In Episode 4, I talk about a singer's worst nightmare: singing in your throat. This is when everything in your body from the shoulders up are tight. Your shoulders are tense, your throat is tense, and your voice gets pinned in your throat causing a constricted sound. In this video, I will sing it wrong and then sing it right. Even though it takes practice, the key is relaxing everything from the shoulders up. The only part of you that should contract is where you are supporting your tone, but that's lower towards your belly. I will talk about proper tonal support in another video. For now, just think about relaxing.

Best way to learn to not sing through your throaght is diaphragmatic exercises. This is so very important. If you have weak diaphragmatic support your throat will try to compensate for the lack of support in your voice and we don't want that. The stronger your diaphragmatic support the less compensating your throat needs to do resulting in free singing!

I like your style and your approach, thank you for this. Did you specialize in doing jazz, musicals, opera?

Thank you so much. I started in musical theater so that’s kind of my style of teaching - building a strong voice. I was also a dancer so I believe in building a strong body first. Now I’m a jazz singer.

@@TJazzka Oh that's great to hear! I do love the theater and I'm glad to see there are others with the same kind of enthusiasm. I also enjoy dancing the classics like swing, waltz, tap and some ballet. I think it would be such fun to be in a musical. I imagine it can be difficult to sing and dance at the same time. How do you achieve that kind of ability to do both simultaneously, and to make sure your dancing doesn't make your voice sound shaky or weak? Would be glad to hear what you do.

@Sweetie, the way to dance and sing at the same time without sacrificing your voice or your dancing is to: (1) PRACTICE; and (2) Do everything you can to strengthen your body. A strong body makes for a strong voice, as long as your vocal technique is in good shape.

hi, a quick question, if i may.. I had a node on my vocal chord when i was a child and have had a strained voice somewhat. although strangely enough i find it easier to sing than speak. not that anyone has ever heard me sing. You said "once you've had a node, that's it". does this mean ill shouldn't or cant sing? i want to sing, and i will anyway. its disheartening to hear that's it. so i probably shouldn't be asking such a question. Thanks for your video ! very interesting

Oh dear, I did not see this comment and I see you wrote 5 months ago. I’m very sorry to be replying so late. No, no, no DO NOT STOP singing. You said you had a node on your vocal cord as a child. I was talking about Adults who overuse their voices for prolonged periods, not Children with nodes. I am sorry you thought, even for a minute, that you shouldn’t be singing. You should be singing! I am not a doctor. Your doctor is the best one for that question but my guess is that you enjoy singing and, as long as you make sure not to sing (or talk) in your throat, you have a long vocal life ahead of you. You might even sing in front of people someday. 😉 Here is my email if you want to talk any further about it. I feel badly that I was not clear. Please sing. “gotjazzz@yahoo.com.”

If I understand you correctly, you are saying that you have been singing in the back of your throat to achieve a deep sound? Is that what you mean? If so, try to think of sending your sound out your forehead and away from your throat. Breathe deep down in your diaphragm and send the sound “through” your throat and “out” your forehead. Thanks for your comment. 🎶🙏

You mention that the more you sing the better, what about vocal fatigue? How does that come about?
@TJazzka
@TJazzka 18 күн бұрын
Sorry for my late reply. I’m just seeing this comment now. As for vocal fatigue- REST! Stop singing if you can. And not only rest your voice but rest your body as well. When I am practicing, I sing for a while and I then stop. Maybe I’ll drink some tea or do something else for a bit, and then I’ll resume practicing. But please never push yourself too hard because it will not serve you. You only have two vocal cords and one body. Be kind to them. Your strength will always return. If it does not, then maybe someone else is going on. It’s like any exercise. You work it and then you rest it. Remember, always put your health first. ❤️‍🩹 I hope this helped.
