune in to find out what that is!
In our Patient Story, we talk to Laura who came to us from Phoenix. Laura gained weight later in life and struggled with the idea of surgery. It wasn’t until she retired and her plans to travel became more difficult, (due to the extra weight) that she really considered having bariatric surgery. After meeting with me she went ahead with a gastric bypass and lost 80 pounds in 10 months!
In our Nutrition segment we explain why we hate Keto. You might think that Keto is a relatively new diet but it’s actually over 150 years old and intended to help treat patients with epilepsy. And, while Keto may actually help you lose weight, it wreaks havoc on your cardiovascular system causing poorer health.
In our Economics of Obesity segment, we talk about over-the-counter weight loss supplements. We cover Chromium Picolinate, Berberine, Metformin, Inulin, Alli, and Hydroxycut. Do they actually work? We lay it all out for you!
Finally, we answer 3 of our listeners questions including, when to start GLP-1’s after a sleeve, our thoughts on avocado oil, and what we think about the Lion diet. Tune in for a deep-dive into the science behind many famous and infamous weight loss practices.

I watched to the end and listened to the different diets and you are correct, they are not long term sustainable… I tried many. My GP, before I was referred to bariatric surgery, said do three things: 1 - do not eat anything that ends with an O (Oreo, nabisco, taco, nacho…you get it). I call this the No-O diet 2 - do not drink your calories 3 - Just begin walking and strive to do a little more each day I did that, went back 3 months later and was down from my start of 372 to 358… he gave me my referral. I went from drinking almost 3 gal of milk a week and supporting a cookie company to drinking about 90 oz of water a day. I really like these videos and also related to the strength training, I use a coach and have seen such difference in my core, legs and shoulders. Thank you and I please keep this going

I did keto for 5 months and lost 63 pounds. I would have gladly continued eating whole, healthy foods and avoiding all processed grains and sugars (a.k.a. KETO) for the rest of my life, but my pre-existing gall bladder condition demanded to be dealt with and after having it removed I could not digest fats the way I had before and had to give it up. But if doctors object to people eating healthy foods and avoiding sugar, then I really have to wonder about the state of education in doctors these days!

Please suggest a good oil to cook/stir fry with that will not turn into a trans-fat? You speak here about avocado oil which is quite expensive. What about coconut oil/?Cannola oil/Sunflower oil? Some cheaper options please?

Sure. I’ll put it on our list to be answered, in-depth, on an upcoming episode of The Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast.

The 2 ppl I knew who did keto died of heart conditions after. Idk of there's a correlation but it is something that should be studied

Maybe they had underlying conditions already and it wasn't due to the keto. I know people who've done keto for a long time and never had any problems

Of course I can give myself as example and many people I know that did keto did wonders for for the health. Got off all medication, lost weight, cured sleep apnea, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

I have been keto for on and off for 10 years. Exclusivelly keto/carnivore since my gastric bypass in 2017. Absolutely zero problems. In fact before gastric bypass at 500lbs i was taking the insulin in the amount youd give to a child. I accomplished that because of keto.

Yup. I have always respected Dr. Weiner, but I can't respect any doctor who objects to people eating whole, healthy foods and avoiding processed crap and sugar. Keto is how every human being is born and how every human should be eating.

If you watch their "I hate Keto" video, the "on/off" is why they don't support Keto. It is not maintainable.
